Anyone else noticing how these episode plots are written against the ponies?

Every plot ends up being about one of the characters fucking up something because of their own fault over some shallow problem which not even Worrying McGeek or Peter Griffin would ever be bothered by.

Luna? There would be no problem if she wasn't bothered by Nightmare Moon.

Discord? Again no problem if he wasn't bothered by Fluttershy not inviting him as his partner to the gala.

Twilight? No problem if she wasn't bothered by Moondancer.

Every character feels like Spike the dragon.

it's usually about overcoming character flaws, be their own and/or others'.

perhaps the problem is these episodes aren't as sympathetic and introspective as earlier episodes, like putting your hoof down and party of one.

All good characters have flaws, and part of their development is overcoming these flaws.

Go back to DBZ.

Could be. Could also just be nostalgia mixed with overall discontent of recent seasons, where it's easy to blame either the show or the audience.

I thought Amending Fences was well paced and enjoyable, and that resolution was feelstastic. The Luna episode was similar enjoyable, but had a more hurried pace to it that reminds me more of the general state of the show.

This could just be my nostalgic bias talking, since Amending Fences goes all the way back to S1E1, but it seems like whenever there's a Mane 6 episode, its hit and miss. I think its because of the pacing. The premiere was great, and Castle Sweet Castle was pretty good, but any other time they're all in one place, it's different, seemingly more fast-paced. It's not like Dragonshy, for some reason.

I still need to rewatch the Yaks episode. Of the parts I've seen, it feels more like a later MLP episode than one of the early ones. I think it's mostly because of Twilight, honestly, and how her kingdom and princesshood frames the show now.

Ever wondered why there's no such thing as a good Superman movie? Because he's an all powerful deity with no personal issues to work out. It's just 90 minutes of investigating shit that the casual viewer figured out immedietly, followed by a dissatisfying climax.

No character can be interesting without obstacles to overcome, be they physical weaknesses or internal flaws.

i get where you're coming from, with all the obligatory flanderised dialogue input in shared scenes if flanderise means what i think it means

but some eps get it right, like testing testing 123, ticket master, hearth's warming eve and cutie mark chronicles.

>and dragonshy

yup. and Friendship Is Magic - Part 1, and maybe magical mystery cure

i like the show for the character chemistry, and i think those episodes go from one character, or pairing, to the next.

so i suppose sometimes when you throw all 6 into the beaker all you get is a flashbang murky final solution, instead of funny little pairing dynamics (twixpp, rdxfs, rarity x celestia or twilight and shy bathing animals)

Hmm. I don't feel that great about Testing, and it's not because of the pacing. I agree that the pacing in that episode is fine, but having all the characters in there felt like a waste. That, and people tend to point to that episode as an example of pegasus Twilight done right, while I think the episode's basic message could've been achieved without her.

For example, I think it could've worked just as well, if not better, if you replaced Princess Twilight with Fluttershy, and then just relegate Twilight to a side character for the episode. The reason I would rework Testing this way other than because I don't like alicorn Twilight is because it still maintains Twilight's geeky side of her personality,

>muh books

>muh learning

>muh flash cards

but it doesn't focus on it as a showcase of her entire personality, which just made her seem a little more annoying than endearing. I'm not saying she didn't have good moments in the episode, or didn't make it enjoyable to watch. I'm saying she wasn't necessary even as a unicorn though she would've been much cuter.

Plus, this would've been a nice opportunity to show that while Fluttershy didn't fly so good well at flight camp, she did do well in history class, which would make her a little more invested in helping her best friend from flight camp pass this big test.

This is all leaving aside the fact that Rainbow Dash's "Wonderbolt's arc" is a staggered and drawn-out mess of episodes sprinkled throughout each season, but that's another problem entirely. As for the other characters–Spike, Rarity, Applejack, Pinkie Pie–I like how they contributed to the conclusion of the episode, but they still just felt like filler.

One thing about Testing is that it is just like The Ticket Master, except the focus is on two characters instead of just one. I loved Ticket Master, it was some funny shit, although they could've done better with the Yakety Sax parody. Also it's always weird to see that Brady Bunch scene where Fluttershy's getting mad, even though she's supposed to be the demure one.

Hearth's Warming Eve was pretty good, I liked it, but not what I'd consider a great episode. I dunno, the way that the antagonists were written just seemed too dumb and annoying to me. Like they're willfully angry and belligerent without any reason besides "I'm better and fuck you." I know it's because of the winter, and each tribe felt like it was being mistreated by the other, but I guess it felt a little too comical.

Magical Mystery Cure's bodyswap act was fine actually, but not the mechanic or reasoning behind the destiny-changing spell and what eventually resulted from solving that.

>having all the characters in there (testingtestin123) felt like a waste

entertainment value is never a waste (twi tutor rage, fs' +spike stage play, pp rap, rarity's fashion pov, aj shitting on rarity + aj dun need no education)

if anything felt like a waste, it was spike's out-of-nowhere apology at the end of pinkie pride shits me every rewatching

>nerdy fs > nerdy ptwi

eh. i don't see it.

>fs didn't entirely suck at flight camp

fs' past is an interesting mystery yet be unraveled, mite b interesting for both fsxrd + backstory.

but i still think twilight stands center when it comes to education matters, like twilight time.

>filler

entertaining filler. each of the m6 also added to the education lesson that "people learn differently", with their own unique methods. i'd say this would trump a fs x rd episode, or having twi in the backseat.

>>159571

>yakety sax parody

i think this is an american joke or something because i never like it anywhere

>angryshy

happens more often lately, but i guess it was a missed joke where she could've been the only one not angry

>pointless arguing and pony supremacy in hearth's warming

might've been the point. i guess there could be some better reason behind those attitudes, or a better attitude from all sides, but i think it encompassed both inner-clan and inter-clan conflict while preparing for the cathartic 'friendship wins' ending.

>too comical

and nothing more novel to many history lessons

>entertainment value is never a waste

Too many cooks.

>nerdy fs > nerdy twi

She doesn't have to be nerdy to be intelligent. Look at Tanks for the Memories

>but i still think twilight stands center when it comes to education matters

I think this episode was overenthusiastic about that. It was like they're trying to remind me that Twilight is smart and loves education, but in a memey stereotyped kind of way. It's not only annoying, but I feel it defeats the purpose the character's served in the past: to inspire her love and pride of learning in her friends. I think it's more interesting, and potentially more entertaining to see that rub off a little.

I liked the comedic bits in Hearth's Warming where the tribes were amongst themselves. It's when they clashed that I found it kinda lacking.

Anyways, I wasn't arguing for Twi to be removed from the episode. She can still be nerdy and try to help Rainbow Dash study.

Honestly it beats 'BigBadMcEvilGuy is going to destroy the world!' every single episode. Having episodes actually be personal and involve the flaws and mistakes of characters is a lot more interesting.

Besides, Discord is supposed to be incredibly immature and capricious to go with his near-infinite power, it's what makes him fear more threatening than mere malice but a lot more flexible than a generic doomsday villain.

You know a direction I wish the show could take? A war between Yakyakistan and The Griffon Kingdom with Equestria caught in the middle.

Have the writers get to work on that right after a Star Trek DS9 marathon. Maybe the essence of actual story arcs will rob off.

I could see it now… Griffon terrorists setting fire to parts of the Everfree in angry retaliation of Equestria wishing to remain neutral, displacing packs of Timberwolves… and worse.

Yaks commandeering supplies and food leaving the Crystal Empire starving.

Pony mercenaries who steal dragon hordes for the gems they need to power their battle magic causing angry dragons to attack pony villages and settlements.

A great famine in Zebraland resulting in droves of refugees seeking asylum in Ponyville.

The true purpose of the Rockfarm revealed as Equestria has no choice but to ramp up its defenses.

And to make matters even worse, changeling spies have been discovered.

Too bad that's not what we will get.

4654fa No.161648

So basically, the characters are (or at least used to be) flawed?

9d109b No.161678

>>161619

Holy fuck, no. This is just conflict for it's own sake. What's the appeal?

Also I can't get over how stupid Yakyakistan sounds. I feel like I should slit my own throat if I say it.
