Can I use regular skin moisturizer to soften/moisturize a jacket?

I figure it's also a kind of skin, it's just been dead for a long time. Naturally I would test it on a small area first.

Ok, I tried on it the inside of the lapel and left it overnight. Nothing bad happened so I put it on the rest of the jacket and let it dry on the shade. I think there was a marginal improvement, making the leather less dry and less noisy. Don't know how it would compare to the professional leather softeners and the linseed oil that is usually recommended.
