I'm looking to play some difficult PC games to play. I like Dwarf Fortress, Hearts of Iron, Aurora and anything that uses your brain. Are there any very hard games that I can get off Steam or GOG or somewhere online?

What's the hardest PC game you've ever played?

Well are you looking for a fair challenge or something just plain difficult?

Raiden III is a good native PC pick if you're looking for a nice challenge. Be sure to get it off GOG because I think the Steam version actually has DRM attached to it.

The absolute hardest PC game I've ever played is probably just poorly designed. Maybe Blinky III, I dunno.

Something like the games I listed.

I like mostly strategy type games, but I find a lot of them to be to easy, such as CK2.

You're going to have a hard time getting something more complex than aurora. But quake probably stands at the peak as the most demanding game. Although you also need to have solid mechanical skills and it's more about quick decision making and practiced intuition than memorizing mechanics.

Spacechem.

If you don't want to use your brains then I'd suggest something like Dustforce or Cloudbuilt if you're into speedrunners.

Factorium.. kinda?

X3 is really difficult but more because there's a laughably bad "tutorial" and the main plot is broken. if you go in blind it's practically dorf fortress difficult but with a decent guide it's kind of easy.

Have you played roguelikes? Nethack, Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup, Angband, Ancient Domains of Mystery and the likes?

If you have played Dwarf Fortress, you most likely already know about these but it never hurts to ask.

 No.16054

I'm finally getting into some roguelikes and from the ones I tried Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is my favorite so far. The UI is good to the point of you not really needing the keyboard to do anything important.

I'm still trying to figure out how to take screenshots though, since the screencap button does not seem to work.

Any advice for someone who wants to try out Stone Soup?

Theres an in game tutorial. Anything you can't remember there's a button on the screen or you can read the in game manual as well.

Remember to look at enemies before you take them on.

At the current time, Factorio is sadly pretty easy.

It needs tougher enemies with more variety and more robust goals.

Couldn't you add mods to increase the difficulty?

I really wish I could make myself more patient and eliminate my ability to become frustrated. I can't handle hard vidya these days anymore, one little issue and I'm about to bite my tongue off in anger.

Titans of Steel: Warring Suns - it's an extremely detailed tactical turn based mech game.

And it's freeware now. Enjoy!

Baldur's Gate II (on core rules or above) is pretty tough if you havn't played it before. Extensive power- and metagaming makes the game easier but even with solid knowledge of the gameworld it's mechanics and some old fashioned cheesing it has some really tough encounters. It's available on GOG and Steam. I'd pick the Enhanced Edition.
