there's a chance they were hoping the Empire wouldn't use walkers. Trenches work well against infantry when properly set up, and the terrain was dangerous enough that several walkers were lost in the approach due to poor command. They don't seem to perform well in cold environments.

They were probably there as precautions when they first set up.

The trenches could do literally nothing against the walkers, they could all just walk past the soldiers.

It would have made more sense to have the troops inside the base. The entire trench line was based around fighting off ground troops that never showed up.

How? Only way to get an angle on it would be to come in head on, which puts you in the firing arc of all its weapons.

I remember reading in the original book that the troops inside touched off their ordnance to try to take some rebels out, since they assumed they would be killed anyway and force knows what kind of things they were told through propaganda the rebels would do to them if they were captured…

Seems like a sound move, why fight through trenches when you can walk over them? Rebels were counting on the cold taking deployment of the Walkers out of the picture, which did almost happen.

Delaying action. They needed to keep the Imperials busy long enough to get their transports out. It was basically a matter of keeping the Imperial focus off the transports and on them.

Their gun emplacements are old and outdated, but still effective against a fair amount of Imperial Vehicles. They were just unfortunate that the Imperials were able to get their AT-AT's through (they lost a few of them to the terrain before the battle).
