Have you played TLCM? And the extra planet mod? If you're not playing KotOR II on PC modded to shit, (1080 hack, widescreen hack, minimap fix, better soundpacks, better skyboxes, higher res textures, etc.) you're not doing it right.

I'm re-reading the Thrawn Trilogy (haven't read them in about 8 years). Let's discuss them.

Interesting note: All references to Vader and others are "Dark Jedi" and not sith. When exactly did the word Sith enter the vocabulary? I know games like Jedi Knight had the word Sith (Mysteries of the Sith), so it emerged somewhere in the mid 90s.

Actually, in the Star Wars Rebels concept art, there are renderings of Agent Kallus as a Chiss instead of a Human…perhaps a knowing nod to Thrawn, I don't know…but who knows what will happen down the line…I mean the Inquisitors are confirmed, and another throwback to the EU

The concept of the Sith- as others have noted- has been around almost since the beginning, but, iirc, they weren't fleshed out as a specific entity until the Tales of the Jedi comics of the mid-90s, and even that depiction is pretty far from what they would become in later titles.

I am not the most well-versed in the EU. Can someone explain the rationale behind the Sith Rule of Two to me? Seems kind of counterintuitive to cripple your numbers when your goal is to overthrow the massive and supremely powerful police force of the galaxy.

I will concede that there is a certain elegance to the provision that a Sith must be constantly prepared to kill his Apprentice/Master, and alert that the reverse may happen, such that only the strongest, smartest and most brutal Sith can live to spread his teachings. Very fitting for an order which gets their power to use the Force from hate.

pretty much this, being a smaller order makes their numbers much easier to conceal. this is why darth krayt was a moron for creating the rule of one, it essentially brought back the brotherhood of darkness and everyone started killing each other again.

That's probably closer to what McQuarrie envisioned, too.

The problem with culling things from cut material from the old films is that, for better or for worse, those things were cut for a reason, and reinserting them into the new Star Wars paradigm means changing them to work with things they were never intended to work with. Sure R2 was originally meant to balance on a ball, but had that design gone through, he wouldn't have been the same little astromech droid we learned to know. Now BB-8 exists and by necessity he's a little of both. R2's head on top of a ball, which just looks like a silly parody of both designs.

I get why they look back at old concepts, it's mining the original creative source that spawned Star Wars for more ideas. That way, you know the movie will "feel" similar to the old ones. However, whenever the prequel trilogy did this - bringing back concepts from the original drafts of SW '77 (Mace Windu) or early universe bible material that never really manifested anywhere (midichlorians, the Sith) - it always felt a bit ingenuine. Come up with an original idea already!

That being said, I'm keeping an open mind about BB8 because I love astromech droids and their lore. Helps that he's a cute little thing.

I'm very impressed that the prop is apparently real (and remote controlled!).

Rian Johnson has just been confirmed as the director of Star Wars Episode VIII via a Disney shareholders call. Along with that news, we’ve got the Star Wars Episode VIII release date: May 26, 2017.

The official Star Wars site confirms the report. We’ve known that Johnson would write and direct the next major Star Wars chapter, but we’ll take the confirmation.

More interesting is that the release of Episode VIII brings the series back to its traditional May opening spot after the push to December for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This release date is also forty years and one day after the opening of the original Star Wars in 1977.

(J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy had reportedly asked Disney to push The Force Awakens back to May 2016, but that didn’t happen.)

We don’t know anything about the cast or story of Episode VIII at this point, other than the fact that many people will carry forward from The Force Awakens. But since the story of that film remains generally unknown at this point, we have nothing to go on as far as expectations for the Episode VIII story.

Reports say Daisy Ridley will be in all three upcoming major Episodes, but that is unconfirmed. Mark Ruffalo, who appeared in Johnson’s second film The Brothers Bloom, asked to be in Johnson’s Star Wars film, but we don’t know how that worked out. Rian Johnson has also been said to be writing Star Wars Episode IX, but we don’t have confirmation of that at this point.

Here’s an official rundown of the eighth major Star Wars film:

[Bob] Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of Looper, Don Jon, Brick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

 No.589[Reply]

A random idea came to me today: Why bother with Endor or the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi? Cutting them out entirely and moving the shield generator onto the Death Star itself would have made the story considerably more logical and tighter.

Luke (and possibly a strike team?) goes on a covert mission to sneak into the Death Star itself to disable the shield, where he is discovered (or surrenders to buy time for the rest of the team?) and brought before the Emperor, whose throne is above the shield generator. Duel happens as usual, Emperor is thrown down a shaft to destroy the shield generator, bringing it down allowing the fighters (led by Han with Lando?) to bring down the Death Star. Luke (and team?) evacuates with Vader's body as the fighter squad goes in and takes down the Death Star.

1. Removing the extra step of a separate shield generator on Endor allows the main characters to be more together and involved. Lando was nice, but it still felt a bit weird to have a relative newcomer in that role alone.
2. Putting the shield generator within the Death Star itself just feels like it makes more sense and safer from an in-universe perspective.
3. Putting the shield generator within the Death Star and having it brought down along with the Emperor gives the duel aboard it more meaning by making the Emperor more of a load-bearing boss. Sure, the load-bearing boss is something of a cliche, but Star Wars was built on tropes.
4. No Ewok controversy.

Just some thoughts. Feel free to criticize or give your own.
1 post omitted. Click reply to view.

 No.591

Personally I would have preferred they didn't have a second Death Star. It felt a little too derivative of ANH. Maybe instead have Luke be called to Imperial Centre to fight Vader, and the gang join him to help out.

 No.592

>>589
The way shield generators work in Star Wars seems a bit confusing, the one on Hoth was strong enough to withstand any bombardment, how does that work for ships etc?

Anyway Lucas always wanted to do something Vietnam war themed, at one point he was lined up to direct Apocalypse Now and the original Star Wars script had the wookies from a forest planet helping them fight the Death Star.

The Ewoks and forrest planet were about a theme of primitives vs technology, it wasn't about the details of it.

 No.941

>>589
The Deathstar 2 did have an internal shield-generator if I'm not mistaken.
The shield on the moon of endor is essentially a construction-shield untill the internal shield generator is finished. (why waste your own power on a shield generator when you can have one nearby on the moon?)

also; I doubt the *splat* of the emperor would've done much damage to the shield-generator, not to mention that the energy-burst that resulted from his death was purely force-based and it did no damage.

keep Ewok controversie because they're still tons better than the friggin' gungans.

also; I think the Hoth comment of "it is strong enough to withstand any bombardment." is basically hyperbaly. I suppose bombarding the shield with a star destroyer would work, but they're not considering that as a viable strategy, because those things are bloody expensive.

 No.943

you have to remember that shielding and lasers n shit all revolve around the transference of energy

so yeah, the shields from the generator on hoth could withstand an orbital bombardment unless they had jihadi star destroyers. but this is why they had a ground assault, to destroy said shield generators. fortunately the rebels had their ion cannon as backup and by the time the generator was down most of them had dipped.

not to mention, they had just gotten the superlaser up and running by the time of the battle, so i seriously doubt shielding was a primary task at that point when they had the base on on the moon.

 No.952

Ion Cannon is overpowered.

I think my favorite thing about this show is that it's a vestige of an era when Star Wars could appeal to children in an episodic format just by showing you more of the universe, without tacking on too many major dead weight characters. I suppose R2-D2 and C3PO themselves were already "kid appeal" characters, but at least they were an established part of the world that no one was angry to see more of.

Like, I'm enjoying Rebels, but the kid appeal OC protagonist does more harm than good for me. I felt similarly about Ahsoka in TCW.
