I've been working on teaching myself to draw traditional style, and constant smears and smudges are really kicking my ass.
It seems like whenever I draw using a pencil (charcoal's even worse, I gave up using charcoal a while back) the paper slowly gets covered in nasty-looking smears. This is made worse when my hands start to sweat.
How can I prevent smudges/smears, and have my pencilwork look cleaner?

Have a blank sheet of paper under your palm when you draw.

this might not help you now, but when you're done with pencil sketches, to avoid smudging, spray some hair spray on it.

Right idea, but use spray fixative instead.
No.1595
You can either have a paper under your hand like other anons have said, or
You can draw without touching your hand on your paper. This gives you less precision, which can lead to very interesting drawings.
Or you can use the smudges to your advantage. It shows more of the human precence. It can make drawings more personal, and the flaws can improve a drawing if you use them correctly.

If you are lefthanded, draw from the right to the left, and if you are righthanded, viceversa. And always remember to have a blank sheet of paper under your hand when you draw. Also, if your pencils are too soft (2B or more), maybe you could use some fixative spray after you are done.
No.1677
Buy a smudgeguard, stick some paper under your hand or cut up an old glove. It's usually sweat that smudges it.
