This game is a masterpiece.

>Might and Magic universe background/story

>simple but deep battle system with many options
>all sorts of shit is viable, you can run in slaughtering everything or ghost through a level
>kick guards off rooftop
>kick guards into fire
>kick guards into water

>kicking is the greatest game mechanic ever created

I just got to the island. Does it just keep getting better? And is the lady in my head a succubus or something? She seems to be some sort of demon or familiar. Why is she constantly talking in innuendo and lewd tones to me?

I came in knowing absolutely nothing besides it's in the M&M universe and looked like a very dated game.

The combat system is really good, you have lots of options. So far I've been using fire trap in tandem with a stealthy style because I got my shit pushed in trying to fight in melee at first.

It's divided into chapters and each one is a really nice chunk of gameplay. One of them I had to chase a ghoul across the rooftops and it was intense, then later I was sneaking through a ship to kill all of the crew.

There's some really neat things like being able to forge your own sword at one point by following blacksmithing instructions I thought was cool.

There are no waypoints or hand holding from what I've seen, you literally just have a list of objectives and you need to go figure it out on your own.

This is the best game I've pirated in a while, it's definitely worth playing.

ca855a No.1535

>>1534
For combat, you have access to an array of different melee/ranged weapons, spells, kicking, and there are usually traps everywhere in levels you can hurt enemies with. There's a minimalistic skill tree to spend points in melee, magic, or misc stats.

You can also throw stuff like barrels to hurt enemies, and when you're fighting in combat you have an adrenaline bar that fills up and when it's full your attacks will be extra damaging and do more complex finishing moves.

> She seems to be some sort of demon or familiar. Why is she constantly talking in innuendo and lewd tones to me?

Anon, just remember to always trust your Dad's advice.

Also remember that she's the ultimate waifu and whats-her-face mage is a slut who's playing baby to manipulate you. You should know this. You should know that you do not trust the real woman, trust the waifu in your head. Your waifu knows you. Your waifu just wants to make you happy.

Also, actual spoilers ahead: She became a succubus after, if I remember right, being deceived by her husband, wanting revenge and murdering that clown. I don't think the game ever blatantly tells you that. Well other than her being a succubus. Apparently she's the only succubus who won't lie, but she's probably got an agenda of wanting to bear the children of a demon lord. But hell, she does seem to genuinely want the best for that demon lord since it would be the best for her. And now she's stuck in your brain cage, so might as well trust her. And maybe let her touch your junk.

Honestly, I've got nothing else to add. You hit the nail on the head, the amazing combat is what made this game. So much so that I remember for a while that people were hyped when the rumor was Skyrim had people from this game working on it. Shame that this game never got a sequel, but hell I didn't play it when it came out. A lot of people didn't I guess and it got meh reviews.

I never liked stealth games though so I never tried to be sneaky, still very replay-able. Wish spiked walls didn't exist since that seems to be the effective way to get through harder difficulties. I mean, sure, you get better at the combat, but the walls are there and your boot is too mighty.

One of the few games i actually played through more than once. Sadly due to the source engine this game was made with, the levels were pretty small, so there were too much of "loading level" like in half life 2, but other than that this game was pretty great. They should make another one of these but this time a bit larger, more "rpg" like with some optional quests and more items, adding more content. Gameplaywise its nearly perfect though.

71c7b0 No.1977

I just finished it with the ending for taking the skull myself.

Xana is perfect, I killed Leanna in cold blood when I found out she would be in the way of Xana with me.

I'm not sure if I wasn't doing the right build or just didn't grasp melee combat through the game, but the ghouls in the return to stonehelm literally 1-2 shotted me from 70 health every time, I had to reload through that area constantly. I was on hard difficulty though. Other than that, the island and necropolis were fucking perfect. Really enjoyable game, I played a spellsword playstyle, next time I come back to it I'll focus entirely on stealth + melee.

You disobeyed her and she tries to kill you. Whore

>>1980
Yeah, its kinda lame. Something like God of War's power up modes would have been better, where you're still doing the same stuff but better. Maybe uncreative, but when you're sitting on a great combat system, you don't benefit by taking it away and replacing it with demon tail. Maybe it was just me, but I never got a good feel for its range either.

Plus with the kinda swords you can pick up if you explore around a little bit I'm certain I did more damage and without having to drain my health. I don't care if killing stuff regenerates it, that stuff punches my face in and I don't feel like risking it all when I had good gear to begin with.

5bb705 No.2043

This was like the first third-party game I ever added to Steam. I think I still have the discs, though. Absolutely worth buying on launch back then. I remember playing the holy fuck out of the demo and while some of the areas kinda suck, the sheer joy you get playing that level with the cliffside staircases just makes it all worth it.

Tried the multiplayer briefly around launch but never sunk my teeth into it. Didn't have a lot of people playing it but it was honestly pretty fun. Of course not nearly as fun as kicking fucking everything, but still.

>>1977
>>1980

The demon mode is absolutely useless. Makes you wonder why they left it in. Maybe the original idea was too powerful and made the game trivially easy so they hit it with the nerf bat until it was useless. Plus it's not kicking, so it's not fun to use.

One thing that didn't impress me upon announce of the game is that I recognized 2 of the exact same animations from Dead Island in 2 of the enemies. But that was beta stage development, maybe they've changed that. The design doesn't seem that tight but it might be good, I don't know.

Basically, yes.

Dark Messiah is like a fine wine. The more you replay the game the more you appreciate just how fucking good it is.

Also, great antagonist. Especially when you consider how the different endings frame his actions throughout the game.

>>1977
Ghouls are basically just really powerful. They have high damage, they're good at slipping past your block, and they have a lot of health.

71c7b0 No.2242

>>2239
was Arantir or Kha-Beleth supposed to be the antagonist? they both seemed evil

832d1e No.2247

>>2242
Kha-Beleth was the "villain", I guess, although Arantir was the main antagonist. Arantir seems like a villain if you locked Kha-Beleth away, since after all, Arantir was hindering you from getting your job done and on top of that was going to kill thousands of innocent people to seal away Kha-Beleth when you could do it with no loss of innocent life.

But consider the following: if you release Kha-Beleth, then everything Arantir did was justified, including killing you. After all, before you killed him, he had everything in place to seal the prison properly, so clearly he did have the means to get shit done, and your killing him and releasing Kha-Beleth makes you the good guy and him the bad guy.

Now think about how Arantir had no way of knowing whether you'd imprison or release Kha-Beleth but believed it was more likely you'd release him (based on the prophecy), and you realize that Arantir was acting with the best of intentions, trying to do a good thing with the best means he had available. If you release Kha-Beleth then Arantir is proven right; if you imprison Kha-Beleth then Arantir was wrong but still doing the right thing from his perspective.

>your killing him and releasing Kha-Beleth makes you the good guy and him the bad guy.
Whoops, other way around.

71c7b0 No.2252

>>2249
After the twist I felt like the bad guy. The demons getting out and running freely would have been bad, and Arantir clearly had good intentions, yeah. Even somewhere in the game I recall a necromancer saying necromancy isn't really a bad thing, it's just a different look on life. But the methods they used are clearly bad, so really it was a lesser of two evils situation. Necromancers being neutral evil and demons being chaotic evil.

But what neither Arantir or Kha-Beleth took into consideration was the power of a waifu.

I know this game is made for kicking, setting traps and being "the dickass thief", but is it at all decent for magic-only builds?

All the talk surrounding this game back in the day was "linear Oblivion with better combat" which I know wasn't true.

86150d No.3181

>>3179
>I know this game is made for kicking, setting traps and being "the dickass thief"
Actually as a stealth game it's kind of lacking. True, it does have stealth, and it is simulationist (albeit crude), but there's nothing to steal and you're forced to use lethal kills, so for playing a thief it's extremely poor. Decent assassin game though, especially paired with archery for instant-death headshots pinning people to walls.

>but is it at all decent for magic-only builds?

Yes and no. On normal difficulty you'll have a lot of energy problems and will be drinking mana potions constantly (fortunately the game throws a fuckton of them at you) until you get upgrades that let you get your mana regen rate up. Strongly recommend buying the first Mana Affinity skill asap because without it every mana potion you drink is wasting 20-30 points.

Offensive magic has the problem of not dealing all that impressive damage given its resource cost (mana) and of leaving you open to attacks from ghouls and vampire knights, since you don't have a weapon out and can't block. It does get pretty lethal later on, although you do also face more ghouls later on, and if you're dousing everyone in flames it can be hard to see a ghoul running up to one-shot you.

Defensive magic is much more powerful. For starters Telekinesis when paired with a rock or a bundle of hay (for some reason) will instantly kill most enemies. This sounds nice except that you run out of rocks when you start facing the undead and are then forced to find other means of killing. For the defensive mage this is usually a staff, as you'll have access to the Soulreaver Staff reasonably early on, which requires Mana Affinity (which you'll have anyways), the combat staves only require 1-3 points invested in Melee Combat (which you'll probably invest in anyways just because it turns staves into brokenly good weapons that give you extreme control over the battle), and the endgame Leanna path staff also uses Mana Affinity and is pretty good.

Expanding on Defensive magic, it has a strong healing spell that most combat classes spec into anyways, it has a spell that makes enemies fight each other which is sometimes useful, and it has the extremely powerful Sanctuary spell that makes you invincible for (20 seconds?) at a high mana cost, but since you have so many potions this isn't a problem. Later in the game you'll have the Soulreaver Staff plus Mana Regen if you want it, so you'll be able to keep Sanctuary on all the time. Before that point in the game (and you reach that point pretty early anyways) you can just kill everything fast with Telekinesis or use Sanctuary and drink potions.

Looking at Hardcore mode we see Offensive magic fall to the point of uselessness because it takes forever to kill anything and you will run out of mana potions. Defensive magic on the other hand becomes the best option in the game altogether, even (arguably) better or at least easier than the melee option of using the lightning shield for easy kills/shutdown.

So I would say it can be decent or awful or awesome depending on what kind of mage you want to play and what difficulty. All in all it's certainly lacking in variety of spells and if you want a good mage game by the same developer, try Arx Fatalis, to which Dark Messiah was something of a spiritual successor. Be warned though that it is a much more hardcore game. You have to cook food and eat, and the levels are sprawling and easy to get lost in. And you have to draw your spells' component runes by hand on the screen, and the game hates you and demands you draw it perfectly.

I'd still recommend Dark Messiah but be warned that playing a mage makes it a lot harder. I wouldn't recommend playing mage your first time through, although that is what I did.

Quick Reply seems to be broken on /svidya/ and this really pisses me off.

81cf64 No.3217

>>3181
You didn't mention the Ice Spell, which is arguably your most effective defensive spell

Placed right it can KD everything for you to finish off and build up adrenaline
And Charm is extremely useful as enemies will usually attack whatever is closest to them
Also if there are oil flasks about then you can instakill anything (save for a troll duh) if you throw it at the ground and cast fire trap over it

86150d No.3221

>>3217
The ice spell is nice, yeah, (godly in places where you can just pop one down and have a bunch of enemies run at you and all slip off a cliff) but you could just invest in a bit of Melee Combat with a staff and basically accomplish the same thing. Staves have high chances for knockdown and stun. Their charge attack, if you hit properly, will always stun and knockdown. With good practice you can often stun a bunch of enemies in the first half of the power attack, and then knock one of them down, then do another power attack and with correct screen swing knock all the others down as well (since a power attack on a stunned enemy knocks them down).

Battlemage stronk.

Also, fun fact concerning fire: if you light something on fire, say a barrel, and use telekinesis to hold it up against an enemy, they catch on fire, which kills them almost immediately (actually they start death animation immediately, so puts them out of play anyways). This is risky on Hardcore or against enemies that can kill you really fast, unless you have Sanctuary, but it is a useful tool sometimes.

Source Engine can look really nice sometimes, yeah. HL2 showcases this pretty well with nice-looking textures on simple but crisp models. Even if it doesn't have all kinds of fancy layers of light simulating stuff like other engines, it makes up for that by also not having some of their garishness and just showing what it does show nicely.

Also, dat glass distortion and water. Dark Messiah makes good use of those.

Lighting as well. Simple but pretty.

I actually liked using the demon mode because it triggered my AvP2 memores. And for roleplaying reasons. I think it would be better if your life wasn't constantly draining, though. Someone should post that Bloodlines how-to image. I don't have it saved.

If you want a similar game, I would actually recommend the GoG version of Enclave (there were some people who mentioned having trouble with the Steam version), an action-adventure game made by Starbreeze Studios. It was their first game under that name, actually, and they went on to make the Chronicles of Riddick games among others.

The best way I can describe it is to think of Enclave as playing an entire party of D&D characters against the GM, who is usually a pretty decent guy but goddamn is he a stickler for the rules and critical hits. It's third-person primarily, but you can switch to first-person at any time. There is a focus on melee combat, but ranged options like archers and wizards are viable (more powerful at higher levels, as well).

The hitboxes for weapons and shields are 1:1, meaning that a character's walking animations can affect the area a shield covers, and positioning is important. Critical hits (headshots) are in effect for both you and your enemies, so if you take a stray arrow to the head, you're fucking dead, go back to the checkpoint. It's a very unforgiving game, but full of goofy bullshit like Dark Messiah. In the light campaign you start out as a prisoner fighting your way out of a castle under attack by bad guys, and end up travelling across the seas via airship to enlist the aid of definitely-not-Romans to fight the orc hordes and kill the king of demons. Along the way you unlock items and characters, which you can outfit before each mission.

The level design is also very intricate - you get a certain amount of gold for completing a level, but you can pick up more in hidden spots or from killing enemies. You constantly have new things thrown at you, too, like the level where you have to rescue a merchant from a town on the border of good guy territory.
>start out walking through the streets, killing orcs
>go into people's houses since the other ways are blocked
>fighting your way across rooftops, dodging arrows
>find the merchant
>lead him back through the streets
>as you near the exit, a bugbear jumps out at you from what you through was a harmless sewer
>holy shit it's really tough and actually pretty scary

>at one point you're fighting in a coastal town, dodging cannon fire from an offshore ship

>at another point you have to pick your way through a medieval winchester mansion which is literally traps from top to bottom

Can't recommend it enough. A true hidden gem; I have not seen anyone on /v/ ever talk about it.

Reading comprehension is heretical.

He didn't say it wasn't good: he said it being good wasn't the primary reason it influenced the industry.

Like many anon here I've heard about this game for a long time before actually trying it out. Pirated, started my first playthrough as a spellsword on hard. Right off I played it for like 8 hours straight, by the time I got to the island/temple my heart was on fire, I knew this game is the hottest shit I've played since forever.

But I haven't finished it then, this thread got me pumped up again, starting my mage playthrough right fucking now.

Not to mention

>freeze the ground and let orcs slip on ice and fall to their deaths

>kill enemies via chandeliers

And just in general, implementation of physics. Man, I wish Havok was used more, it just makes combat so fun. Rarely even see any object physics in games anymore.

So I finished this 2 times now, first one killed Leanna second one not. This game is a shadow of what it could have been. The endings are the pretty much only bad things about that game. Weak as fuck.

-"Im tired of orc tunnels, arent you ?" YES I AM.

-This game has a insanely Thiefy feeling to it, someone needs to mod water arrows into it and you'd be Garret the Assassin.

-Not enough duels like the one with the Orc Shaman.

-Lovely crafted levels (The temple and the Necropolis shine especially) but way too small.

-I want more of everything. More sexy (and fun as fuck) Xana dialog; Daillly Moon did a A job at it, more fighting, more sneaking, more levels, actual towns to just roam around, more enemies, MORE MORE MORE

If I'd win the lottery I'd just throw the money at the devs to overhaul that game and then make a glorious sequel about Sareth and Xana take on the world together.

"And thats how you build your first army, my dear" THEN LEMME USE IT FOR GODS SAKE!

Great game, bittersweet taste after finishing.

-fucking spiders

I have no experience with the Might & Magic universe, will I still enjoy this game, or are there other things I should look into first to get some background information?

I haven't played the actual M&M games, but I love HOMM (3). It shares lore and you would probably see it a lot better if you played Heroes first, but I feel like it was pretty good at being self contained.

It takes place in Ashan which is a new world and doesnt really resemble anything from Might and Magic prior, except races.

The game features nearly no lore, anyways. Youll be fine.

the lore it DOES feature is unimaginative to the core, best part about it are the Kings buried in the Necropolis and thats only a tiny bit of it all. The books you are given to read about stuff are not even halfassed and fuck that Seventh Dragon shit
