When I first watched the original trilogy (like 15 years ago) i found the Telepathy part more as part of that sibling connection than the force.

you also have to remember that lucas had obi-wan come back to life at one point, shit constantly changed. if anything it was just a cliffhanger twist that at the last moment he decided he had to pursue it.
