Hardly. Star Wars got big because it combined a simple easy to digest story, with pretty spectacular visuals that blew pretty much anything that came before out of the water. Thrown in an enjoyable easy to expand on universe that millions of tards like us got into, and you have a recipe for a giant success.

But sure, if it came out today it probably wouldn't be very well received and quickly forgotten. The acting in particular is pretty rough, and great special effects shows are a dime a dozen these days. It didn't come out today though, it came out in 1977.

Sitting in the movie theatre during the premier of ROJ. I waited in line overnight. It was when we see the Ewok's leg walking through the forest. I thought - oh, fuck…

But it took decades after that before the whole thing actually died for me. I guess that was the first strike, followed by many others. Like hanging on to an abusive relationship.

Fate of the Jedi books on my nightstand the the X-wing book series above my computer. Zahn trilogy in the closet and dozens more scattered all over the house. I've read at least half the books in the EU.

As well I'm own multiple action figures and have an Asajj Ventress Gentle Giant figure ontop of my bed's headboard from the Clone Wars miniseries that I won from Imperial Holonet Radio when they were around

adjusted for inflation, a new hope is still the highest grossing SW film and like the 3rd highest grossing film of all time. empire didn't make as much back in its theatrical run, when a new hope became the highest grossing picture in the world at its time.

A New Hope got a ton of theatrical re-issues though, it was in theaters to some extent every year from 1977-1981. There was the theatrical run of the special editions as well, the only time Empire and Jedi got a second run.
