I realize I'm incredibly late on this one, but if anyone is still lurking and is curious, I recently just got 100% on this game and loved every second.
It really is "Metroid: The Homage" but in the best way possible. It even does many things better than Metroid ever has.
There are a shit-ton of unique weapons, plenty of hidden/secret areas, tons of upgrades, a drone you can send into tight spaces and later teleport to, and the item layout/exploration is beautifully done.
Bosses are cleverly designed with "tricks" to beating them.
There's an actual plot and, despite some cheese dialogue, it's actually really good.
A couple downsides; it isn't very hard, not that Metroid ever really was, but don't expect much of a challenge. It's ugly as sin. Even thought the visual aesthetic is obviously a throwback, even Super Metroid looked better than this. The art style is fitting, but don't expect any of it to be easy on the eyes.
Also, some of the best chiptune music I've ever heard.
9/10, honestly. Great for any fan of Metroid.
