what they were thinking, we will never know. smart idea to remove it for the 04 dvd release. but other than that it's basically a flawless film in terms of editing.

It was a really shitty mask, and they superimposed in chimpanzee eyes for whatever reason. I will never understand how people can prefer this over the Ian McDiarmid version.

The McDiarmid design in the DVD version of ESB clashes with the design in ROTJ.

It's because they filmed it during ROTS but it's still a problem that it doesn't match up exactly with the ROTJ design.

The new scene introduced a story discrepancy.

In the new scene Vader acts surprised that he has a son despite knowing the name "Luke Skywalker" earlier in the movie and this replaces the more nuanced dialogue that gives Vader a hidden agenda and a more complex relationship to the Emperor.

The original dialog between them didn't make much sense either. The Emperor just randomly calls to bug Vader about something he already knows? Not sure what you mean about his hidden agenda either, he still brings up the idea to turn Luke rather than kill him.

That was the hidden agenda, Vader wanted to convince the Emperor not to give the order to kill Luke so that Vader could work with his son to kill the Emperor, it sets up what happens later.

Rule of two wasn't around at this point either.

Movies shouldn't be permanently altered to look 'better'. Movies are records of their time and constraints. It's one thing to change the movies, it's another thing to change the movies then try your damnedest to make sure the old versions no longer exist, except in copies of a primitive preservation effort versions.
