According to a new article written by Hotwheels, in November Jim (the guy who owns the servers this place runs on) demanded that 8chan switch to closed source code. If it didn't, he threatened - and I quote - to "unplug the 8chan servers". Hotwheels managed to talk him down but that's not the end of it it.
In January, after the failure of Infinity Next, it appears that Hotwheels finally aceeded to Jim's demands. He states

It seems that /intl/ ruse from a few months ago might have been correct after all, hope I'm wrong…

I've read both versions of the story, and substantial portions of the logs as well, and they make for interesting reading.
I'll say one thing: Hotwheels doesn't come out smelling like a rose, that's for sure. He's often duplicitous, yet in the logs he says, "i try to always tell the truth as closely as possible", despite having publicly admitted to trying to bluff Josh out of the source code, amid other examples.
I also don't think Josh deserves all the hate. Yeah, there were migration problems, but Hotwheels was still keen on using Infinity Next, and Josh managed to get a lot done.
The bottom line, though, is that ultimately Josh failed to completely deliver and Jim isn't going to have his paid 2ch staff work on Next if he can't keep his changes closed source.
