>one man to whole company
>company bought by Microsoft for $2 BILLION
>anyone under 30 who hasn't heard of it is living under a rock
can we really call this thing "indie" anymore?

9ea3da No.14409

It was fun for a bit to colonize land and artificially change the natural environment. And then build a castle.

I haven't played for months but the new updates keep adding neat stuff. Apparantly slime blocks that bounce stuff that they touch allow the creation of self propelling piston engines and actual fucking flying machines.

Okay, but can you call a $2 Billion Company with a huge work team "Indie"?
Also, i hope you pirated it

67f8cc No.14439

>>14437
Depends on what your definition of "indie" is.

They were independend but since they've been bought they aren't anymore.
The word has lost it's original meaning over the years, though. Seeing how EA and Ubisoft are talking about their "indie" studios I'm not sure if the word should be used anymore alltogether.

5ffcb0 No.14442

It definitely started indie, and I wouldn't say an indie game quits being indie on the off chance it gets big and successful. Now, when and if Notch makes another game, considering the resources he now has, that wouldn't be indie.

>>14409
>the new updates keep adding neat stuff

I'd call it the opposite, but I guess it's just a matter of what you actually want out of Minecraft. I was never much into the engineering aspect, but if that's your cup of tea, it's obviously a different story.

84bd7b No.14452

Love it or hate it, this is one of gaming's biggest success stories ever. This one game set Notch up for life.

9ea3da No.14460

>>14437
Of course I pirated it. My pirated version even can download new updates, which is really cool.

>>14442
What I wanted was more new blocks that looked pretty or could be used inventively in my castle. The new underwater things have a really nice blue/green block that would look great in my castle.

Yes, this. I love more flavor for creative mode.

It's a real shame that Notch is so damn lazy. He had the 0x10C game in the works for a while and the dropped it, and his shitty coding is at least part of the reason running a modded server is like pounding rusty nails into your dick.

I've got a lot of respect for him, but I can't help but wonder where Minecraft and Mojang would be in the hands of someone more capable..

Jesus fuck I just wish microsoft could remake the entire damn game in C++ now that they have it. Fuck java.

d38dbd No.14546

>>14519
For profit companies don't really do that unless they have a very good reason to do so.
Maybe they'd do it to port it to xbox and their VR stuff, but otherwise, redoing the whole thing is just a waste of time and money that Microsoft could be spending time and manpower on other stuff.

They know they can milk it anyway without porting it to C/C++

Posted this on /v/, got a bunch of autistic responses so posting it here.

After much reluctance, I finally updated my version of Minecraft to 1.8 from the aging 1.5.2. Cracked launcher of course, courtesy of TeamExtreme (whoever the fuck they are), but now I've come across a few unforeseen consequences:

>Girl protagonist with thinner arm models. At first I thought it was the Cracker's custom skin but it isn't. Every time I've loaded up a level I've got Alex. Is there anything that autolocks Steve onto my pre-existing levels?

>My version of MCEdit is even older than 1.5.2, and most of the level now appears as pink blocks, and to place them I have to manually enter the block ID. I tried downloading a newer version but it crashes everytime I loaded it up.

f6e2fd No.14692

No. It's not an indie game.

Yes. It was overpriced.

Yes. It was still worth MS buying.

Yes. It will become a Windows universal app made in C#.

Yes It will come to Windows Phone and their holographic headset.

9ea3da No.14694

I also made a plantation that is semi automated, once I plant everything by hand, I wait for it to grow and flip a switch and it collects every single crop in one chest for me. Takes about 5 minutes to plant everything and once I flip the switch to harvest I have enough food to last me in game years.

the best part is that this will improve the game tremendously

Pic related. My world spawned me in the middle of an ocean biome on three tiny islands. I terraformed them all back into the ocean and am in the process of creating my own artificial islands. Flipping the switch on either half of the plantation floods it and delivers all food into two locations.

>The programming wizards at 4J (Who made a really good port of Oblivion for PS3 because Bethesda can't into Cell processor) made a super optimized not Java version of Minecraft for consoles including the x86-based Xbox One & PS4

>That version will never be ported to PC

cf8854 No.14795

C# is a garbage collected language. like java. These shouldn't really be used for non turn-based games since when the GC goes off you get brief pauses while it tidies up.

Really, it needs a full re-write, that's the important thing. Any reasonable language would do.

There is an Xbox Minecraft and it's fully C++

a84577 No.15232

I've had this game since it was starting to get the attention of YouTubers (back when they had Classic pre-alpha for free). I've had a ton of fun with the game, but then they started removing the stuff I enjoyed most: mob farms and other farms, water ladders, minecart boosters. So, I stopped around the time the Nether was added, it just wasn't the same without those glitches and farms. Should I check it out again?

151229 No.15333

The funny thing is that after the aquistion of Mojang Minecraft pretty much died, I have heard nothing on it in ages, if a Nintendo version came out before Microsoft bought Minecraft, it may still be alive but hope is lost

I don't have it anymore but back when Minecraft was still in Alpha the guys who made minercpp made a C++ client as well. It worked like a dream.
