I find it odd that an activity as punk and cyber as dumpster diving doesn't have its own thread yet.

Let's hear some of the finds, some of the better places, some stories, etc.

This is an excellent thread.

I was once on an island of bums dubbed Rainbow Island that fed themselves almost entirely from the dumpster of the local supermarket. We feasted like kings around our outdoor kitchen protected from the Florida rains by a tarp. It was pretty schway.

Once in California I found a 6 pack of dank beer in a trash can completely unopened. It was warm, but I really did not care.

I have very little experience diving for tech, but if it's anything at all like diving for food and beer, it should be a very profitable venture.

Also, I recently heard about this:

https://archive.is/ScASt

I wouldn't count on making as much as this guy at it, but who knows.

Very interested if any of you chummers have some stories.

 No.25751

>>25750

Rainbow Island sounds like a cool place.

>>25748

I have only gone diving once but I found some speakers that I still use and are pretty great.

 No.25755

Been dumpster diving construction waste containers because I need a PVC T-piece and some tubes for the drain in my dad's garage, so I can put a second washer drain hose in the main drain pipe instead of in the sink, as the washer who pumps has a VERY powerful (Hanning 80 watt) pump and there's a risk of overflow.

>I find it odd that an activity as punk and cyber as dumpster diving doesn't have its own thread yet.

I could've sworn there have been like two other threads with this exact sentence in it

It's probably just the voices in your head again.

 No.25761

>>25756

Someone might've said that but I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a thread.

 No.25767

>>25748

There's a guide on jinteki.industries, IIRC, but I don't think it mentions how to get to the dumpster without raising suspicions.

Do you just drive around the back?

 No.25770

>>25767

Park far enough away so that if people see your car, they won't think "hey that car's right next to that dumpster" but close enough so that you can carry any loot that you find back to it.

 No.25771

>>25757

that was a good album.

 No.26077

I scavenge the university´s dumpster for computer parts. So far i´ve only scored a few busted power supplies that could be fixed but they´re pretty low. Thinking of cutting them apart and making some abstract art shit with them.

anyone know of a good site or app that has marked dumpsters? I tried dumpstermap but it had little to no info.

schway, i was just about to lurk for it.

Is dumpster diving a thing in Australia?

 No.34684

>>34673

I would imagine so, unless the crust/homeless scene has died out there. I don't know the first thing about the laws there, but if it's not a thing… make it one.

 No.34693

>>25748

I've only ever dumpstered for food & all we got was some oranges and chocolate pudding but worth it to learn the way & practices.

 No.34705

would you recommend places like jb hifi?

 No.34781

i'm not familiar with the store personally, but just looking at the landing page I'd say yes

 No.34955

going out tonight, any 651 wanna meet up?

 No.34972

One time when walking back from high school, I saw something strange sticking out of the garbage of a nearby house. It was an OLYMPIC FUCKING JAVELIN. Flabberghasted, I took it home and put it in the garage. My parents tossed it out some odd years ago presumably because it was a 4 foot tall eyesore to them, but to me it was a glorious testament to the crazy shit white people toss out.

turns out today is when most places by me get there trash taken.

 No.34978

Is that a hard drive?

 No.34996

>>34978

yes, I have yet test it out, but someone wrote "read post failed" on it. I'm 0% sure I can can fix that.

 No.35001

>>34996

In general, hard drives do not fail gracefully or in a way that is at all fixable. Enjoy your new cyberpunk paperweight.

You could take the platter out and use it as a coaster I suppose.

 No.35002

>>34973

nice catch, you think panels are in working order?

if nothing else, salvage the backlight.

 No.35005

>>35002

I have faith that a least one of them still works, but I still haven't had a chance to test them out. However I still don't know what I'm going to do with them even if they do.

 No.35006

>>35005

make screens? electronic parts are compatible with various lcd panels, they only need to have the same resolution.

if those are from laptops, i dont know how to drive them. i tried a few times with desktop lcd electronics, but it didnt work. dunno why tho

 No.35007

>>35006

yeah, I'm going to have to do some research, see what I can cobble together with my current junk pile

 No.35028

>>35006

Laptop LCDs use LVDS, which is incompatible with the digital standards used by desktops. For a while your only choice was scavenging parts from other broken laptops.

Now there are LVDS converters available and iirc you can build one for pretty cheap if you have the right parts.

 No.35030

>>35028

Desktops also use LVDS. LCD TVs too. It's all the same connector.

Maybe a different lvds version? different protocol?

nice catch today. urbexing in demolished hotel complex, stumbled across these.

one appears to be an alcatel-made office phone with still unidentified alps mount mech switches, other one is acer 6311 keyboard with acer-alps hybrid.

both are dated to '93.

rest is a telephone booth keypad and AMD486 processor.

supossedly there is a motorbike somewhere in the basement, but left that for some other time.

they aint bad. these are actually not switches, just a mechanic that makes it clicky and gives feedback force. underneath it is a three-layered membrane.

still unsure if i should salvage and try to sell them or clean up the keyboard and use it. thoughts?

 No.35110

>>35083

Keep the keyboard, it looks kickass.

The phone on the left would be best sold as a prop for a movie–maybe some up-and-comer is gonna try to make a low-budget scifi flick.

The keypad can be sold for similar uses, or possibly hacked into a neat device of some sort (homemade keypad lock?). The processor…not sure what you can do with that, it's basically a hobby item since things have advanced so far. Maybe it belongs in a museum.

 No.35113

>>25748

I found a shit ton of comic books, action figures, and a Boba Fett helmet in a dumpster once. Some angry mother must have thrown their kids shit away; poor guy.

I also occasionally find some good books in the Library dumpster. It is astounding that they decide to throw perfectly good shit away.

nah m8

He should try and get it working though, might be a fun project.

 No.35116

Half Priced Books is another great spot, sometimes they straight fill dumpsters with books, and even movies, and games. I think they only do it like once a year though.

Used to dive with a friend of mine in plated biker boots. Any time I stepped on a nail, it would just bend. We'd just dive in the industrial part of town to find cool broken machinery and the like.
