So, why was C3PO's mind wiped but not R2-D2's? Did they trust Artoo not to blab any secrets because he isn't capable of speaking English?

Or did they just hate Threepio and want to fuck with him?

 No.1101

I guess they thought that an astromech droid was incapable of holding long term memories or personality? Maybe it was standard procedure to wipe the mind of a droid when it changes owners?

 No.1102

Didn't they both have their memories wiped?

Bigger problem is Obi Wan not recognizing them.

IIRC, Organa's exact line when he gives the droids to Captain Antilles is "have the protocol droid's memory wiped." Unless I'm taking it too literally, I don't think R2-D2 ever got his memory wiped, and since Artoo was supposed to recount the whole saga to the Whills a century after the Battle of Endor (Lucas's idea, so canon as of the making of ROTS), he'd have to remember it somehow.

Honestly, I think the line was just Lucas covering his ass. Nothing in the OT suggests that Threepio knows Darth Vader is Anakin, much less that was created by Anakin, so he'd have to have some kind of mind wipe between Eps III and IV for the sake of retcon. Meanwhile, Artoo, who can't communicate anything to the audience because we don't speak his "language," is free to have all the insider info he wants. Convenient.

I'm sure there's a canon explanation for this, and I sure as hell hope it's better than mine.

It's entirely possible that he did recognize them but was keeping his cool to not say anything. He wanted to be careful not to spill any info to Luke about Vader being his father

I think Obi called R2 his old friend. But can't remember.

Just for clarification, C3PO learns that Padme had the kids before dying, and 3PO leans over to R2 ecstatic about getting to tell Leia about her parents, which prompts Bail to have his mind wiped.

In the E3 novelization.

 No.1146

I know astromech droids supposedly get quirky and independent when they don't get memory wiped, but Bail clearly says to have the protocol droid wiped. There may be some technical reason but the real reason is to explain why 3PO never said anything about Anakin in the original trilogy.

Thank you. I need to read the novelizations, I hear they sometimes have cool shit in them. All I've read is Ep IV's.
