How will Lucas be remembered when he's six feet underground? As a talentless hack who eventually ruined everything he ever created, or as the visionary rebel director he was once known as?

I want to believe that he will be remembered for the good moreso than the bad. Sure he was making stinkers (Howard the Duck) even at the height of his career, but I think the combined legacy of Star Wars, American Graffiti and Willow are enough to redeem him.

His greatest contribution to film will always be his insistence on using, often popularizing, the cutting edge of special effects, from his fierce defense of practical effects in the 70s/80s to his groundbreaking use of CGI. And while the poor aging of computer graphics makes it easy to dismiss the prequels as "all CGI," and worse off for it, people forget that the prequels had lots of cool-ass expensive practical sets/effects of their own.

He wasn't the director, he was only the producer. His role with that movie was limited.

the prequels had stories, they weren't the greatest things on earth but had more going on than transformers or avatar. those films were literally made for special effects with joke plots/dialogue and nothing else.

I can't say I agree with the semi common allegation that GL "used a story to tell special effects" with the prequels, that's stretching it, but it's undeniable that their stories are much, much weaker than those of the original trilogy. The OT captured a lot of people's imaginations with its exotic alien planets, intergalactic political drama, and shades of an ancient monastic order of warriors, but all of this stuff took a backseat to what was at its heart a very simplistic - and not at all new - story about a group of loveable, relateable underdogs struggling against a greater malevolent force.

Basically, the lore and the worldbuilding - the setting - was window dressing for the plot.

When the prequels came around, unfortunately, the opposite happened. We got to see a bunch of things we already knew about from the OT actually happen - the Clone Wars, life in the Republic with the Jedi as a police force, Anakin's fall from grace - and while there were some neat revelations in there for fans, it wasn't anything we couldn't have just filled in the blanks on ourselves in our personal headcanons. While it was neat to see the world of the Republic fleshed out and meet the Jedi Council, there was no real relateable story - no consistent arc, no protagonists, no underdogs - behind this lore / setting / windowdressing.

That's my beef with the prequels, they missed the point of Star Wars. The OT was about human characters and their interactions with one another, with a cool and well-thought out sci fi setting as a backdrop. The prequels showed us more of the setting including some things we hadn't seen before, but their stories felt as though they were just checklisted off of a list of things that had to be shown to lead in to the original trilogy. Nothing was done to make this story empathetic or relatable.

this is the simple jist of the thread: Things you'd like to see, or things that you think would improve Star Wars.

I'll start.
- Better scaling.
You can't even take a Pluto-sized planet with the largest army seen in Star Wars. Let alone fight an entire galactic war.
I also want to see the planets be as huge and awesome as the real deal.
The idea of a"huge" ship, descending through the atmosphere is a wide shot that makes the ship dwarf compared to the size of the planet.

-Less Jedi.
As cool as the jedi are, they were always considered "Rare", and a million Jedi, spread over a galaxy spanning a few thousand planets, each with a population similar to earth would make them more rare than you'd think.

- More inhospitable planets.
Explore some of the planets that are not suitable for life. Barren planets, get some feeling of isolation in there.

I'm quite wellversed in the EU, but that's not really the point, now is it?
In terms of scale, the EU only adds divesity, but not actual scale within the universe. It still only takes a few dozen ships to conquer a planet…
The one bit of scaling I agree with the battle for Jabiim in SW-TCW comics by Dark Horse.
The scaling did improve in Legacy, though.

And in terms of JJ Abrams working on Cloverfield as a story concept creator and producer, he still had influence in the scaling of the movie as a producer.
My point still stands though; JJ Abrams doesn't scale well.
Directors/producers that do scaling well are for example Ridley Scott, Peter Jackson or Wolfgang Petersen.
Example of good scaling: The scene where the Prometheus enters the atmosphere of the planet.
The panning out scene from Orthanc in the Lord of the Rings, right before Saruman's speech.
or the large panning shot of all the ships landing on the beaches of Troy in the movie Troy.

abrams' problem with the trek reboots is that no matter how big you think the enterprise is, there's always a bigger ship.

it's like the guy who thinks he has a big dick until he sees one that's bigger and then goes home sad

>>1442

the empire is no longer the controlling political power for the galaxy is what the SE ending did. you have to remember that there was the entire fleet of star destroyers waiting for palpatine's signal to destroy the rebellion, which never came due to his untimely death. they wouldn't just disband and go back to ordinary civilian lifestyles.

speaking of that, wouldn't it be cool if someone made a film like inglourious basterds but in star wars?

I sure hope so. I'm happy that OP pointed this issue out as well. The EU managed to redeem the Jedi Order and turn the Republic into a cool / interesting setting, but one of the major flaws of the prequels was that there were just too many damn Jedi. It wasn't an underdog story anymore.

I've been running a d20 star wars sandbox game for several months. The game is set 9/8.5 Years BBY , and I was wondering if I could seek your all's advice.

The party boils down to a scoundrel whos attempting to go down the crime lord path and use droids primiarly to run a secret piracy/ illicit spice ring. The primary pilot is an ex imperial officer who was more or less forced to take the blame from a superior about smuggling spice using imperial equipment. His goal is to set up a security fleet so that he can eventually go pirate hunting. Finally we had (hes since held off on his character being used) an ex imperial bureaucrat (involved in previous characters downfall)who is basically a bad con man. Forges identities and literally is in life for money and money alone. Now of days hes attempting to manage the "fleet" of trade ships they are managing with their combined wealth.

What sorts of interesting encounters should I throw at them. What kinks can I throw in their plans?

The pirate captain that the scoundrel hired is being paid 500 credits/day +10% until they start piracy and then 1000/day +10% when they start piracy.

I'm looking for a good ruleset/ way to impliment implants, gene mods (since in cannon they in theory should exist).

Also I was wondering what /tg/ knew any links to do good economy discussion pages for star wars such as how much an average laborer/ (other professions) earn per day.

My pcs have taken an approach of legitimate business and illigetimate business and are about to expand to a rather large degree…. or try really.

Otherwise If you want dump scifi/ Starwars pics.

They've been manually trading via actually being with their ships which is the "safest" option however now they've amassed a rather large group fund. So i'm hoping that they will set up trade routes and actually go adventure.

I'm planning on putting up a few rumors of a old dreadnaught (or a smaller frigate of some sort) lost in space somewhere in the wild regions. Little do they know that its actually infested with "something". Probably pull a bit of dead space or zombies. Either way really large dungeon that if they bother to clear has a potential for reward…. if they bother to actually rework it.

The one attempting to do piracy we actually pulled the rules for droid creation out of saga (which the pricing is pretty solid). However he is taking to crafting his own using extremely expensive crafting droids. The inherit issue at the moment is that the "light infantry droids" that he is fielding are more like commandos and are multipurpose. However combined with a high price tag and a pretty decent lv they are extremly powerful.

At the moment hes wanting to use them to attempt to do some raiding on tattoine between tuskens and some small time crime lords. He has mentioned some on Hunting a kyrat Dragon and or attempting to at least come to an understanding with the tuskens.

I have been actually. The forger who has kind of fallen off the map and kind of quit. Had a bounty on him I think the others may have to deal with him as his Npc/character is chilling with the fleet doing business stuff.

Other than that unfortunately they've been really careful about the things they've done and left little to no proof/ trace of their existence.

Best i've got is that the scoundrel may have a bounty on his head/ an assasian coming after him to stop him before he gets rolling.

Word may fall through the grapevine that he has used various contacts to buy large amounts of goods. In conjunction with certain dissapearances someone may think to talk to his contact and pry info out of him.

His contact doesn't know that hes setting up a piracy thing but enough clues are there that they may (though very unlikely) decide to take him out of the equation. Its just problematic to think of a proper enemy to go after him likely one of the minor crime lords hes fucking over.

 No.1387

Update from campaign. The droids and the wookie spend the first week gearing up and being created mainting and inventory of the hidden facility.

The next week consists of the droids and the wookie scouring the local area for tusken raider tribes to try and make contact and getting ambushed or ambushing 4 different encounters. On the fourth one they manage to take the tuskens alive and attempt to talk to them via the Droids. The tuskens won't dine with them/ talk to them without the small "tribe" ( droids/wookie) passing the a warriors rite which is hunting and killing Krayt dragon.

The next several days they hunt down one and find a younger adult and kill it. It drops 4 Krayt dragon pearls and they then go back to the tuskens brining food and exchange gifts/ talk to them. It turns out that they have angered the other 3 tribes in the area but they manage to get a non agression pact out of the one tribe.

The Pc now wants to make peace with the other 3 tribes and make a mutal defensive pact while trading food/water/ tech with the tusken raiders in exchange for information/water/ help/peace. The pc has hinted towards wanting to eventually teach the tuskens/ try to unite them under him for when he wants to set up a base on another planet in the unkown regions.

Currently the obstacles that seem to exist are selling the pearls and getting income. What do you all think should happen? I'm pretty sure a minor crime lord would see the pearls being sold on the market as an easy score but anything else?

A robber who wore a Darth Vader costume during a bank robbery is wanted by police in North Carolina.

The dark side of the force lured the man to a credit union in the town of Pineville on Monday morning.

He wore a ‘Darth Vader style costume’ during the robbery and fled before police were called to the scene.

The Sith Lord pretender pointed a long gun at a member of staff while demanding money.

He escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash in a four-door grey Chevrolet Suburban, police say.

The suspect, who witnesses describe as a 5ft 5in black male, was caught on CCTV leaving the bank with wads of cash.

No one inside the bank was injured, according to reports.

So, why was C3PO's mind wiped but not R2-D2's? Did they trust Artoo not to blab any secrets because he isn't capable of speaking English?

Or did they just hate Threepio and want to fuck with him?

I think Obi called R2 his old friend. But can't remember.

Just for clarification, C3PO learns that Padme had the kids before dying, and 3PO leans over to R2 ecstatic about getting to tell Leia about her parents, which prompts Bail to have his mind wiped.

In the E3 novelization.

I know astromech droids supposedly get quirky and independent when they don't get memory wiped, but Bail clearly says to have the protocol droid wiped. There may be some technical reason but the real reason is to explain why 3PO never said anything about Anakin in the original trilogy.

Thank you. I need to read the novelizations, I hear they sometimes have cool shit in them. All I've read is Ep IV's.
