Yes its night time, and its hard to tell.
basically the darker the smoke means its consuming the building's fire load(combustible materials) at a rate faster than the fire can efficiently burn thus creating waste byproduct(black smoke).
May vary with fire load composition. I.e. a factory full of wood chips is going to burn with a whiter smoke as opposed to a commercial building with lots of plastic furniture , which yields darker smot.
