That said, does it monitor everything you do and send it all to Microsoft? Most likely, yeah. but not any more or less than previous Windows versions
I guess what I'm trying to say is; if you truly value privacy and don't want to be fucked by globalists, just get GNU/Linux, If you're on Windows 7 right now because you thunk you're safer than being on Windows 10, you're a fool and upgrading isn't going to kill you at this point really.

Technically, Linux already has, since Linux is just a kernel (the most popular kernel of all time in fact)
You're probably thinking of the GNU OS, which typically uses the Linux kernel, I have GNU/Linux on my PC, lets just say that Linux kernel 4.0 breaks AMDs official drivers, causing a kernel panic, I had to wait for package maintainers for my distro just to push a patch for it so I can boot my machine up, AMD took months to respond to this as well. This was all on Ubuntu, the update broke some of my programs as well like Lightworks
GNU/Linux is still far from perfect, which is why I'm still using Windows on my other machines, maybe I'd have better luck with Intel, who does in fact make their official drivers open source

oca.telemetry.microsoft.com.nsatc.net

Surely now you guess what it is. Even if you install Windows 10 on an encryption program to communicate with someone after
Internet, thanks to the collection of information from the keyboard (key logging), Microsoft can read what you wrote. Can not seem to
capture what you wrote the other side of encrypted communication, but at least capture one-sided communication
a very serious matter.

Special situation arises, if anywhere in Windows 10 you type the name of a famous American film.
Windows 10 will start by itself after some time to look at your hard drive in a folder with media files and indexing them.
Indexed file is then anonymously sent to these servers about 30 minutes when the computer is idle,

And what I said was completely accurate, people give their opinion and then follow it up with a question to the audience, and thats how conversation begins.
On imageboard giving your comment a nice reaction image, although a refrrshing feature that might add some conversational value to your comment will inevitably be nothing more than eye catcher for people with small attention spans and is used by shills and those that have nothing of value to add to conversation but mere reaction.

Just how much "more" is there to make them this desperate to get people to upgrade?
That's the main question here.
Because even if win7 is somewhat unsafe when you install it for the first time, we know how to disable MS's telemetry nonsense manually.

The behaviour of windows 10 when left idle is the same as windows 7. after a few minutes of idle the harddisk starts thrashing and lots of programs appear in the task manager. When I 1st noticed this it freaked me out, and I thought it was spying on me. I did checks at the time, and everything i tested for confirmed it was spying, i.e. uploading all my files to some dump at microsoft.
So I tried to switch to linux - GNU , but my god its a crap OS. I don't see how they could have fucked it up so hard after all these years of refinement. I think there's some microsoft agents in there fucking it up.

What's gonna happen is I'll have to look up an internet guide every time I want to do anything.
When enough pushback against microshit happens, new options will bloom. Like for example, modifying minecraft back a few years ago, you had to do all sorts of shit with the .bin file. Then it got popular enough that one-click mod programs were developed. Same will happen here. No one is happy with windows. Every second distribution is complete garbage that even normies hate it, and it's overall on the steep decline. In maybe a year or two we'll see something usable be developed that you don't need a compsci degree to understand.

I'm pretty sure this is already happening. I purchased a small laptop tablet to do my writing on, since I'm an author by trade, and I explicitly chose one that had Windows 8 on it, and not 10, since 95% of the new stuff they're pushing now has it come with 10 preinstalled.
About half a month ago, it automatically updated to Windows 10 when I wasn't around. I'm not tech savvy enough to know how to remove it cleanly, and I don't want to lose what Office files I have, since it's got my writing on it, so nuking it isn't really an option either. I don't want to just buckle down and use it, either, since information created and recording using Office on 10 is confirmed to be tracked and recorded. I don't want some basement flunky in SoCal to get free copies of all of my drafts. How do I know I wouldn't write a book, only for some nobody halfway around the world to publish it first? I have no assurance that won't happen, and under 10, it certainly is a thing that can.

You have 30 days to revert back to the older version after W10 is installed, it saves your old system settings in a folder called windows.old just in case there's an issue. Buy a cheap USB thumb drive and backup all you important files before trying anything just to be on the safe side. After 30 days that folder is deleted and you'll have to reinstall from scratch, considering how slow and bloated Windows can get this might not be that bad a thing.
And there is much better software for writing out there than Word, once you get into pure text editors you'll wonder how you ever dealt with crap like word processors designed for office use. I'm pretty sure Word saves everything 'to the cloud' as a feature, so even on W8 you'll have assurance that your work isn't being uploaded to a server somewhere.

Or you can have your local IT shop do it for you.

cd : changes directory
cd ../ : goes back a directory
cd / : changes directory to root folder
ls : lists all files and folders in current directory
ls -a : lists all files including hidden files
ls -"file" : displays file of choice if in current directory.
mkdir 'name' : make a directory (file) of 'name' in current directory.
rm 'name' : removes the file 'name'
rm -r /var/www/html : removes the folder html and all of its' contents
apt-get update : updates package repos (downloads a list of programs available)
apt-get upgrade : upgrades all programs it can to newest version
apt-get install 'package' : installs program 'package' if it's in the repository.
apt-get remove 'package' : uninstalls a program, leaves files and prerequisite packages that were installed as well.
apt-get purge 'package' : completely removes a program, all of its' settings and files, and additional programs that it used. Be careful with this one.

There are litearlly 3 stages of optimizations in modern programming:
If underperformance encountered:
1st - rewrite module in C; if not fast enough:
2nd - rewrite module in Fortran; if not fast enough:
3rd - rewrite module in assembler.
The shittier the hardware (read: embedded) the higher the likelihood of ending up utilizing the 3rd stage.

I've never really had problems with distros being too demanding on my shit laptops. I've had more problems with straight-up hardware incompatibility though, which is something worth mentioning on Linux: it has kind of awful hardware support. I mean, it'll at least run on just about anything, but there's a lot of hardware where most distros get screwy. This especially applies to laptops, which don't have the same normal cut-and-dry hardware a prebuilt/self-built computer will have.
It's always a good idea to check the Archwiki for info on you're specific laptop, even if you aren't installing Arch. They'll have good info about specific issues with your laptop.

Its a very traditionalist OS. They are big on doing things the "correct way" or the "unix way". If you learned it in 2001 then you could sit down in front of a 2016 version and know how to get shit done. In 10 years you could expect everything to look mostly the same.
I have to maintain systems as old as 4.9 and its nice to not have to relearn shit when I have to fix something after a few years.
It can be riced out like any other BSD/Linux. It can run modern GNU stuff and browsers.
It WILL NOT support hardware that wont release specs. If your hardware vendor will only release closed source drivers they will go with out it. They don't sacrifice security for connivance.
These are the same guys who maintain OpenSSH. They forked and made a non-shit version of openssl called LibreSSL. They know crypto.
http://www.openbsd.org/security.html
If your looking for a point and click idiot proof OS then OpenBSD is not for you. Linux Mint might be more to your liking.
If you want to have an understanding of whats really going on under the hood then OBSD is great. Its so simple and logically laid out you can really get a handle on what is going on. On my main system my 'ps -ax' shows less then 25 processes. Everything is clearly named.

I'm on shitty Windows Vista, but I got sick and tired of the constant updates interrupting and hogging shit. So I purposely went in through safe mode and made only myself the one with permissions. Took away permissions on Microsoft auto updates, dumbed it down, firewall'd it, etc. Now even though it attempts to search for updates, I always get an error message now saying it couldn't find any updates. This has been going on for a few years, and my comp works just fine.

What would be a good linux distro for a complete newfag to freedoms? Actually, I did fiddle a bit with ubuntu, now that I remember. Well according to /tech/, anything that uses proprietary software and systemd is potential botnet. Ubuntu fits in that category.
However, anything that by default doesn't is advanced material in itself.
Mint is probably your best choice at this moment because it doesn't deal with systemd boogeyman yet. If you would like to give it a try, download it (my recommendation is xfce desktop environemnt) and run in virtualbox. This will take you a few hours until you get it all set up if you know literally nothing. If you get stuck, as here or on >>>/tech/

Its much SAFER then MS Windows.
Its a good start and will get you on the path of being not a newfag.
Linux Mint is a better, cleaner, more popular version of Ubuntu. If you can figure out how to use a mouse then you can figure it out. Its as easy to use as Windows 7. Their built in software tool makes finding and adding applications as simple as adding "apps" on an iPhone/Droid.

Well first start slow with console commands and preferably some distro with graphical interface. It's really the same as windows at this point. Now you will see various "rights". What are rights? They decide whether you, others or certain group has the privilege to read, edit or run a file. Administrator can take and give rights, through console preferably.
Then you have to download many linux alternatives to programs. Largely this is not a problem if you already delved into internet security before, because programs of this category are usually for both windows and linux. Wine is good for emulating windows games and programs. However, not everything works on it, though it does not mean that majority (if not all) programs won't work for you.
From what I recall ubuntu is fucked in some regards, though. It comes pre-configured and I saw first hand how it messed up some settings visually. Gnumeric, for example, was quite funky with ubuntu.
Other than that go look for guides when you encounter problems, because everything about linux is generally well documented. Not much is required from IT department to learn linux.

I still play vidya once in a while in my off time, or when getting together with fairly-redpilled friends just to shoot the shit and spend time together, but the key is that I almost always just emulate stuff from pre-2006. Most of the vidya from before then was lacking in multicultural stupidity, DLC/microtransaction/misc. Jewry, and could teach some valuable redpills too in some cases. I still remember learning useful things from vidya like complex words/terms and concepts like resisting corrupt authority as a kid even while I was too ADD to pay much attention in school.
Granted, most of what I play nowadays is Mario Kart with the aforementioned friends and that's not exactly redpill central in terms of content, but at least it's from a time before Jews demanded to reach into your wallet through software and demand shekels just for basic things already in the game but locked behind paywalls. No multicultural bullshit either, just a bunch of white/semi-white people and strange inhuman creatures (that aren't niggers) driving go-karts around. Not the best, but not pozzed into infinity like almost all modern media is either.
If you want to find good vidya, take my advice and emulate the good shit from before the multicultural hellhole era began. If your computer's relatively-new (less than or at 5 years old like mine is, maybe more) and not utter shit, it should be able to emulate stuff like Gamecube/PS2 games just fine. And even if it can't play those because you're using a laptop/toaster, you can still enjoy the non-pozzed classics from the 2D systems like SNES, NES and Genesis just fine, considering they ran on less computing power than the average oven does nowadays.

The problem is you'll need newer hardware that supports this feature and it's a pain in the ass to set up. I installed Gentoo (in a VM) with only a couple months of Linux experience (plus some lifetime terminal and programming experience). I'd tried Arch first, so I knew what a minimal install needed, but the Gentoo handbook walks you through it just as well.
The first time, I was scared off by the hundreds of kernel settings and USE flags plus a VM problem that I mistook for a broken install. Since every change I tried took a while to compile, I got discouraged and moved on with my distro shopping. But in reality I'd done it right, and when I tried again later everything went well. It became my full time OS shortly after.
And really, you can use genkernel and default desktop USE flags and have a decent system. Once you understand it all better you can try improving it or switching to hardened. Just keep full system backups.

WTF man? Why do I keep seeing people recommend Alpine to newbs?
It's not even ever going to be appropriate for most desktop/laptop/workstation users because it uses Musl libc, meaning that all sorts of software (in particular things related to games and media) is difficult to impossible to be compiled, and will never be in the repos.
It's useful as a basic workstation, and great as a server.
Basically, if people don't like linux because the selection of software, they're going to HATE Alpine because it has even less software. Also proprietary video drivers, nvidia etc, will not work on it
Antergos, fine. Another option would be Void (the non-musl version)

First thing MS did wrong was they totally blew it on their mobile OS. They saw how important mobile was going to be but they totally blew both the design and implementation of their mobile OS.
The second thing they fucked up was their response to their mobile disaster. Instead of just fixing the broken mess they made, they decided they would graft their horrible mobile interface on top of their desktop OS(windows 8). Functionally they shot themselves in both feet. They thought they could leverage their desktop dominance to force their mobile interface onto the market. Instead they just lost more customers to apple/linux/google.
The next cluster fuck Microsoft stumbled into was deciding to basically go full malware. Since no one wanted to actual pay for the mess they made, they decided they would make windows "free" and just turn it into a giant malware platform in order to harvest every drop of data they could mine and sell to marketers. Now they are in full tard mode trying to force every last win7 install to upgrade to WinJew.
Win7 is still a perfectly fine OS. If you want to get rid of the windows 10 nag shit, it's all located in c:\windows\system32\gwx
They did some weird shit with the permissions on that folder, you will have to go into the advanced properties and take ownership of the folder. Once you have access to modify the folder, I just changed the name of it on my system. I then went into the task scheduler and removed all tasks that were running shit from that gwx folder.

Hey, I'm on Windows 7.
Over the years I've used Linux here and there. I run Mint on my travel laptop used for browsing and office work, which is just fine. Over the years I've installed different distros on my workstation now and again, but I end up returning to Windows even if I'm not happy about that either. Always because of the usual problems with not being able to run stuff properly.
Well, with this new insanity Microsoft have going on I'm seriously considering a more permanent switch, even if I have to give up some things. Games… well, I don't really play games that much anymore except Nethack. I can give up modern games, most of them suck balls.
But my problem is that I have to be able to run Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. My livelihood depends in a good part on this. Programs like Gimp and Inkscape are just not viable alternatives for real work. I've tried things like Wine. That plain just doesn't work. I can read howtos and search for info, but I'm a user not a wizard.
I've heard about these virtual machine things that have gained traction in the last years. Are they a viable alternative? Is it hard setting up and getting to work? I have a win7 license, that is tied to my hardware through Microsofts retard systems, can I run that in a virtual machine on Linux, or do I have to get a pirated version (I'd rather not?) I tried out a friends virtual windows on his Linux box half a year ago or something, and I had problems getting my drawing tablet to work there, although it might have been an unrelated issue.
All in all, from a pretty casual user… Is it viable to make a switch here soon?

Sadly enough, theres really not. What do you plan to do? web surf, email, media? Puppy 6.3 is good for just that alone. If you need Social shit like IM, or games like steam, snag something more solidly deb. Try unbuntu (Yes I know its shit) but use that for a moment, learn how to web surf for installing shit not included in packet manager (Trust me, its far easyer then it sound on unbuntu), and see how well your system runs. Zorein 9 is also another decent choice for starting out with as its just a lighter ver of unbuntu but looks more like windows. I'm going to make some videos of my exp with Bodhi; installing shit, doing basic shit, playing games, working with wine, that will all be from a newbs pov (as I only have a mild amount of exp with Linux). If this thread dies, I'll just make a new one here, something like "win/pol/ nub works with linux" so I can share my exp with others.
Test driving Linux to find one right for you!
Get Oracal VM Virtualbox
Go to http://distrowatch.com/ and click "Random destro" then read what its about and if its compatible with your system (32bit/64bit/Arm/multi support)
Ensure it has the ability to install stuff you want
(Having synaptics package manager/terminal is a great bet that it WILL have stuff you want)
For easy of use, its better to start out with "Deb/Debian" based destros.
Basic checks after you found one!
Decide if you want it installed on USB or HDD
Decide if you want it to always be "live" (can not save stuff to it)

Or uniboot

and have one of them do up a usb live stick for you.
Lili will give you the option to have 4gigs of space for saving stuff too as well, but only 4 as lili formats the usb to fat16 iirr. Uniboot wont offer "persistent usb" option, but again, this is mostly to ensure the "live" destro wont implode your system upon boot.

It's the easiest to use, pick the cinnamon version, all you need to know is if you have a 64 or 32 bit machine.
If you don't want to bother with learning any details, just let the installer do everything on default. It just works, it already has plenty of codecs installed, firefox and stuff, and you can get most of the programs you need for zero effort with the included packet manager.
In fact, in many ways it's easier than windows.

Entirely depends on how much you value your money and whether or not you actually care about gaming.
Obviously if you don't play vidya, any effort you might undertake to make playing said vidya you don't even play better would be "too much work". You may also be perfectly satisfied with playing candy crush and fruit ninja on your phone, or maybe you're one of those 5,000+ hour League of Legends players that plays nothing but League of Legends (or TF2, or CS:GO, or DOTA 2). You have no interest in variety, so again, any effort you would have to undertake to give you unlimited free games that you aren't going to play would be "too much work".
But lets say you enjoy a wide variety of PC games, and the unlimited backlog of excellent games emulation provides. Either you spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on games, or you turn to piracy and get them for free, along with the rest of your media. Now, you will eventually have to switch to Windows 10 if you want to get the most out of modern gaming. Obviously the problem with this is if you pirate on Windows 10, you're going to find yourself the target of spamigation. But if you use my above solution and air gap your "gaming" machine, there is essentially zero risk involved, and you're saving thousands (tens of thousands depending on your media consumption rate) for a ~$300 PC on the side.

try not to take them so seriously.
if honest, then they're just confessing they haven't gone nearly as far as others before them. can't blame people, per se. it is alot of work to know more than a handful of OS variants (breadth) in the depths required to know where they fit best. because if you're good, the tool is just a tool – what you really know is a large section of the space, the surrounding ecology, and how to use both to implement production systems. consumers know none of this, though they type with the same keyboard ascii escape characters.
for what it's worth, ms/win has few 'holes' in the sense of old. rather, these days, they're all dnssec/cert based. solving these just requires network control – a wsus vm, a few scripts to change the lookup targets, and a protocol+app based firewall. so really, they're not holes at all (they behave quite differently); but the not as learned don't know just how much control they have, or how different the field has become.
and for what it's worth, windows will move towards an OS-as-a-Service subscription model. not today, maybe not tomorrow, but alot has been lined up already. impressive how the underlying code, certs, patches, and licenses are all just database entries underneath win6.2/win6.3 kernel. like a transactional/git OS. but i digress. point is: not a bad plan for the unables to abandon ship now.

by the way, in case it isn't clear enough, all of this is being driven by the windows update system. it did start out as 'hole' patches with win4, but then matured with service packs deprecation in win5 (too slow), finally breaking out into a wholly different universe by win6: a rapid release just-in-time binary 'slipstream' using O(n^nth) code dependency tracetrees. by the time win6.2 came around, the windows update subsystem had already become -the- os itself. the realities ms faced in the internet software environment finally 'forced' what countless anti-trusts never could: fully disentangled microsoft os services. all this became visible with win6srv (win server 2008), for any one paying attention. now inbetween win6.2/win6.3 was mso10/14, which pushed the -deploy- envelope even more (think office 365). the initial conception of that piece was already established: ms just took google chrome's model and applied it to all of mso. bringing it all back home, the windows update model was already on a parallel convergence of software evolution of sorts (just at a much, much grander scale), and the whole thing today seems obvious. hell, ms would be stupid not to do it. but to consider it still 'holes' and 'patches' is rather nuts today. still, the 'holes' mentality persists.
all this hopefully sheds light on why ms needs win10 kernel to take over. all those other hole/patch left over evolutionary dead-ends must be terribly expensive to keep around. braindrain and all making things even worse (civilization collapse affects ms too). with the way win10 kernel is now (and even win6.3, for that matter), ms is just cleaning up and biding its time. everything is truly already laid out. ms could have pulled the plug back in 2012…

just in case any of you plebs need proof of the gibberish i'm talking about:
(1) run something like windirstat or treesize on %windir%\winsxs (e.g. c:\windows\winsxs). there's all your rapid release just-in-time compilations, all in perfect b-tree categorical size chunks. that -is- your operating system now.
(2) yea, yea, i know. but muh %windir%\softwaredistribution and %windir%\installer! no. those are the staging ms-download and ms/non-ms msi pre-cursor patch hold overs. once a download goes there, the binary fragments get split off and indexed into all possible versions in %windir%\winsxs. you'll notice with win6.1 vs win6.3, the windows update process is orders of magnitude faster: it bypasses most of those code-cruft hold overs and goes straight for dependency traces in winsxs. large ms packages still are used in these directories (arcane apps/frameworks, like windows media, silverlight, dotnet, etc). once ms is done migrating out of these hold overs, all barriers will be gone.
(3) the transaction tracetree is %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataStore.edb. this is what you have to reset with dism when the store goes corrupt keeping track of O(n^nth) fucking dependencies (plebs uses this via the drive-cleanup util).
(4) the transaction log is %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. largely useless outside of distributed windows updates debug reporting information. aka what plebs call ms spying – as if ms gives a shit about the average user. yea, yea, tangential use for nsa, but largely not. most of the 'sensitive' tracing is via schedule tasks, which you can fucking disable and be done with most paranoia.
so like i said, most users are simply not aware of how much the game has so fundamentally changed. windows is literally lightyears different than it was before; more segregated and controllable than ever before. you just have to pay attention.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/3020460/microsoft-windows/banishing-get-windows-10-nagware-isnt-as-easy-as-you-think.html
In spite of what you've read, dodging Microsoft's 'Get Windows X' campaign takes more than two registry changes
It's important to realize that nobody has any idea how Microsoft will circumvent these protections in the future. What we do know is that Microsoft has wiggled around the stopgaps in the past – having new versions of KB 3035583 reset the AllowOSUpgrade value, for example – and it's clear that Microsoft has no fear of alienating diehard Windows 7 users. As Mayfield said this morning, "I'm still hearing from people who've had their Windows Update control panels hijacked, and Microsoft said they were gonna stop that nonsense months ago. Windows is a moving target, and Microsoft can and do change their policies/tactics at will."
As Mayfield says, "[GWX Control Panel is] based on both my first-hand experience and reports I've received from hundreds of users (most of whom are IT consultants and tech support professionals). The Windows 10 push is much bigger than what those Registry values cover. Period."

I know fuck all on this topic. After turning off updates, I had it do some last fall for the first time in at least a year. I had XP until then.
Time to learn linux I guess.

I have a win 7 Sept 09 edition with no updates at all, and I have 0 issues with anything. You can snag a iso of that from almost any torrent place, then use your original key so your all legit.
If you want basic Linux info
Fallow me on jewtube if ya want man. I'm doing silly ass basic shit with Linux from a Wintards pov. There are also other lovely people on there like: Tek Linux https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOWcZ6Wicl-1N34H0zZe38w

>win7 with literally zero updates
wew lad
I wouldn't trust that outside of a virtual machine. No updates means you don't get as much botnet, but it also means you miss out on legitimate security fixes. Did you notice how I said as much botnet? That's because Windows has had a backdoor called NSAkey since 98. The new spyware updates take screenshots every couple minutes and send them to M$, and it's probably true that you're not getting that. But you're still getting spied on, and now you're more vulnerable to viruses too because no updates.
Also you're hardware a shit. I rarely ever use more than 10% CPU, even when running a virtual machine that contains win7 with no updates.

Again, its the experience I have had with Linux. Hell even the puppy I found just recently works my system a bit hard, though not nearly as badly as some others (Mint).

Faggot, every Intel CPU has the Management Engine. It's only that on some models you are allowed to access some functions of it ("vPro"), and on others only Intel and NSA can.

You're probably mixing up RSA the algorithm and RSA the company. Two unrelated things.
The latter was hacked and accused of inserting government backdoors into their products a few times during recent years. The former is considered bulletproof by cryptologists.

Kali lite.
Mostly music playing in the bg.
Kali is a "penetration testing" os aimed at wifi cracking. I chose this because its not hard to install anything on it (making it advanced) and also (sense it is a pentesting OS) has a 80-85% chance my wifi card will work right off the bat (its loaded with TONS of proprietary wifi drivers).

I'll be making more but from HDD installs on my alt system.
Stop thinking Linux is hard. If I can do it, you can too!
