lucas was an executive producer on the show

on top of that any eu stuff went through his approval first, filoni tried to fill in as much with the good eu shit as he could to make it canon. now that disney runs it and has rebels, filoni literally just needs to make sure it doesn't contradict with the OT and it's good to go.
