Yeah but we don't need to do that anymore, all lands are conquered, military is now voluntary, a paying job and becoming more and more automated.
Pre-1000 years ago the chance of a man dying in war or via murder was ~15%. Today it is less then 1/100th that.
>implying you wouldn't want to protect your fucking property a.k.a. family
No why not put the gun in your wife's hand and you go cower in the basement with the kids while she fights off the intruder? Men have been bred to fight to protect women, and women have been bred to expect that, I'm not a animal, I'm sentient, so I'm going to choose my own way.
>implying power/freedom doesn't directly impose responsibility on the person in possession of it
It does, that the whole problem! I don't want those responsibilities. I'm giving up the power, here you take it, you deal with the responsibilities.
>implying you couldn't be a wanderer or a hermit
Very rarely, in the time of feudalism you were either a lord or a surf, bound to your lord's land, even merchants. Not many had a chance at being a monk and you had to be well born to even get into a monastery.
>implying European folk tales aren't all about young princes going off to prove themselves and find their place in whatever the fuck they want to do
How many of those stories end with the prince saying "I don't want a women, or children or material possessions, just enlightenment" Only one I know, and it is not European.
