Who else has problems with naming characters in RPGS? And if you do, what do you think the problem stems from?

My own indecisiveness.

I get bothered by questions like: Does it fit the setting? What are the other characters names? If I give them a plain name, will that stick out even more? Sometimes I just blank hard too. In that case I just look around my room and still a name from something I see.

Creative sterility.

It takes me an hour and then I regret it for the rest of the time I spend playing the game. Default names are my only solace.

Used to, but now I just name my character Bogart, or use the canon names.

Depends on the game. If it's a JRPG with a main character who doesn't talk or have any real importance outside of being your avatar, I'll just use my own name. If it's an MMO, however, then there are times where I'll actually walk away from the computer for a couple of hours just so I can think of a name I'd be satisfied with. Inevitably I always fail and end up regretting my choice.

For the Etrian Odyssey games I found myself using German names for classes like the Protector and Landsknecht, Japanese names for the Ronin, and plain names for the Medic etc.

I usually use defaults. It backfired with Half-Minute Hero and I ended up getting referred to as 'hero Hero'. I named the rest of the characters after FFXII characters because I'm a spaz.

I usually stick between two to 5 names I've used in every RPG I play that I've developed characters for. Which Etrian Odyssey game is the best? How would you rank them? I haven't played any.

It depends, if it's an online RPG, it's because I want a name that isn't too tryhard, too unoriginal, too edgy, and memorable. If it is just single player, I usually try a name that is sort of in line with the universe but normally default to older names like Reynald or Cormac.

The urge to name them after me.
Doing so with a whole family was pretty much ruined by Mother 3. I murdered my brother, mom died, and Dad just… wandered. Not pleasant
Otherwise, I just tend to pull random stuff that barely connects to the thing out of my back. Like naming a water user "Barbie" because of the band Aqua, or an thunder-spell guy "Tidus" because he plays BLITZball.
