For a personal copy of the original theatrical trilogy? I am asking because I have recently found my '95 THX edition VHS set degrading in quality, and I would like something that will maintain shelf life.

It is the best way but you could also download the despecialized editions if laserdisc is too hard to find.

It is not that the actual set is hard to find, it is just that I would have to invest in a Laserdisc player.

For something like this, I would rather have the physical media

get the vhs collector's tin box set, it has just a lightsaber on the covers of each film and comes with the full scripts

it doesn't matter what version of the film exists, it's still star wars a new hope and fox owns that for infinity, disney would have to cut a deal with them for any new release.

They would only have to cut a deal with Fox if they wanted to give A New Hope another theatrical run. Anything else and Disney can do whatever it wants, as it just did by releasing Episode IV digitally last month.

I am most worried about the degradation of the media over time, and magnetic tape really does not have much longevity.

If they had just been "misplaced" Disney would have their hands on them now. Reason I find it impossible for the original masters to actually be gone is without them doing further re-releases would be pretty much impossible. Can't have a 4k remaster if you don't have the original film to scan. Though a 4k version of the PT would be impossible thanks to Episodes II&III being filmed on 1080p digital cameras. I would laugh so hard if they actually just release them horribly upscaled.
