Anyone remember these? It was a series of young adult books in the late nineties that tried to capture the audience of "scary" books like Fear Street and Goosebumps, except with a Star Wars theme. If it sounds cheesy, that's because it was, but it was also cool and weird as hell, and yes, even a little scary.

Pic related, this book was actually my first ever introduction to the EU. To buy something, as a kid who didn't know any better, because it said "Star Wars" on the cover only to find that it starred a couple random teens and Luke was only an incidental character, was a pretty weird experience and a big part of the reason why I'm still enraptured by the EU today.

There's a pretty crazy plot twist that sets up the scene on the cover, but I won't spoil it in case anyone wants to read it.

This never occurred to me.

I had a couple of these books but I never read them. I couldn't really get into the young adult books and just read the mainline EU. The young adult stuff always had better cover art though.

So since you made this thread I searched my files (downloaded a torrent of about 1 gig of Star Wars books and stuff a while ago) and found transcripts of these books, so I read them all, since it picked my interest, good light reading, it gets somewhat repetitive, like, they are always shoving in your face the characters introductions and stuff, although it makes sense for those who wouldn't read all the books, some stuff, if not most stuff on there it's chessy, but would recommend if you wanna something o read at the toilet.

My favorites were "The Doomsday ship" and "City of the Dead".

Oh hey, my elementary school's library had a bunch of these. Armor of Terror was my favorite one, I did my first book report on it in the 4th Grade.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't care about spoilers, could someone explain how it got to that point?

>mfw the EU and SW will never be like my bittersweet past ever again…

I will always have my memories of those times and my beloved entry into the EU. I will never forget.

Pic related was and still is the only EU material I have ever read if you don't count the many SW video games I've played during the years but I never really looked at them as EU content. Did I miss anything? OP's thing looks pretty neat. I have a son who just got old enough to appreciate the films, are there any books that are both good and kid friendly that you guys would recommend?

Games are classified as EU.

Splinter was going to be Star Wars 2 if the first movie didn't make enough money for ESB to be produced.

There's a lot of young adult Star Wars novels.

Galaxy of Fear and Jedi Apprentice are two I remember.

I think, by the transcription I have read, it's mostly artistic interpretation from the ilustrator part, Vader has the Arrandas (the kids) captive for some time as Vader interrogates them about various things, then in the last chapters of the book, Vader is fighting the mars attack creature with the kids, his uncle (the shido being attacked in the picture) plus their droid trapped in one chamber, Vader used the force to seal them in as he fights the creature, but it's just so he can trap them later.

But it seems OP remembers something different, it could be the transcription I have read is wrong perhaps?

Wow, that's neat af. Sorry for bumping my own old-ass thread, but I actually haven't looked at this thread in months, and I'm pretty surprised someone actually took me up on my recommendation and read the books. That's pretty cool. Glad you enjoyed them.

>>3910

No, that sounds mostly right to me. The "big twist" I was referring to in the OP was the revelation that the mars attacks monster on the cover is actually the same as the baby-like character the teens are protecting throughout the book. His supposed name, Eppon, is a mishearing of the name his creators gave him, "weapon."

Jedi Apprentice is a great series not just for kids, but for anyone who likes Star Wars really, because it does a much better job of fleshing out the world and the characters of The Phantom Menace (especially Qui Gon) than Lucas ever could. Plus, they're just plain good books.

I may be making a mistake here by revealing my youth, but my mom used to read the Jedi Apprentice books to my brother and I before we went to bed.

I went to elementary school in a small, private school that had a "library" that was really only about 4 or 5 bookshelves, and this was the only Star Wars book they had. (This was the early 2000s, mind you, well after the book came out.) As a result, just about everyone in my class wound up reading it. Good memory.

Nowadays, I hear a lot of hate for Splinter online, usually focusing on how it's poorly written and boring. While I can understand why some people don't like his style, I can't believe there are people who think Alan Dean Foster is a bad writer. His novelization of A New Hope is still one of my favorite SW books, and manages to take a preexisting story and make it into a compelling novel of its own.

As for the supposed "boringness" of Splinter, well, it was designed to be released as a low budget film sequel if need be, after all. This hampered a lot of the creativity the book could have had. Hence why it's set entirely on a generic foggy swamp planet etc.

Meh, the moment he was alone with that rebel soldier, who then disappeared it was obvious he was gonna be the monster/danger in turn I mean, they found him in an abandoned evil research facility for Force' sake.

Should have put "Spore" up there when I was telling my favorites, basically, almost anything that didn't feature the main Star Wars cast, weird huh?

But yeah, like I said, some fun to read if anything, and Tash a cute.

Cute!

I'll probably read Jedi Apprentice eventually, I'm itching for some Qui Gon Shenanigans.

They weren't amazing, but they certainly were fun without a doubt.
