Upon my first viewing of the original trilogy I was very intrigued by the character of Owen Lars. His fear of the Jedi and of Luke ending up "like his father" were extremely prescient given that the story of Anakin Skywalker as we know it today had not yet been written at the time Owen's dialogue was conceived, and the prequels could've taken this plot thread in a very interesting direction.

Instead, we learn that Owen and Anakin weren't even blood related and met maybe all of once. One of the biggest lost opportunities in a trilogy full of disappointments.

Discuss Uncle Owen here.

Well the whole backstory established in ANH was pretty much thrown out by ESB when Lucas made Darth Vader Luke's father.

When ROTJ came around Owen was meant to be Obi Wan's brother.

Following what was laid out in the OT for the PT would have been pretty hard.

it actually makes a lot of sense

owen is luke's uncle-in-law. no kid ever feels comfortable being raised by their in-laws, and no in-law would ever feel comfortable raising their in-law's kids. there's always going to be that inevitable space. if owen and anakin were blood related it would be different, owen would treat luke as if he was his own child. i mean, luke was literally delivered to owen's doorstep and pretty much given no say at all in the decision, so he has every right to be distant. or, had owen and anakin known each other longer than a week at most, their relationship would also be much more different.

now the question is, did owen ever learn if vader was anakin? i'm referring to the "luke has too much of his father in him. that's what i'm afraid of." scene, or was that all based upon their few days spent together?

In the time Owen knew Anakin, he rushed off across the Jundland wastes on a speeder to eradicate an entire village. Even if the intentions were good, and Owen appreciated that Shmi was brought home, that's still probably the most reckless thing he had ever seen anyone do.

>did owen ever learn if vader was anakin?

Only if Obi Wan told him.

If those rumors of a series of Obi Wan movies ever come true it'll probably get explained.
