GUIDELINES- not quite rules, but good to follow for good posting
1. Check the catalog before posting to see if a thread may already be available for your discussion.
1a. Avoid making threads expecting people to just do your homework for you. Show some work yourself in starting the discussion instead of just "guys what was the main reason for the fall of Sebastianism in the 19th century"
2. Be prepared to present good sources for anything you claim, especially if you come here to posit opinions you know are controversial.
3. Upon discussion, no consensus was reached as to what should be considered the limit of "history". I'd advise avoiding discussing things beyond the fall of the Soviet Union- seems to me a good cutoff- but provided you don't attempt to make it a /pol/ thread in disguise, you should be able to get away with threads about events until some 10 years before the present year.
4. If you have any problem with the moderation here, or suggestions, please post them here instead of making a thread for it (not really historical-related) or making one in /meta/ (no guarantee I'll see it).
In other words, don't be a dumbass. This board's been generally working fine along on self-moderation, lurk around and have fun.

At first glance this board looks bretty good and the controversial threads seem fairly balanced with more than one camp coming out to play. For now it's comfy, but I'm sure as it grows it will go to shit and become a pol or leftypol hugbox.

I think most "controversial threads" shouldn't even be here: no amount of proof can convince partisans, and recent historiography is full of bias -> they belong in /pol/. Therefore I hide them and only check them sometimes for the giggles. At least they inflate the PPH count.

No such thing as bad press. I've said it before, this is the best board on 8chan, and the only thing I can see that needs improvement is traffic.
And as for my two cents about moderation, the only reason we'd need active policing is if we start getting spammed. Anything pants-on-head retarded can be hidden, as long as it isn't intrusive.

Maybe I dunno how to moeblobify enough, but eh? I feel the best board-tans are simpler in design, but also striking and a bit absurd. Joan of Arc is a woman in an armour, dunno if that sells that well.
When we had a quick discussion of this a year ago, I think I suggested a history professor, and someone suggested historical Jesus. Just to catch up on suggestions.

I might give this a whirl. As for best mascot, a history professor (or the ever-poor research associate trying to impress her professor-sensei) is the best fit for /his/. Joan of Arc is more than a woman in armor, she's a very particular symbol for a unique time and place that doesn't translate well outside of it. She wouldn't fit Classics, Eastern European or Middle Eastern topics, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, or early modern Europe.
Plus our Joan would inevitably be competing with other moeJoans out there, an uphill battle to be sure.

How about a history professor who cosplays into historical suits? That'd give us some variety. Maybe decide a specific palette for her for recognizability, like how if you have a redhead with green and purple you can identify her as Vivian even if she's not in the sweater.

He's just so fitting, really. A guy who loves history and just wants to study it, but isn't a professional historian. A guy who's surrounded by a politically charged and divisive environment, but generally wants to be left alone and not drawn into that argument besides picking out historical ironies or inaccuracies that get thrown around. I'll elaborate on why I don't want him as a mascot:
1) I've never heard of him :^)
2) In general I strongly dislike animemes and consider them alien and plebeian. I hope I'm not the only one (^:
3) Having an anime character as a mascot would be like having, for instance, a Nazi. No matter how justified, it screams "weeb board", (or "/pol/ satellite" for the Nazi).
4) Having a Japanese novel character as a mascot, when (I bet) no one here is Japanese or has read the novels is just like a 36th century "galactic hero" named Reinhard von Müsel—unfitting and untasteful.
Of course if he's so perfect in every other aspect than he surely will fit in this board's culture and shit, but as the official /his/ face? Pls don't.

On a more serious note I dislike the idea too simply on merit of not wanting it to be explicitly another character. That said, using Wen-Li as a basis from whom, maybe merging other traits of the board (a small /pol/ rib?), in a similar way to how, say, Tomoko - So much social despair + caucasian + redhead + older + daily dose sweater = Vivian, we could start in order to end up with a /his/tan, might not be such a stupid idea.
