/svidya/ is a strict /v/ alternative for moderated vidya discussion. This Board wasn't intended to replace /v/ but to aid Anon's in having vidya discussions with zero shitposters. Thanks for adding /svidya/ to /v/'s recommended boards, Mark.

What is strict /v/'s thoughts about the Diablo series? I've heard from a couple people that it's just a grindfest, but is it fun?

Somewhat fun on the first run, the rest is just a glorified treadmill

First diablo is the best imho. The progenitor of all dungeon crawlers. Spoopy atmosphere, good loot, perceptually generated dungeons. BEST OST OF ALL TIME BAR NONE.

Second did what any good sequel in the 90s did. It build upon the old game made it better with new classes giant world lots of quests and those amazing blizzard cinematics. The after your first run the game lost all its charm but some people played for phat loot by doing diablo runs.
Then the ToD came out and it was glorius. Actually made consequent replays worth it. Lots of CUHRAZEY loot that fundamentally changed how your character functioned so loot run were justified and loot was generously handed to you on top of all trading and it had a limited but fun pvp none the less.
The spoopy atmosphere was scrapped in lieu of a more Illiad adventures kinda feel which stood on its own.

D3 is D2 without the expansion and a WoW of paint. You would be excused for thinking its true WoW expansion coz it feels like one.

Abysmal story that shits on the cannon. Most characters have same skills they had in D2 but with a WoW scaling added.
Forgettable soundtrack.
Abysmal loot mechanics that even RoS didnt fix and loot drops are more frequent but still bloody useless 90% of the time.
Class balance if fucked too. Most abilities are downright inferior to others which leaves every with sames builds and same gear. Most characters cant even do high level rund without class specific raiding gear so you need to be baby sat till you do.

All in all get one 1 and 2 stay the fuck away from 3 no matter what anyone tells you or how much its costs

3 is better that /v/ would make you think, but still a bad Diablo game.

The combat itself is better that the other games, but anything else was fucked up, the story was typical Metzen dreck, the itemization is wow garbage, and the skill system makes all builds be focused on items instead of skills.

If you can get the console version for cheap, get it, since the console is not bound by DRM and has local MP.

Diablo and Diablo II are great, fun games. If you want something more fancy looking try Path of Exile, it's a better Diablo game than Diablo III

I've honestly never given it much of a try, because I find the idea of controlling a real-time action game through clicks instead of one-to-one movement absolutely appalling.

I only played 2 extensively.

It is especially grindy if you're competing on softcore ladder because of all the baal runs (full 8 player party) required to actually level up past level 93.

It's pretty cool on hardcore ladder to some extent, because there's people who'd join your game and PVP to knock you out of the competition; but it is completely undermined by being able to just make a private game or leave when someone hostiles.
(e.g just think of Dark Souls invasions, the equivalent of someone unplugging their ethernet or Alt+F4'ing when being invaded).

Post-game, experimenting with different builds is a bit fun, but at this point the most powerful builds are already found- so in that sense, the game is kind of solved. It's still grindy if you don't trade or do rushes for Hellforges for new character, as some builds require ridiculously expensive equipment (e.g Lightning Sorceress + Act2 Merc with the Infinity RW- otherwise, can't damage Lightning Immune monsters on Hell difficulty).

Trading was also kind of cool since the gold monsters dropped was completely useless to other players, so there was bartering, usually for runes or keys. (Though later on, some forum called D2JSP kind of introduced some pseudocurrency where people traded items for forum gold).

Of course now there's spambots advertising in-game items for real life cash. And unless you set a password for your session, they'll barge in your game and flood the fucking screen. I also played multiplayer the time when if you joined and left a game too quickly, battle.net kicks you off because it thinks you're a bot- which sucked for Uber Diablo hunting. Also when people kept duping items, to the point the anti-cheat measure was to delete the duplicated items- which was absolutely shitty for trades.

Locally saved characters (Singleplayer or TCP/IP multiplayer) was chill, never had to worry about my characters or account expiring- and also had most of the battle.net ladder exclusive content anyway.

Never got into it hardstyle like this guy

And only played multiplayer with friends.
Whilst it's definitely an action game to me the atmosphere and I suppose story was half the draw.

D3 fucked the atmosphere and story so it had to rely on action gameplay. Which is just not as good as other Diablo clones, let alone Diablos themselves.

It's fun for a while.

Diablo 3 has the best gameplay, if you don't mind the horrible story.
