i'll give you guys a short summary
>around 300 common era
>east and west Rome divided
>emperor Constantine is too shy to push for his claim to the throne, he becomes a soldier instead
>he actually survives his tour, everybody else in his side of Rome was assassinated
>people beg him to become emperor, he does
>he defeats the opposing emperor and unifies Rome
Now Constantine was a lot like Alexander the great and George S. Patton, a soldier ruler. To the Romans, somebody like this was god, and throw on the fact that he unified Rome, nobody even flinched when he announced Rome to be a christian society instead of pagan.
Now this wasn't a super big deal right away, outside of some small rebellions and assassinations. Several other things then happened simultaneously.
>the Mongols or the Huns or whatever they where were pushing Germanic barbarians away from their homelands and into Roman territory: all of them.
>All of these Germans are pagan
>there where a few years of shit harvests
So, the Germans beg Rome for quarters from the horse people, and the Romans accept: on the terms that they get to fuck their mothers, take their sons as slaves, and then sell their bodies to science
>The Germans accept, but get pissed
>most of the time these pathetic rebellions are shit on by Rome
>However, a young Roman ruler named Valens or something decides to not wait for reinforcements and takes an evenly matched battle against some Germans
