The New Republic we know exists from the stuff about the Battle of Jaku. So I don't really understand why we need a resistance faction as well.

Lets see, there's the Mandalorians (Military Faction), the Hutt Cartel/Hutt Space (Criminal Faction), and the CIS and Corporate Sector Authority (Corporate Faction). Those I can name at the top of my head. Feel free to list more that I haven't mentioned.
