New players, read this!

First, welcome new players. We need you. Similar to fight club, if it is your first time on the board - you have to evolve a creature. So how do these games work? There are really only 2 rules:

1) Take an image, alter it somehow, save as .PNG

2) Post the image with a short description on what has changed

You should also name your creature, you can keep the old name or give it a new one. New names tend to signify a splinter-species. This thread does not count as a game, We currently have these games active:

http://8ch.net/evol/res/30.html#30

http://8ch.net/evol/res/2.html#2

http://8ch.net/evol/res/53.html#53

There are a few other guidelines for playing.

> If a previous player made a change (added wings for example) the next evolution should not remove the same change. It can breed out over time, but allow the species to splinter and grow first.

> There is no winning, you do not "own" these creatures. The point of this game is to have a good time and help build a universe. If you're a control freak we don't want you playing.

> Please get my approval for a new game. We need to build on what little we have, Rome fell because it spread itself too thin.

I want you to play and have fun. If you find the game is stale or want to add something new, let me know. This is not my game, it is ours.

Welcome to /evol/! Let the nubs be your guide.

This is a place to host evolution games, which is an image based game where one takes an image and changes it slightly. The new picture can either be a sub-species, or replace the main species. The rules are very loose and fun:

1) Take an image, alter it somehow, save as .PNG

2) Post the image with a short description on what has changed

Current game - >>>2

That’s really it. We don’t expect everyone to be an amazing artist, that’s not what the game is about. The core of the game is to have fun and build up an imaginary world full of crazy creatures. Remember, there is no winning or losing, don’t get upset if someone takes a creature and evolves it in a way you don’t like, just go with it.

This thread can be used to ask any questions about how these games work. I will also be posting examples and previous games.

I knew this question would come up eventually. For now, I want to keep things in the same universe. If we get enough players we could branch off into new worlds/mini-games. But I am not unkind and I love new blood in the mix.

I am fine with you starting a new game, but it has to be in the same world as the other 3, deal? It has been a tradition to start with 3 creatures (plants and fungi are also welcomed), but you may start with as many as you feel are necessary. A new biome would be nice as well.

>>150

So if I'm reading this right, anyone at any time can create a new game? I understand not wanting too many, so as not to spread our current population too thin, so what's the limit? I'm the guy that recently made the Blygir, and I'd love to start a thread with a really unique biome. I might get a trip soon.

71095b No.318

>>317

Absolutely! Though, as you said, I do not want a flood of games going on. If your idea is unique, I want to do it. Also, try to make it synch up with the map thread, draw a tile on the map if something on there doesn't fit your needs.

My only rule is that it has to stay "in universe". All of these creatures stand the chance of meeting each other in a future game.

Welcome to the deep sea!

Here we have 3 creatures all hanging around volcanic vents:

Ble – A crude cell. It is slightly photosynthetic. It has no form of locomotion and just rolls around on the ocean floor

Uing – A fat-bodied worm. It feeds mostly on debris put out from the vents.

Syx – An immobile predator. The Syx reaches out attempting to grab anything it can. It uses its roots to attach to the sides of volcanic vents.

Let us go forth and populate the deep sea!

their photosynthetic organ all but vestigial now, the new Blygirs develop sleeker and faster bodies, and become better ambush predators.

Blygirs have also gained the ability to vomit stomach acid onto hard-bodied prey or would-be predators, giving it an edge to help it compete with Uing-Lo at the top of the food chain.

The Syxarchius splits into the Syxiar Nomad. It has modeled it's third limb into a prehensile appendage. It walks on two legs, but now gathers debris and carrion with its spare tentacle and feeds it into its large mouth. During lean times, it can filter-feed.

So before I do anything drastic and mix habitats together, we need to make a solid effort to map out our world so far. This will be a map of all land playable and can possibly change over time.

Because there are only a few of us, the rules will be simple:

1) Pick a tile

2) Draw a rough outline of the continent/island

3) Make sure you connect to any open spaces if left in an adjacent tile

I have marked the currently running games, so if you choose that tile make sure it makes sense (desert cannot be in the ocean/shores can't be in the middle of a continent).

I think this will be fun. Remember, this is our whole world - just a few pixels could be the size of England!

Welcome to the mountain! Though not as dry as the desert, the mountain inhabitants still struggle finding water. Winter comes fast at this altitude and is very unforgiving. Here are the creatures available:

Alo - A simple mammal. It is herbivorous and its soft fur is designed to camouflage with snow. During harsh storms packs of Alo snuggle together to reserve warmth. Alos are very social creatures.

Dree - Tiny bird. Dree eat mostly fruit, nuts, and seeds from nearby vegetation. They nest high in trees and occasionally scavenge carcasses that have been bested by the cold.

Enti - A balloon-like creature. The enti possess no intellect or sensory organs. They create a gas inside a specialized bladder that allows them to float into the air. They can slowly release this gas to drop back down. They land on trees and suck the sap from them, often killing part of the tree as a result.

Hi! This seems like a fun little board so I want to participate.

The inti which fall into the ground start to specialize living in the ground. They start to develop grey, hard nail-like protrusions on their body to protect them from the aumex and to help them burrow in the ground.

Their gas bladders also begin to shrink , and they now only rarely float in the air, that is if they surface at all.

They now prefer to suck nutrients from the roots of trees instead.

The aumex mainly detect Into in their burrows with their scent of smell, although they can use their sight, just not as well.

Because of this the Into has gained a thicker mouthpiece, in layers. The Into's scent it makes when it eats is much fainter now.

I would like to start a new game with a slightly different factor - no descriptions. Just let the pictures speak for themselves. So, here are the rules:

1) Edit a creature

2) It replaces the former creature, unless the word "Split" is used.

Other than that, there is no need for a creature description. Simply edit as you see fit.

Welcome to the great desert. In front of you is an open landscape shaped with occasional hills and mountains. The heat here is oppressive and the land is cracked, dry, and dead. For a few months out of the year, the desert springs to life with these creatures:

Dico - A strange and fragile plant. During the dry months it shrivels and rolls across the landscape. When the rain comes the Dico hydrates and races to go to spore. Spores that land in pools form new young Dicos and the cycle begins anew.

Nish - Shelled invertebrates. Their dried eggs come to life in the vernal pools. They eat anything organic voraciously (including other Nish). When they can, they mate and their eggs dry as the wet season ends.

Iby - A weak mollusk. Its clear body is its main defense. It spends the wet months cooling and feeding in the waters. When the dry months come the Iby dig into the mud and cover themselves with mucus. They rely on their fat reserves until the next wet season brings fresh Dico.

A different variant of the Ibja, the Ibda, evolve on the side of the chasm opposite of the Ibjin. The ibdin, while retain the crawling locomotion, are much more capable of defending themselves using their flexible, barbed tails. While slow, they are capable of burrowing shallow holes in the ground, using their tails to mimick sprouting dica. When prey gets close enough, they move and stab their prey using their barbed tails or clawed arms.

The ibda are nomadic, and some even find their way back into the chasm where they return to the water. They are still quite capable of breeding with ibda and sometimes create fertile young. Because of their distance from the other side, it is unknown if ibda and ibjin can create fertile offspring or if they could even create offspring at all.

As larger, more deadly animals evolve a new species splits off from the Nish Crawler Tanker. The Nish tank acts as a defens from the larger beasts of the desert, rather than useing pincers and claws to hunt the smaller desert beasts (like the other ones) these large animals ram into opponents, this means their legs have become large and thick, in addition to this, its other legs have formed a small plate on the underbelly to protect its water source (as the ramming would otherwise burst it).

Over many years of dicong occasionally growing roots or vines where they shouldn't, it eventually grew a controllable matrix of root and vines over some of the plant's flowers.

The soft plant matter serves to enable this new organ to be moveable- as many leaves and vines are by a plant- usually a back and forth motion in most plants, these vines simply snap inward when they detect vibration.

The creature that is responsible for this are trapped inside the flower where the flowercarnivoroots begin to ooze toxic, dissolving material, to get the nutrients from the insect.

after 5 sunrises, the plant opens back up.

Male Ibjin develop a hairy purple mustache which grows similarly to the dicad flowers. While it is primarily used as camouflage, the Ibjin also use mustaches as a mating display, many grooming their facial hair.

Mustaches only grow on mature males, however, those who do have it, are capable of using mustaches to disguise themselves as dicad flowers. While disguised, they await prey in the form of niz, which they later strike down with their hooked claws.

I want to apologize for my inactivity this past week. I am extremely happy that a few of you keep evolving and posting. If I'm not mistaken, there might even be a few new faces around here. This is all very exciting for me.

So I'm going to propose an idea and I want you to let me know if you are on board with it or not.

When I ran these games in the past, I always added events. These are changes that are meant to hasten evolution - really get a fire under the ass of DNA. These can be natural disasters, bacterial outbreaks, sunlight changes, really anything. At some point I will try to implement those.

Now the question: how would you feel about divine intervention? In my most successful games I used an ancient group of creatures called the "stygians". They were gods who had lost their natural bodies. All of them would give "gifts" to their followers which were randomly generated mutations. Does this sound like something most of you might be interested in?

I'd say intense climate change would definitely cause a lot of change, like *if* I'm right was a large reason for many tree dwelling creatures to adopt a more terrestrial life style for example.

There could also be some merging of the biomes, causing creatures to need to compete with each other.

10086c No.279

Judging from the map thread, it looks like there's a lot of land and not a lot of ocean. This could mean that sea levels are low and most of the water is ice in the form of humongous icecaps- which is totally plausible, especially with the large pangaea we seem to have. Or that could just be one half of the planet and the other half is probably mostly water.

Hard to say until it all comes together. Approach the map with an open mind though - the coast/shores can be off an island or disconnected continent.

Alright /evol/-Knievels, this is your boy Darwinbrah.

I've been taking a look at the way this game's been going and have become disappointed in the lack of scientific backing and general astuteness behind the creation of different beings and the changes made. So I'm going to give a few lessons on a whenever I feel like it basis talking about how life happened and how it turned into all the neat little shapes and sizes it's come to on Earth.

It probably isn't as fascinating to you as it is to me, but if nothing else, the board needs some traffic. If I got anything wrong, just tell me. I'll do some extra research, then probably debate you on it.

If you want a more science-minded game, you can feel free to start one. If you want to play the current games and guide them to follow real-life evolution, be my guest. The games are more about creativity and drawing MS paint creatures, not a biology lesson.

I have seen other players and game masters putting to many restrictions on the games and they end up as colossal failures. The point of these games is to have fun, not be a stickler.

I just wanted to help bump the board a little bit while also having a discussion about biology, which I had hoped would have actually moved faster. Oh well. I won't be using a name while posting in the other threads, not that you can't figure out which one's me via IPs.

194332 No.261

Personally I don't want the evolution to mimic Earth's because that's too predictable, but some of the ignorance about biology and ecology annoys me too. Personally I'd welcome more scientific discussion, obviously the games don't need to be totally accurate to real biochemistry and such, and I don't mind drastic skips if they could have reasonably happened over time, but a bit more logic can never hurt.

Thanks for the link, these are really interesting.

7ab03a No.262

I already made the thread so I'm going to keep on doing these!

Part 2: Natural Selection

This is the big part of Darwin's theory, laying a foundation for pretty much everything evolution. Natural selection is where nature decides who gets to live and who gets to die. A lot of people like to say "survival of the fittest", or the "strongest survive"; but it's not always like that. When it is survival of the fittest, that's when you have different species competing over a different niche. I'll cover food chains in a different lesson though.

In nature, whoever lives just happens to live, and those that continue to live eventually get the opportunity to reproduce. Carl Sagan, in his show, used the example of soft shell crabs in Japan. In his example, fishermen used to catch crabs, then throw back the ones that had faces on their backs. Because those crabs weren't being eaten, they were more capable of passing on their genes. Thus in later generations, more face-backed soft-shell crabs began scurrying about.

66997f No.160[Reply]

SHORES:

The shores are a paradise for life, having many miles of water and area to grow, with easy access to the sun. In addition, the temperature is a lukewarm tempature, hardly damaging to any creature.

There are three creatures who have their hold in the shores.

The Sprun

This creature is a colony of smaller, identical cells. each cell is oblate with two tentacles on each end. This allows them to manipulate water and the nutrients floating through it. It pumps the water along it's body, distributing the nourishment equally along the cells. The cells grow and split individually, and decay into their basic parts as they die. They eat everything they can break down.

The Ayalt

The Ayalt is simple- it clings to the sand, other living objects, or the surface tension of the water. It uses photosynthesis to process nutrients from the water into proteins, and a substance similar to fat or sugar witch is energy rich. It produces oxygen from breaking down carbon dioxide.

The Clend

The clend is a mobile, small creature that lives in and plucks from Sprun. It reproduces "traumatically", hunting down another clend, tearing it open and placing small, virus like objects which uses the partially live body to produce many tiny clend. A clend has no gender, and the ripper passes on more genetic code then the rippee, because they tend to live longer, which drives up competition- rip or be ripped. They have no competitors but themselves as of yet, so they have little defense but an offense.

!!The shores have plenty of room for diversity, so it is rare for a species to be replaced when a new one evolves, unless one fills the same niche so well it destroys the competition completely.!!

ENDROOL

Some Clendrool have become much less plump and large, which are both features searched for when mating. This allowed many to over time dig farther, smaller tunnels in Sprumoto and Sprun, which they've adapted to. They now hide in these tunnels until they see a Clend or Clendrool swim past, which they tunnel into like a Sprun, drool all over their insides and swim away. This increases the host survivability partially, but still they rarely survive what with a gaping hole inside them and with the hundreds of Endrools pouring out.

They have larger clutches than their predecessors, so they are, without a doubt, pests for the Sprun and Sprumoto, and not just a small nuisance like the Clend, Clendrool, or Clendroth.

I'm evolving twice in a row here, but I hope it's ok.

PRUMOTO

Prumoto takes advantage of it's tentacles to the next level- it walks along the sea floor, tumbling and spinning with it's simple tentacles.

Portions of the sprun can communicate, not with the advanced electric systems of the Clend species but the cells are able to put proteins and waste out in between two cells.

This way the tentacles know when to start or stop, start walking and wafting the plant and detritus rich sand and water up, or sit down and conserve energy, temporarily going back to their old ways.

The Clend species both benefit and not by this. Some Clend are now able to go to new areas with less competition or more to rip open, but sometimes the fall out and aren't able to make it back in, lacking a place to hide from the ripping.

I'm actually curious how many people are still playing here. I feel that we need more people. Where are some good places to recruit for this board?

4chan is out because you can't even link to 8chan. I already posted on /tg/, /atheism/(I figured they would like evolution), and /qu/. Any other suggestions?

That would be fantastic. I know this game is not for everyone, but every time I have ever run a game people have fallen in love with it. If you think your friends are those people, please refer them here.

Also, the board is one week old today - and look how far we have come!

I don't know but there was a board shilling thread on /kind/ and I posted /evol/ there.
