Kinda spoilers for Ep 7 below? I dunno, this topic kind of extends beyond that.

So rumors say that Leia is now a queen in Ep 7. Which got me to thinking: queen of what exactly? the asteroid field formerly known as Alderraan? I don't recall her being called "princess" after her planet blew up up in the OT, but maybe I'm wrong.

Tl;dr: does Leia have any right to maintain her royalty status given that her planet/kingdom was asploded?

Yes because there are still Alderaanians about.

According to Gary Kurtz this was the original idea for the end of ROTJ, Leia going off to be the queen of her remaining people.

And another thing, is it ever addressed anywhere how much the public knows about Luke and Leia's relationship to Vader? I haven't been keeping up on my EU stuff, but I can't imagine that everyone would ignore the fact they're the spawn of a mass murderer.

If I recall the anakin=vader wasn't that known throughout the galaxy and Luke tried to keep it on the down low. I remember Anakin Solo being all butthurt over it but he got over it eventually.

Well… her mother was an "elected" queen with defined terms (Which actually configures a presidency)
