What do you think when games provide power-ups you actually want to avoid?

c95f49 No.11492

It depends. If the game has a wide selection of power-ups, I don't mind if there are a few that can be ignored. Although sometimes it's down to preference, I really dislike gimmick power-ups with only a few specific scenarios in which they're useful.

What's your favorite useless power-up anon?

Don't Power-up: The Game

one power up i can't stand is homing attacks in vert shooters. they're always unbearably weak and all they do is remove the necessity to move slightly left or right. why the fuck would i want that over a bigger power boost? pic semi-related, i'm sure there are games guilty of this worse than 19xx but nothing else stands out as badly

shit, i remember a lot of terrible flash games when i was a teenager that did the same shit. fucking annoying.

homing shots are weaker because you can focus only on dodging, they're not that bad depending on the game. If you don't have much dodging to do then they're bad I guess

Homing missiles in Blazing Lazers are overpowered as hell though. When you power them up to high speed and combine with shot type 1 you can practically just sit around anywhere on the screen and they'll obliterate everything.

The secret homing power-up in Battle Garegga is absolutely essential for beating stage 6. One of the most powerful bikes in Armed Police Batrider also has homing missiles.

I agree it's pretty dildos in 19XX but I think it really depends on the game.

I barely ever use the homing attacks in Radiant Silvergun, it was just easier using the vulcan cannon and those bombs that fire diagonally

Anon, that thing obliterates most bosses and every beefy enemy in the series.

In Super Castlevania IV it's pretty worthless though.

I like how half the time you find this item you're facing hoards of projectile enemies and it actually makes it much more difficult to herd and dodge their projectiles.

For newbies it's useful but man it messes up people who've built up a good dodge reflex.

The berserk pack is also kinda underwhelming.
It does only slighty more that double the damage of the chainsaw, and lacks the stunlock that makes the chainsaw so useful, and switching to fists automatically can be a hindrance.

At least it's a 100% heal and can be better that the chainsaw on some situations.

There's also the fact that it forces you to switch to your fists every time. Can be dangerous losing your gun momentarily in a tight fight.

Most potions in temple of elemental evil.

so… I get the same effect as a spell I could cast

With none of the goodness behind having an actual spellcaster.
