I hope I am allowed to post my figure studies, 1 minute studies and I am just trying to emphasize on the gesture to begin with, reading Hamptons book and watching Prokos videos.

>>231For a more consistent shading you could practice by drawing a square and then try to fill it in with an even value, your drawing look kinda spotty with the uneven shading! Other than that portrait beat the hell of my ability to draw portraits!

Not really the pinnacle of accuracy but I enjoyed it.

Trying a more direct approach without any underdrawing or construction
No.243
>>242looks really good. The only issue without construction lines is being in complete control, but its a trade off for spontaneity.
No.244
>>243Yeah it's tough to keep everything together, but I realize that many of the best draftsman have abandoned construction lines and just draw directly, so I ill be trying that approach for a while.
No.246
>>244It's never a bad idea to experiment. One technique that may help you in the future if you do use a little construction: Hold the pencil or stylus at about halfway, then quickly "scribble" down a light gesture. This keeps things from getting to stiff and allows for that spontaneous effect you get without using construction. It's a mix of control and freedom, but just something to try if you want.
No.247
quickly and lightly I meant to say, then you just move up your grip for details and such.

>>253I'm guessing that facial gestures aren't helping me too well. I'm mostly weak at faces too. Do you have some tips or guidelines to follow? I'm redoing Bargue plates at the moment, but I wonder if I'm overthinking it.
>>254I'll try to adapt to it faithfully then.
No.256
>>251>>255Hey man, not bad overall. I think just the proportions are a little off (you compressed it vertically a bit) and the hatching for the shadows is a bit ugly and messy. Here's a quick paintover fixing this. Basically you can think of the entire head as an egg. This will get you thinking of the main mass instead of the features, and then you can get the main proportions better. Once you have that you can put in the features properly and the likeness and accuracy will be there. If you want to add shading, I suggest avoiding lines in a messy hatch like you have and instead using a more tonal approach with broad flat values. I just placed in the shadow shapes with a light grey then used the smudge tool to soften the edges appropriately. It's a quick solution with a more clear and nicer result than hatching imo. Hopefully that helps!
No.257
How do I make myself enjoy studies again? I used to be one of those guys who do nothing but copying photos, got decent at it and realized that it didn't help me learn to draw from imagination at all, so I started doing that and now I realize that I need to do studies for my visual library but I just can't bring myself to it. I even know what exactly I need to study but it seems so boring when there is no clear goal that I can reach to feel some accomplishment.
No.259
>>256Thanks! I should probably ditch hatching since most animators don't bother doing it. I think they just place shapes that show the highlights and shadows, like what you've done in the pic.

Left is what I had when I started last night, right is what I ended up with after a good night's sleep.
I was a bit afraid to pick up the stylus after months of inactivity. I'm chuffed it came out as well as it did.
No.470
idk its ok but there's tons of mistakes :/
No.475
>>360>>394Not perfect but well done, keep at it.
It reminds me of what I used to draw when I started taking drawing seriously, and I hated everything I drew. Every day I would draw for hours and then spend hours thinking about whether I should give up or not.
Later on I realised that I had probably spent a month without thinking about whether I should give up or not, and it felt like a great achievement to me.
So keep drawing.

>>540Drawing lines over it are not a bad idea if you have trouble seeing form, although you drew it all incorrectly so....
No.542
>>540Kinda. Id start with an abstract shape of the entire head, and focus on getting that shape correct. Then, I'd move in from the outside. But the concept you have to see forms i okay, but I would internalize the typography lines instead of actually drawing them. I'm this one by the way
>>539 No.543
