There's a bunch of auto-pause options in the menu. I'm sure you would be able to work something out, it won't be completely turn based though.

Anyone else think that the lore about souls and gods was a little underwhelming? I feel like they never really expanded on it like they should have, and that it never went anywhere. Thinking about it, I feel that way about most of the lore for the game.

The descriptions and in-game books for the gods were all decent but it felt like a drop when I wanted an ocean.

67abe2 No.12418

>>12411
Yes although I can't really pinpoint why.

The revelation of the true nature of the gods lacks impact being the first game in the setting. Casually interacting with them as if they were any other NPC also throws any sense of mystery out the window.

bcac5c No.12427

>>12418
Yeah I think that makes sense. That and you never really see anything they do.

The lore concerning the gods just seems to take elements from ancient faiths but lacking 90% of the complexity or depth of them. It's just a sort of face-value thing.

I also thought the ending was pretty disappointing, and there wasn't enough involving the leaden key during the main story. There wasn't any real feeling of build up like in BG2, where finally being able to confront Irenicus was a huge deal. Even BG1 built up to the ending much better.

Also fuck the stronghold and reputation system. It was so fucking useless. Given that you had a stronghold I at least expected it to play a major role in the game but you can pretty much just ignore it and not give a fuck. It's just there to net you extra treasure over time, but otherwise is useless. Caed Nua was at least fun, but that doesn't really have anything to do with the hold. I only remember 1 part of the game where I needed to have a certain reputation to access a quest, and only a few NPCs act differently based on reputation.

Overall I thought the game was good, I like the combat system and the world is a good start. It really does feel like an infinity engine game. Problem is, playing through it for a second time really highlights just how bad most of the encounters really are. There is so much more crowd control compared to IE games, and encounters often have groups of enemies that just spam CC or cause it on hit. Obsidian will never reach the heights of their past it seems. Most RPG companies are dead or dying. It's sad.

67abe2 No.12444

>>12427
Given Pillar's critical and commercial success it doesn't seem unreasonable to hope that they'll take lessons learned from it and make a decent expac or sequel. There's obviously a market for games like Pillars and Obsidian have demonstrated they're capable of making a very playable cRPG.

>female party member's not for fucking

and then a quest about an abusive husband. How wrong is it? Let's count the ways at the start
1) Buying a diamond ring to mark an engagement didn't become a practice until the 1800s.
2) Women weren't served in bars until prohibition.
3) The earliest laws against hitting women were mild as the Rule of Thumb. No one would think anything of a woman being beaten, including the woman.
4) A woman wouldn't travel without a male escort unless she were a whore.
5) Divorces didn't exist. Annulments from the church were rare.

It's fucking disgraceful to give so little a shit about european culture while everything good in your setting is derivative of it. To try to revise feudal european history into some marxist power fantasy is an insult to the people who actually lived that history. Fuck these marxists. >gameplay

meh.

Close to what it said-on-the tin. Another isometric game akin to those of yore. Some of the mechanics are more like WoW while others are more like DnD 4th so it's a weird hodgepodge.

Like various folks have pointed out, intelligence is a dump stat. |I tried to give the benefit of the doubt and regret it. The decision |I find weirder than magic-damage going to "might" is every class having a fixed accuracy and dexterity buffing speed. Maybe that's effectively the same in their engine but it's not transparent enough, even with the feedback text, to know.

How long are "fast", "average", "slow" and "very slow" speeds? We know the damage is a small difference of 2 for many weapons but not how big these speed-grades are. Is it 2x as often? 3x? 5s? Even a percentile would be useful.
I'm sure someone has projected the answers on a wiki or using a debug tool but that doesn't fix the developer's failure.

I can see the rest system as an improvement over Neverwinter Nights and the like and in related news don't think Wizards are worthless like so many people complain. In the old 3rd edition games you could spam your highest-level spells each fight, waste everything, then rest. The rest of the party were just walls for the Wizard. Wizards are definitely nerfed in Eternity but that's for the better in overall class-balance. Now there's a point to the other classes presence and you're punished with the tedium of travel-time if you want to restock campfire supplies.

The load screens are horrendous as everyone has pointed out. I don't understand how the fuck 2d sprites on such tiny maps can be too much for an engine on modern equipment to un/load without loading screens. Obsidian's programmers must keep their jobs through nepotism. You never hear of a smooth Obsidian game and they don't seem to recognize their horrible performance repuation.

There's some nuance added to |AoE effects from the two-rings and their smaller size means you can cast without hitting your party, unlike in 3rd edition where you'd have to turn off friendly fire or scarcely use your most powerful |AoE abilities.

Pathing's fucking horrible. Basic shit like, "if this model collides with a friendly model the friendly model should be pushed aside for it to pass" is not programmed into the engine so you have the fun of tedious shit like moving party members out of one another's way.

Basic functionality's missing from the inventory system too. In any other game, even a first studio effort hack'n slash with a small budget like Torchlight, you double-click an item in your inventory and it's equipped to the character. In Eternity you must tediously drag items to their slots. Even worse, it will retardedly generate errors about how you can't add an item. So you have to manually drag out what's currently equipped instead of them automatically swapping out.

The health mechanic's interesting. It means you can't die in a single fight but you can in two. So I guess it's really just n00bification.

Guns are worthless as everyone has said. It's a slower version of the crossbow which aims worse.

What I miss most in such a system is dramatic status changes. The best combat I remember from BG 2 was a fight I kept losing against a bunch of clerics. My party was getting raped as fighters were converted to the clerics side, they healed what damage they took, powerful spells killed resistant party members and so forth. I read through all the abilities available and finally discovered an answer: a Swarm spell silenced the affected models. This single spell turned the entire battle scenario starkly in my favor as a bunch of clerics unable to cast for a few turns were cut down by hasted fighters.

There has been nothing approaching the feeling of learning the system and a fight turning on a small ability/equipment switch-up in PE as in the games it's supposed to succeed.

The system favors small distinctions so it doesn't matter much which you choose.

461b6b No.12798

>>12796
Damn nigga, I don't know where to respond first.

Guns are pretty good on rogues with sneak attack, they can just kill shit half the time.

I don't know how endurance or health is n00bification. Its pretty unforgiving on harder difficulties since you can only keep two camping supplies.

The pathfinding is pretty weird, but hilarious at times. I had a boar run a circle around the party for the whole combat because the tanks where already enganged with all the other boars.

Really the game is best described as "okay". Mostly because the drywood is dry as wood. And about as interesting. I found rautoa is way more interesting with its underwater shark orgies. The mega-dungeon makes up for it some with some balls hard fights.

efc489 No.12901

Shade, ghosts, spirits and shit are the strongest enemies in the game.

No other enemies can teleport, stun, daze, blind, and cause a DR bypass with their standard attack. Oh and they can summon more of themselves.

Fuck shades, shadows and phantoms. Shitty encounters and shitty enemies like that just aren't fun. A lot less fun when you're soloing, with a party it isn't as bad. The enemies have too much CC and there aren't enough ways to resist it.

So good luck trying to hit the fucking things.

The saves don't do shit anyway. If you save against the first they'll get you with the second.

Which comes a second after the first attack.

At this point in the game it takes way too much resources to take them down.

I am really fond of Pillars of Eternity and I can't say I disagree with the conclusion. In spite of all the creative freedom Obsidian got, they barely utilized it in fear of offending the people that funded their games. Pat from the Super Best Friends noted this as well a few weeks ago in referencing the documentary: it is clear that they were/are so scared of being shut down that they made a safe, homogenized game that, albeit structurally solid, is stale in its creativity.

6e88df No.14890

Yep, those mother fuckers die from the level 2 priest spell that does fire damage and ranged piercing IE bow/crossbow. On Damned difficulty you can use the rogue to pull them one at a time sometimes and kite them with the proper run speed (which is why run speed is actually useful sometimes.)

Why is this game so painfully mediocre? Divinity OS is superior in every way.

464ff4 No.15236

fuck that rpgcodex review. seriously. it reads exactly like one of my college classmates essays where they thought the only way to "criticise" something was to hang shit on it. I'm 20 hours into poe and it ticks every fucking box, as well as having an intersting narrative.

obsidian has actually sat down and made a comprehensive, modern day rehaul of the IE and you can't handle it? fuck you posers. this is some good shit. ill revise my opinion once ive finished the game but so far its been fucking amazing

>Is your enjoyment of the game lessened by other people finding it lacking?

yeah, sometimes. especially when their points are valid. This feels more like /v/ being /v/, to the extent that people are criticising things they never even experienced firsthand.

>This feels more like /v/ being /v/

But you were upset over an RPG codex review.. of something the writer of said review clearly paid firsthand.

I completely agree with you, shit like Witcher hate threads while the game isn't even out yet is disgusting. But this here is not the case.

Just play the game you enjoy, god knows I like games other people hate, there's always someone who hates something you do. Can't let it ruin your enjoyment of things.

I really enjoyed the first 30 hours, but sadly it suffers from poor pacing and many of the 'secondary' zones just being exactly the same stuff in the same attack patterns as earlier on.

Why do they put in obscure or made up weapons like the estoc and 2-handed morningstar but they didn't include halberds? I'm not even a halberdfag but it was a pretty common weapon and its disclusion is odd.

>Find out they're total close-minded asshats

>Well damn, at least the shit I did for them never really helped them at all outside of making me look good

>Go to the knights instead

>They won't let me do shit for them because I'm in the dozens' good graces

>Even though my reputation with both of them is exactly the same

>Find out it's because of the quest I just did, wherein I gave them some broken weapons that they ended up destroying anyway

I hate it when a game railroads you like that

It's always 'join side X or Y', which is not only simplistic quest design but also excludes interesting stuff like being a double agent or offering your services to the highest bidder or whatever else they can think off.

But no, it's always A or B

I wouldn't even be so mad if there was any indication that this random bullshit I was doing would lock me into a faction
