All right /art/, I want to get really good at painting.

I am already somewhat decent at drawing and did do 3 oil paints before with the help of a teacher (not that great though).

The problem is that I do not know what to do to improve now since I am unable to attend any more art classes and I cannot figure this out on my own for the life of me.

Any good suggestions?
Pic related, although I wouldn't limit myself to portraits.

Start with acrylics before doing oil painting so that you can get familiar with your own styles and techniques without having to wait a day for shit to dry. Just look at art you like and try and think about how the artist does things. Art books also help.

Any art books that you could recommend?

I don't know much about traditional painting, but this guy seems interesting:

Maybe you can learn something from him.

Do some studies from paintings you like. Paint still life's and try to find things in them that interests you. The most important first step is to get control over the colors. You need to see color variations in the motifs you look at, and you need to know how to replicate them with paint. This comes with practice. Starting out with just red, blue, yellow, green, black and white is a good idea. Stay away from black as much as you csn though, since it can make the colors muddy and desaturated. Try both acrylics and oil paints, starter kits of either one aren't expensive. Start with cheap paint and canvas, so you don't feel like you're wasting money by painting. Practice, practice, practice, and you'll gain knowledge, skill, motivation and confidence steadily.
