Hotline Miami 2 anticipation thread.
Who's excited? What do you know about the game so far? What do you think of the sequel?
I've been in the dark in terms of story, so I have no clue what's going on in 2 other than the fans. I am however excited by the level editor that's going to come with the game.

Personally, I've had just enough of Hotline Miami. I think that if I tried to play the sequel, I would be a little bored from the very beginning. Not that I was bored at the end of the first one, but I was well-fed.
I saw a trailer where a player was shooting in two different directions simultaneously, which was weird, and seems like a chaotic mechanic.
Also, I thought the level editor was being patched in sometime after release. I'm probably wrong, though.
Sorry for not helping with the hype.

>>1058The level editor was going to be part of a patch until they decided to make the sequel from the ground up in a new language without GameMaker 2012.
About the shooting mechanic, it seems each character and set of missions adds even more unique gameplay traits and styles so I think it will change gameplay up more. Kinda like the difference between the Helmet and Jacket missions. What were your thoughts on the first game?

>>1059I had fun with it. Like most people, I enjoyed listening to the soundtrack a lot. I still go back to it sometimes.
The game's difficulty was at a good level, and the movement and shooting are both slick. But the enemies that were set to patrol in a random fashion put a bad taste in my mouth when I tried to plan my route. As well, the impenetrability and hyperactivity of the doors led to some weird situations.
The theme of the game, if I understood correctly, had to do with our love of violence. That was completely lost on me, since I remember wishing I could turn off gore when I was watching promotional material.
One of my favorite games of the past few years, but I don't want to play any more.

>Who's excited? >What do you think of the sequel?Planning to buy it on gog when it releases. Loved the first, couldn't put it down when I picked it up. Hard for me to get that feeling anymore, but I don't play many shooters to begin with, let alone top down shooters.
But I dunno, maybe some of the magic I had with it was just because I didn't really know what I was going into.
>What do you know about the game so far? That its gameplay looks the same, but with more mechanics (Dual wield in two directions, if I remember was one of them.) I couldn't tell if masks were replaced by people. Not sure I'm keen on less selection, if that's the case. I know people probably found the mask they were solid with and stuck with it, but I liked having the options
I have no idea if the level design will be garbage or if the music choices will be worse. But it looks promising.
>I've been in the dark in terms of storySame here, other than I know I'm not playing as the same guy and someone made a movie out of him.

I'll get it on humblebundle drm free a bit after it comes out, once I see the general reaction to solidify my purchase. Loved the first one.

Hotline Miami/10
It's all about brutal murder to the background of sick beats.

That's a unique reaction to the game, I'm interested to know why you think that is? I remember it tickled a little atrophied part of my psyche that gets disgusted by gore and actually made me feel something for once when I first played it, especially when the player throws up after his first mission. They didn't need to give him exposition or anything to deal with the fact he lost his humanity with the first gangster's head he smashed in, they just gave him a guttural human reaction and that was that.

Check out >>707 I posted some of the music previews of HM2. Personally I think it has some sick beats yo.

Yeah, pretty much. The story in 1 was pretty much the same, I don't expect this one to be much different. They posed more questions to the player than the world itself, and they answered very little of those questions for you.

Hotline Miami is not really my cup of tea (and no, i don't know why, it just didn't clicked with me)
but i sure as hell want it to succeed cuz it's a very good indie game, it revitalized a old genre of gameplay which we didn't saw a good game of it's type for a while before it.
also, some parts of the story of the first was downright max payne levels of atmospheric. The rescue of the hooker was just awesome.
someday maybe i will revisit it and find it as fun as take no prisoners is.

This is now a buyer's remorse thread.
The entire game is Hot & Heavy and the checkpoints are WAY too far apart. Not having fun at all.

>>2234I agree with you. This game also destroyed a lot of Jacket's mystique from the first one. But I've already shit on the game enough on lesser /v/, I'm tired of going over the shit that made me mad.
What's the song that plays during the ending?

HLM1 is a great game at least, definitely advisable.
cdc586 No.2329
>>2234>>2241I actually like it so far but I also haven't beaten it. The last game had the level progression where by the end almost every level was also Hot & Heavy in that there were glass windows everywhere and thugs with guns. It makes sense this game picks up were that left off.
Will write my full thoughts at the end of this playthrough or maybe once I do it over in hard mode.

Alright
Although I don't have IMMENSE buyer's remorse, I can honestly say I don't like it as much as part 1. The game forces you to play far more defensively as opposed to going in guns blazing and because of this forces a really "un-fun" gameplay feeling. The pacing is ruined because of this and I don't feel like I'm playing a game dedicated to be difficult, but fair. Instead I get this feeling like they were looking at this age of teenagers circle jerking over their Dark Souls is SO BRUTAL and "DIFFICULTY = GOOD GAME DESIGN" discussion and just tried to make the game as unforgiving as possible. I'm disappointed in the product given to us by the developer but am eager to see what fans can give us with the level editor. Hopefully they won't take this influence of terrible game design in mind when creating a new era of Hotline Miami stories.
please don't hate me, i'm sorry about my opinion, really.
fde7a2 No.2364
It's overall disappointing, yet still a really solid game worth the price. There's more of a focus on guns, to the point where there's very few melee weapons in the game, which to me is a shame. My favorite aspect of the original is the variety of weapons, some of which may have been useless, but at least they were there. And honestly, there's not enough gun types in Hotline 2, which makes matters worse. Also, the mask system is used so infrequently, which to me weakens its replayability.
The large focus of variety in level design helps you ignore many of the games problems, the level design is often really well done. Despite that it's often linear, where at times the only way to progress through a level is baiting enemies, which is just poor design. Another problem that plagues the level design is how sprawling most levels are, often leading to death due to the shear size of certain levels, it's too large for the game's fov. You'll often get shot by an enemy who's on the other side of the level, it just feels cheap. I'm glad the level design is often so damn good, it helps me ignore the game's idiosyncrasies.
The story is an absolute cluster fuck, filled with so many characters (some needless) you'll often lose track of what's going. I do really like the story however, it adds background to the vhs clerk and jacket's relation ship, plus the first phone call and how everything started. But I can not stress it enough the story is such a mess, probably purposely made this way to seem 2deep4 you when it's really as simple as the original game's story. Eithe rway, the story moves along the gameplay very well. Oh, and that fucking ending is amazing.
Solid 7.5/10

>>2353>>2364I agree completely. The only thing I am missing is the inability to kill the big lads in melee. That said, I'd probably grade the game lower, especially compared to the first: it is no longer rabid and morbid, but rather slow and steady.
Also, what is everyone's favourite character? Mine is the writer: got a Jackie Chan feeling from him. It was different and lovely.

I'm actually having a lot of fun with this, and I'm pretty excited for the level editor. I know I'm in the minority when I say this but I like that they doubled down on difficulty, even if it does reach bullshit-tier and then some.
1c1283 No.4444
This game's pace was terribly irregular, like hitting the gas pedal and then the break pedal every five feet.
But the final missions as The Son justified my playthrough I think. Good map design, not much story, but what was there was good, and it explained the nonsense from the first 1/3 of the game.
He was a neat dude, too; a drug-addled badass who can rob banks and decimate a skyscraper full of Columbians with just a katana, as well as a smart and forgiving leader.
e09363 No.4533
>>4444Quads are fitting for such a well written post. I agree that The Son was a great character, but all his maps were just too fucking big. If they could have shrunk the scale down and had blacks OR swordsmen the levels would have been infinitely better. Nothing killed the pace for me quite like shooting the shit out of some negro I can't punch and then having to run all the way back to the beginning of the level to find the pipe dropped by the only melee guy on the level.

>>2372My favorite character would probably be The Swans. Ash gets stuck in walls a lot, but other then that, they're the best. Being able to take down the big guys with meele is a blessing.

Okay, now that the dust has settled a little.
I must say that I didn't like 2 at all, despite being a huge fan of the first one.
However, after some time, I wen back to it with a different mindset, and holy shit, is that game good. Yes, it has become a top-down shooter instead of what's known as Hotline Miami, but it's a fun one. I really recommend you check it out once again; I've now clocked 33 hours in it.
