The Salma dam in Afghanistan is approaching completion. It is being built by an Indian firm with coordination with local engineers and is partly funded by the Indian government as a goodwill gesture. 90% of the work is over Indian sources said. The project is expected to be completed by middle of 2016. The project was started in January 2006, but was delayed due to regional insecurity.

A total of $300 million was spent on the dam project. It is expected to produce 42 MW of electricity from 3 turbines and water nearly 80,000 hectares of farmland. The water reservoir, which is 20 km in length and 3.7 km in width, started filling up last month and is expected to be completed in around 9-12 months. The dam, which is 107 meter high, 550 meter long and 500 meter wide, has the gross water capacity of 633 million cubic meters.

The dam would be handed over to the Afghan Government, which would take care of the maintenance after the project has been completed. Construction material for the project was shipped to Iran from India before being ferried by road to Afghanistan. Both Afghan and Indian workers were hired for construction works.
