Idea was he just lonely and became a NEET that lost all his social skills. As soon as people start turning up he can't really start acting normal again because he kept trying to get the relationships with them to be perfect again so they'd like him because he was afraid of being alone again. Kinda makes the other characters seem more like psychopaths (except for the one woman costarring) since they didn't seem to care in the least about him having a mental breakdown.

In the second season of the show they try ramping up a bit more with trying to have the other characters get some focus on them being assholes too rather than just shitting on the one guy. The black guy in particular being shown to be a domineering jackass that seems set to go homicidal.
