Personally I find that drawing from life is so much more efficient that drawing from memory that it's a waste of time and even worse it helps to develop bad habits. It can be somewhat enjoyable sometimes however.

I think you need to do both to learn properly. Drawing from life is easier and stuff, but you won't learn the skills to draw what you wand/need to draw unless you have a convenient reference image at hand.

But if you only do imagination, you start to slowly drift away from the fundamental knowledge.
