This is the problem when talking about intelligence. Doesn't the scientific community say something along the lines of "it's hard to pinpoint what can be defined as intelligent and what causes a high level of intelligence".

It depends on what you value more, a person with a high level of common sense; who can adapt to most situations easily. Or do you want a person who knows a lot about things, but can't operate outside of their comfort zone. Who knows?

Anyway, at least Orange Pone isn't having a panic attack every episode or the occasional mental illness outburst.

Inventors are not necessarily the most cognatively gifted people. Usually, they just happen to be doing the right job at the right time. Twilight does a lot of research and experimentation, but it all within the realm of the theoretical. Case in point: the only thing she has ever invented has been a useless cutie mark switching spell, and she found that one half-done already.

Applejack is more practical, and she is motivated to relieve her heavy work load. Unfortunately for her, her disdain for anything new would make her an extremely unlikely inventor.

Do you know who would be a likely inventor? Apple Bloom. Sure, she is as dumb as a ball-peen hammer, but she is profoundly open to new ideas. Even beyond her insane cutie mark quest, Apple Bloom is ready and eager to try different things contrary to established wisdom. She also has the advantage of necessity. Soon she will be doing the same work that Applejack does, but unlike Applejack Apple Bloom will be looking for new ways to get it done. Of course, most of her ideas will end in catastrophy, as they always seem to, but eventually she will probably stumble onto something that works.

Private colleges are businesses. Any time a business is involved in anything it will aim to make money above all else. The only way to stop it is to make all colleges entirely publically funded.

In any case, I did not buy my way in. I just had to trade four years of my life for my funding.

>I don't see what your problem is with tests though.

Test-taking is a skill as much as it is proof of retention. For example, on my enterance exam I tested through subjects that I have never studied. Anything multiple choice can be faked through, and half the time good test-takers do not realize how they are doing it.

On the other hand, people without the aptitude or experience for test-taking will test poorly, even when they have an understanding of the subject matter. Experience with testing is as important as it is with any skill. Thus, people who have not been acedemically tested repeatedly will always be at a disadvantage. That is who so many students who spend their early acedemic careers in the shitty baby-sitting services they call schools now frequently test so poorly.

Standardized tests give a false evaluation of students' respective knowledge. Experienced students like me always have a leg up on the system, while inexperienced students with equal or greater potential get held back. Worst of all, students who get held back have to pay a lot more money.

One is the possibly the single most skilled magic user alive, being chosen over Celestia and Luna as the one who should wield the sum total of princess magic in equestria against Tirek.

One is a successful business owner, fashion designer, martial artist, prospector, leader of a singing troupe, costume seamstress and on top of all that, she some how also manages to stay on top of the local gossip, national gossip AND hang out with her friends every day (so she likely also has supernatural time managing skills) and visit the local spa religiously.

One is… Ehm… Pinkie pie?

One is a dumb jock who at least knows her limits, so she usually avoids getting into too much trouble inspite of her lack of education and general cognitive capabilities.

One can speak to animals due to a magical talent and thats pretty much it.

And the last one can barely manage to keep the family farm from foreclosing, inspite of having ample free workforce, regular volunteers who also help for free, a monopoly on the local markets for most of their wares with a high demand to boot and she considers simple addition to be some kind of convoluted insult.

And she was also dumb enough to go to a catered high society party to sell carnie junkfood.

And worst of all, she's so arrogant and self-righteous she has no clue what her own limits are, blindly assuming she is the best and everything and that anything she doesn't already know isn't worth knowing. And she takes pride in this…

Even her inbred brother/father who can barely even string together coherent sentences, has said smarter things that she ever will.

It is kind of difficult to defend Applejack's intelligence. She seems to have practical sense, at least in regards to things other that business. At least she is not prone to acts of reckless idiocy like the other five are.

Still, how the hell does she manage to poor while being the biggest land owner in town with no fewer than two monopolies (cider, zap apples)? Is it because she lets Fluttershy turn half her orchard into a fucking bat reserve? Is it because she sells her produce out of a cart in the market?

I mean, contrast that with Rarity who sells clothes in a giant nudist colony. She lives in silk and jewelry, owned her own place as a child, has an obscenely expensive collection of beauty supples, and at least weekly gets expensive spa treatments (probably treating NEET Fluttershy as well). It makes absolutely no sense for Rarity's little boutique to so wildly out-produce Applejack's vast orchards and farms unless Applejack is doing something monumentally wrong.

It makes me wonder what would happen to Sweet Apple Acres if Rarity were to take over the books.

The characters all show varying levels of intelligence at different times on the basis that they can't be any smarter than the writer writing the episode. I can't give IQ levels, but I would say that most of them are average, including twilight.

Here's my order anyways

>Pinkie Pie

You would think that she would be lower wouldn't you? But when she's not being absolutely silly for comedic effect, she usually is pretty on the ball. When she seriously answers a question it usually comes out as "didn't everybody know that?"

>Applejack/Rarity

I'd have to tie these two, they're very different in their own rights, but both of them seem to have the know how to solve new problems that they haven't encountered before with their unique set of skills.

>Twilight

You'd think she'd be on top, but she constantly shows that she cannot think outside of a book to solve problems. She constantly doubts herself when she is not educated on a topic. She's a very good book learner, but generally solves problems by finding someone else's method than developing her own.

>Rainbow Dash

She's often headstrong and overconfident. She solves problems with nothing but her physical prowess rather than by any thought.

>Fluttershy

Unfortunately, I'm forced to rank her last. Of all her episodes, she never really comes across any problem other than "be more assertive" She's overly timid, and I would peg that on instinct controlling her actions rather than her own thoughts. She's thinks with her feelings.

Her parents are still alive.

Assuming you meant that her parents bought the boutique for her while she was still a child, that would make sense except for the fact that Rarity would have to already be doing something to make them think that she needed her own place. God knows that no parents would ever encourage their children to have their own place away from parental supervision without some extraordinary reason. Even if they did buy the boutique for Rarity, she must have already been making money as a seamstress which is nothing short of amazing.

Farms focused on simple commodities tend to turn a tiny profit, but Sweet Apple Acres is primarily an orchard. Orchards make mad bank, that is when there are no huge agribusinesses around to run them into the ground. Not only that, it is the oldest and largest property in the area. It should have been optimised for profit decades ago. It even has exclusive retail distribution deals. The Apples should be rolling in the dough.

The funny thing about Rarity's parents is the bizarre Wisconsin accent. They do not sound like old money, and they dress like white trash with the Hawaiian shirt and stretch pants. Rarity may put on airs like she is high born, but her parents and Sweetie Belle put the lie to that notion.

Still, it would make sense that Rarity's parents somehow purchased Carousel Boutique for her. How else would she have gotten it? Still, her parents would have had no reason discernable to buy it for her. That is, unless she has been making ensembles for the Gala for quite a bit longer than she let on in "Ticket Master." Rarity would have to have been a rare prodigy either way. I am now imagining Rarity's mother as a Wisconsonian Leopold Mozart don'cha know and Rarity as young Wolfgang.

Only explanation is that AJ is a terrible business mare who keeps fucking up her finances and has no clue how to make bits.

Its almost like she has next to no formal education or something…

Rarity rarely sees customers come into her shop, but she has often mentioned getting orders from out of town. Either special orders from the like of Sapphire Shores, bulk orders the like of Hoity Toity who had a chain of stores or costume design work from that musical in Manehattan.

Even if she has few local customers on account of selling clothes in a nudist colony, its clear is is raking in bits on her design work, as a self made mare putting on the airs of being high born as part of her business and for social climbing purposes.

As far as old money goes? That Filthy Rich. As old as money gets in ponyville at any rate, which is only 1-2 generations old.

Rarity's parents seem as down to earth as you can get without digging a hole. Most likely explanation is that they used to live in Carousel Boutiqe but Rarity took it over when her business took off and she bought them another home with money from the design business.

When comparing the two, I just don't see how anyone would rate the financial failure as being smarter than the successful high fashion designer, who's doing so well some of the biggest names in equestrian fashion are seeking her out in spite of her living out in the sticks.

The Apple Family's situation certainly deserves some deeper explanation than we are ever likely to get, but here's a theory..

**Maybe Big Mac keeps another set of books because he doesn't trust his sister with the family finances.

Maybe she used to have a colt friend that stole a significant amount from them.

Maybe the depression and damage that incident did to Applejack is what led to her incestuous relationship with her brother. She needed comfort.

But he still doesn't trust her with money and lets her think they are living on the brink as a form of punishment.

And she still doesn't trust stallions that aren't kin**

Rarity's Mid-Atlantic accent is one that does not occur in nature. It can only be learned and affected. IRL it was used by stage performers and taught in some American finishing schools, which may be a clue as to why Rarity has that accent.

We know that Rarity attended the regular Ponyville public school, since we saw her doing as much in "Cutie Mark Chronicles." That does not, however, preclude her having attended a finishing school later. If her parents do indeed have money, which only makes sense, that would have been a desirable option especially when taking Young Rarity's predilection for style into account.

Lending credence to that theory is Sweetie Belle. If Rarity's parents had been as eager to dump Young Rarity off on someone else as they are with Sweetie Belle, a finishing school would be practical and relatively responsible. That would also explain why Sweetie Belle speaks with that West Coast accent that seems to be common in Ponyville–she has not been to a finishing school.

Yeah, what is with Applejack's seeming lack of an education? She grew up in the same town as Rarity and Cheerilee. It would only make sense that they all attended the same school. Did Applejack have to drop out to help on the farm when her parents died?

That… makes a ton of sense.

Bigger the farm is, the bigger the costs.

Besides, we see the damn place getting attacked by fruit bats, parasprites, eggplant monsters, dragons, timber wolves, cows, Rainbow Dash, and Celestia knows what else in MLP's fucked up near D&D setting. Fixing all that shit up every time adds up.

AND we can't forget the heavily implied PARENTS ARE DEAAAAD, which probably means Big Mac and Applejack have been the only able-bodied ponies on the farm for years, with Granny Smith too frail to do many tasks.

I always just figured it was a result of Rarity trying to sound posh, since her entire thing is being a self-made pony who desperately wants to become a part of high society. Or just a family thing, her parents also have weird regional American accents. Makes me wonder what Sweetie Belle will grow up sounding like.

What exactly are the costs of running a farm without heavy machinery, GMOs, or haber-bosch fertilizer? They would need a constant supply of steel tools (eg. Big Mac's saggy old plow). They would need wood, which they may or may not be able to get from the nearby forests. They would need water rights, assuming they do not straight up own them since their ancestors were the first homesteaders. If they have any sense, hired labor would be another expense, although we never see non-Apples working the farm.

Your idea that constant disasters keep Sweet Apple Acres from turning a huge profit makes as much sense as anything that I can think of. Crops and buildings get destroyed all the time in the show, and it only makes sense that would carve a massive chunk out of the Apples' profits. They need to, like, hire some samurai or something for protection.

Maybe the farm is just too big for her and Big Mac to work it effectively and she's too "stubborn and proud" (as in, too dumb to ask for help)

Her willingness to set apart large chunks of it for fruitbats makes sense in that context. She has just never mentioned any such problems, and it would make sense for them to hire extra help if it was the case. They wouldn't even need someone from outside the appleclan for that. Someone like braeburn or other such members of the clan would love to come and help them out. However, we just don't see hired workers on the farm.

AJ dropping out of school to work the farm as >>161812 suggested also makes a lot of sense.

I don't buy the disasters theory though. Those hit ponyville and Rarity's boutique about as often as the farm gets hit, yet the farm seems far worse off economically than the rest of the town. Why do they hurt worse than the boutiqe when it gets demolished by yaks and her entire inventory and supply of materials get demolished, as compared to the apples need a new barn due to pinkie pie happening while they where rebuilding the old one after it had been rainbow dashed?

Besides, such things aren't new. The farm has always been sitting right next to the big forest of nightmarish pony eating horrors. Surely the family has learned how to keep manticores off their land in the 2-3 generations they have lived there.

Oh, and to the point of Rarity's accent being a professional affectation, even if her thespian Mid-Atlantic accent does sound more posh than that of the average Ponyvillian, why would she choose to speak with that one instead of the accent that upper class Canterlotians like Jet Set, Upper Crust, Fleur De Lis, Hoity Toity, and the rest use? If she is going to play at being from Canterlot, why try to sound like an actress? Maybe she is aiming for "nouveau riche" instead of "old money," but then Filthy Rich, who actually is Ponyvillian new money, speaks with a Southwestern accent almost like Cal Worthington.
