>"The Syrian army and its allies have totally broken the siege on Nubul and Zahraa," a senior army official told Reuters.
>The siege is said to have lasted for 40 months. The Syrian troops were assisted by local fighters in order to break it.
>The Syrian Army has also managed to cut off supply routes for the terrorists between the towns of Mayer and Maarasta al-Khan
>The end to the siege has been described as a major “breakthrough” for the Syrian army
>Atwan attributed the success of the operation to the Russian forces providing a “very efficient air cover” that in cooperation with Syrian ground forces resulted in “huge advances.”

Map is pro terrorist and fucking biased.
In particular it shows "rebel" control zones that are actually the Islamic Front (Jihadi scum with no allegiance to IS, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_Front_%28Syria%29 KSA puppet) and Al Nusra (Al Qaeda in Syria). Same shit as IS different assholes.
FSA, the regular non-moon god crazy rebels, stands for Formerly Seen Alive, they still have some parts of the country (cities… only place where you can find enough youth that actually reject both Assad's and Islamism) but you can number them on one hands… (part of Allepo, Damas area, part of Daraa near the Jordan/Israeli border).
ALL the rest in Green is Jihadist controlled.

Turks, and the front lines aren't as solid as they're shown on the maps
I imagine it's been somewhat easy for guys to sneak across the front lines where needed
Assad for a while had a problem with not having enough trusted/loyal troops to fully deal with every situation that came up, but aid from Iran and Hezbollah has really helped in that aspect, as well as recent Russian air support and mechanics

FSA was largely western fiction. The US couldn't say they were supporting islamic groups, so they created "Free Syrian Army".
Now that they have dropped the act, and support al Nusra and the islamic front quite openly.

The control of areas isn't as clear cut as it seems in the pic. There's a lot of neutral ground, which both parties use to supply their troops. The routes are hampered, but aren't completely cut off.
Plus Russian airdrops for the Government and Israeli/Turkey drops for rebels also help.

Essentially in those areas, it's trench warfare. SAA has strong points, the rebels have strong points neither has the resources to actually take those by force.
But the rebel areas are mainly done, SAA/Russia/Iran have been methodically closing all the access points from Turkey. They will soon be all besieged.
Then they will concentrate, mop one up, rince, repeat.
For the SAA enclaves, the ones in the kurd areas aren't besieged, the kurds are on Assad's side since day one.
They want their independence sure but they know perfectly they're next on the list of Turkey/KSA shitlist (since a shitload of them are secular AND communists), also they already had an OK deal in their areas with Assad with minimum interference of Damas and a good autonomy. So yeah SAA is their only realist option on short term, even if they have different long term goals. (the kurds of Syria are a different power structure from the Kurds in Iraq, the Syrian ones are directly linked with PKK, have old soviet communist ties, etc…)
The other enclave are airbases + whatever the soldiers manage to hold. They came with garrisons, fairly ample supplies, direct links to Syrian Airforce for assistance and they're resupplied by air drops or helicopters.

>FSA was largely western fiction.
Largely, but that's not the most insane part, those people are actually moderates are more and more on the side of Russia and SAA… because they don't want 90's Afghanistan, or today KSA, and have, what? 4 years of war? That made them a lot wiser.
The Russian short list is apparently made of 11 movements for 7 000 combatant… They (at least that's what the Russian MoD says) get support and liaison from Russian Airforce, because they're more or less constantly under attack by either IS or the "moderate Jihadist"…

We took down Mubarak, where's Egypt now? We took down Qaddafi, Libya is now a failed state with two governments claiming legitimacy and a completely separate ISIS cell forming there freely. What makes you so sure? The Saudis have already established in Yemen that they do not give a fuck about national sovereignty and are emboldened by the US, and more importantly the US media and how they spread the information, or how they stem the information. They aren't going to let Syria return to normal and if that means leading an "anti-terror" coalition to "fight ISIS" and get in the mix in Syria, they're going to do it. The Saudis have two options, launch an offensive and see what happens, or let Iran establish a 3 country alliance that has access to the Mediterranean with a Russian naval base. Either option by the way they're fucked domestically. As oil goes below $20 a barrel, their economy follows which leads to civil insurrection (there's a small percentage of Shiites in Saudi Arabia and I believe Iran has been or will be working with them).

there is little consequence for the saudis invading yemen and they still got #REKT, assad could easily hand out MANPADS and ATGMs to hezbollah, the PMU and every other anti-sunni group in that scenario with little to lose and has done so before in limited numbers, which would make saudi occupation far more costly anywhere they try to intervene
there is also russia as a factor, and russia allowing saudi arabia to invade syrias airspace in a hostile scenario is extremely unlikely, and even if they did S-400s could destroy any aircraft in the saudi arsenal 100+ miles before it even reaches syria, not to mention their naval air defense systems

There's not a small percentage of shiites in SA but significant enclave led on by recently martyred separatist leader. I forget arabic names, but SA executed shiite imam who was calling for separation of sunni and shiite SA. This sent tremors across the troubled region. What's more, the troubled region is literally on the opposite coast of Iran. What's even more funny about that is SA army is designed to be inefficient to avoid coups. It gets better! If SA overstretches itself into Syria and comes in contact with battle hardened troops (even ISIS ones will do), they will get fucked sideways and probably lose more ground in Yemen and trigger more separatist tensions in the eastern shiite regions.
Oh and recently due to bad economic situations and diminishing reserves (they have 100 bln yearly deficit and 500 bln reserves left to back them up) they have cut some of their generous gibs. This means entire Saudi portion of Saudi Arabian population has less money overnight.
Overall it sounds like SA will split or break apart completely by 2020.

The problem though is that Saudi Arabia will go into Syria with Saudi troops, get blown the fuck out by Assad/Iraqi militias/Iranian commandos, and then make it an international issue thus getting the US involved. The only arguement you could make is the rebels went behind the SAA lines. Got a Syrian chemical warhead or loaded sarin into some type of advanced rocket they captured or never could make.
And then fired it at Ghouta. Everyone knows the regime did it. The regime has barrel bombed and chlorine gassed everywhere in the country indiscriminately.

As to your second point, I don't disagree in the least. The only thing Muslims understand is strength, and they need strong rulers to keep them in their place. That much is obvious. meanwhile turkey hasnt sent any flights over syria since russia placed S-400 air defense systems there last year, Saudi Arabia is like a cornered rat right now and can be far more unpredictable though

It's not, it's the ransom of those last months.
Essentially the SAA has taken nearly all their strategic objectives in northwestern syria + a couple near Damas and Daraa.
In doing so they've cut off the rebels which are doomed either to retreat, often under fire, or wait for the cleanup and just die.
We should start to see pockets and then reductions in the next months. But the momentum is completely in favor of the SAA.
Which is why you're hearing squealing noise about civilians (who cared about them dying or fleeing rebels held areas those last 4 years) and see some great source of liberal tears like this:

The FSA when given TOW missiles was supposed to be required to provide video evidence and return used missile tubes for all launches in order to be able to get more, they were also supposed to not give them to ISIS or any other non FSA group. ISIS has not captured any rebel areas recently afaik, which means they were most likely given to them. It would also mean Saudi/Qatar are indirectly supplying ISIS with knowledge of where arms are going.

In Washington, State Department circles, in a briefing to US media, said the time had come to establish a no-fly security zone in northern Syria. They said: “Once a zone were established we do not believe Russia would challenge the stronger US and NATO forces, particularly if they were operating mainly from Turkey.”
The next day, Friday, Moscow came back with a sharp response: Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said: “Russian air defense systems enable early detection of threats to Russian aircraft flying combat missions over Syria and provide adequate measures to ensure flight safety.”
This was a reminder of the sophisticated air defense S-400 and S-300 missile systems Russia installed at its Syrian air base after the Turkish air force downed a Russian warplane in November.
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem put it more crudely: “Any foreign troops entering Syria would return home in wooden coffins.”
He advised armed opposition groups fighting the government offensive in the area to lay down their weapons because, he said, “government advances signal that the five-year-old Syria war is nearing its end.”
DEBKAfile’s military sources have seen no sign of any ceasefire or even a slowdown in the Russian-led Syrian-Iranian Aleppo offensive.

Russias airpower is not even the major reason for the success. They also have massive artillery on the ground. They are creating a massive artillery barrage (guided by drones) before the syrian army moves in. They als have 10 T90 tanks there, which are basically invincible in this war. The devices on the tanks are really against anti tank missiles and are improvised by the russians. The syrian soldiers were also provided with body armor. Also mostly from Iran, the Russian airstrikes have changed the tide of the war and there has been a lot of equipment given to the SAA but Iran has been vital to keeping the Syrian army supplied and accounts for most small arms, ammunition, uniforms, advisers and has even been giving Syria SU-17/SU-22 bombers and UAVs when Iran itself needs more aircraft and has been doing so since the beginning of the war with constant cargo flights to Syria
