Far left Twi was probably about $150 with all her winter wrap up accessories. It wasn't bad considering I got her July 2012, before there was anything other than spaghetti manes if even those. Considering that's shes still around after over 2 and half years
of sleeping with her without having popped a single stitch, I would say money well spent. I just wish she had embroidery, but that wasn't an option until basically a week after I received her.
Ridiculous Happy Twi was… expensive (think around half a grand). She's sorta a steal all things considered. Each of this artist's plushes are basically one of a kind, I don't believe she even uses a sewing machine to make them. I can only imagine the time spent. Was surprised it was only me and one other guy bidding, and there was no bid war. Real work of art, really love it.
Chinese Twalot was 35 on Amazon
The 4DE's are $25 a piece, and I don't remember what the Derpy cost, but it wasn't expensive.

If where you live has a reasonably good postal system or good shipping companies, you should be able to receive a larger plush. If I find any other plush makers that are closer, I'll post it.

The "grain" is the direction the fur naturally is. For example, most of the fur appears to point downwards, like fur on a real animal would. Even with matted fur you should be able to tell the general direction. You basically want to brush against it, then with it, repeating several times until it appears and feels fluffy.

Hand and machine washing could be an option on a plush that size. I'm often told I speak heresy, but seeing as I've done it many times, it does work. Dry cleaning is also an option, and probably would be easier (although more expensive). I have no idea to test what's dry clean safe and isn't, but most of the Frontwinner Chinese plush's are made almost exactly the same as the 4de ones.
And it's gross, but eh, the more you understand why your plush is dirty, the better armed you are to fix the problem.

That's a good question… Soaking is a no because it would never dry, washer can't be used because both the plush the washer would be wrecked, and I have no idea about dry cleaning.
I guess you just clean using soap, water and a rag on the surface, trying to keep the plush as dry as possible.

Never done it before. Neither had this anon when he started. He drafted the pattern for her and learned to sew by making the prototypes.
From what I hear, sewing isn't hard but it's extremely tedious. My fabric should arrive today within the next few hours, so I'll be able to find that out for myself here pretty soon. I already know how to work my machine so I think it's just a matter of figuring out how the fabric behaves and how to work with it before I can start making a first prototype.

I plan to post more detailed progress here since half chan doesn't usually have consistency with their plush thread.
To start off, I have 2 older model sewing machines, a straight stitch model ( Montgomery Ward URR 188, a rebranded Japanese clone of the Singer 15-91), and a fancier Singer 503a (what I plan to do the applique stitching with). Ordered some "cheap" minky in 2 colors to start off with making prototypes.
I've also been checking tutorials. Was suggested to check out the ones by Adam L Humphrey's, they seem to be detailed overall. There's also a few good Deviant art tutorials covering various aspects of plush making like stitches, etc. For the first day or two I'll probably be just messing with the fabric, doing hand and machine stitches, etc. Eventually I'll start making an approximately half size version.
When all is said and done I should have a ~3ft tall purple smart and if I can actually get the hang of this, should have it look something like I posted.

Got my first item sewn, a little football with the stripes. Spent maybe 4 hours on it total. Had some issues with sewing it, some being my own fault, some being the machine. Probably would have come out a lot better if I hadn't royally fucked up a few times, like sewing the 4 pieces right on top of each other on the last seam or not noticing the thread fell off the pickup hook and caused nothing to sew. Sewing machine speed is also a bit of an issue, it's either fast or dead stop
Probably will start on a prototype pony tomorrow, maybe 15 inches tall.

Probably have spent about 10-15 hours on it so far. Made a LOT of mistakes, and learned a shitload of stuff (like machines are nice, but hand sewing makes a better result).

It's a video series, and it's only part of what I used, but it's pretty helpful. I recommend using more hand sewing than he does though. Back stitch in particular on tight curves. He's a lot more experienced with the machine, so he can figure out how to use it in tight areas.

So after a night of feels I got back to plushing.
Managed to cut out my prototype and get a second shot at applique on a piece I wrecked.
There are so many damn pieces. I still have to cut a horn and eventually cut out a basic tail and mane. Fucking hell this is a lot of work, it's no wonder plush makers charge hundreds for large ones.
If this wasn't a waifu plush I wouldn't even bother because of the amount of work involved.

So as of now I made the ears and the wings for the 20 inch prototype. Still waiting until I can pick up my other sewing machine so I can get the damn applique work done on the cutie mark and eyes. Then I can finally sew the body. Additionally I ordered the fabric for the final 36 inch version. I'm hoping I can get the applique down well enough and finish the prototype so that I can start cutting the fabric on the 36" version within a week or so.
Last picture is what the final plush should look like from the front. I think I might use less pressure on the mouth though, and go with a black thread. There's also a possibility I will change the eyes slightly, but not sure yet. Horn will be less thick and the ears less pillow-like.

Progress has been slow lately. Had been waiting on getting that sewing machine mentioned. I did get it, and it had the right parts installed, except for it was missing the bobbin case. So after searching the attic for the box I gave up and ordered it online. It won't arrive until Monday. Oiled the machine and ordered some grease for the gears.

The body pattern for the 15 inch version fits in the rear leg of the 36" version and the 21 inch version doesn't seem much bigger. Kinda mind blowing. Her head pattern is taller than those Chinese ponies posted at the top.

So it's been a while since I updated. I've since cut fabric, made eyes, and stitched the head together.
I think I've spent about 12 hours on the eyes (6 cutting and placing, 6 sewing), maybe a few hours tracing and cutting the pattern, and a few hours stitching.
Probably have about 18 hours just straight up so far in making this plush, not including practice or research.
