I need some advice, how do I mix eastern (anime etc) with western (cartoons, comic books) in my drawing? Im still trying to find a way to make characters who dont look too anime but dont look too western either. I want it right in between. I guess the closest would be like Final Fantasy VII or something, but more charming in a kid sort of way. I tried with this photo but it didnt turn out exactly the way I want, so any advice or tips would help, no how to's, I want to come up with my own style.

Work on your fundamentals before worrying too much about stylization. Like perspective, form, anatomy, etc. I say this because the sample you give of your art is clearly lacking in fundamentals. This is an excellent video which explains what the fundamentals of art are exactly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piKV5nXL-C4

From there, it's all a matter of critically analyzing various artworks and styles and experimenting with your own art. Improve your observational skills through life drawing and still lives. Do studies of your favorite artists. Copy and play around with different styles, and you'll naturally grow your own.

Realize that "Western" and "Eastern" are arbitrary distinctions for art styles. Early Japanese cartoons were heavily influenced by contemporary Western cartoons (Osamu Tezuka was a big fan of Bambi, for example.) And now today Western cartoons have been increasingly influenced by Japanese cartoons.

Keep at it and good luck with your studies.

I guess just pointing out the things that stick out to me the most:

*The colors are unappealing. Bright yellow is usually a bad choice for a background, since it pops out and takes attention away from the subject. And with the head it looks like you added a yellow filter.

*It's lacking structure and form, and looks flat. Especially with the top hat.

*The expression and composure of the character is weird; he's just staring blankly with fish eyes, frowning.

* Composition is also bad. The character's body is on the right side of the drawing, in a way that is neither symmetrical nor follows the Rule of Thirds. Worse, his shoulder is tangent with the pictorial plane (the edge of the picture.)

And yeah, besides that it's just lacking in all the fundamentals like I said. But you're a beginner, so like I said, just keep at it. I hope that helps!

why thanks again. With the colors, I was tired and working on it at night, so it was just pure laziness. Btw those arent his eyes, those were supposed to be goggles, lol :). But how would I fix his structure and form?

You need to learn and understand how to visualize and draw form--how things are three dimensionally. Observe things and how they are, instead of just doing "symbol drawing." The picture attached I think explains this pretty well.

Like I said, to understand structure and improve your observation skills, do a bunch of life drawing and still lives. Stay away from photo studies for now. Photos are flat images and distort perspective, and won't teach you form like a live model will.

so practice by drawing real life stuff? I draw stuff like lamps and chairs for real life everyonce in a while in 3d, guess I should do it more
