/svidya/ is a strict /v/ alternative for moderated vidya discussion. This Board wasn't intended to replace /v/ but to aid Anon's in having vidya discussions with zero shitposters. Thanks for adding /svidya/ to /v/'s recommended boards, Mark.

I keep thinking we need to start a Gamergays-like initiative to get parents to notice game ratings. Most of them would care but don't notice, it's not usually "whatever kid as long as you get out of my face". The ESRB does a shit job at it. Here are some benefits

>gets squealers out of popular servers

>helps kids grow up properly

>eventually the starvation of kool kid gamez makes what i like to call squealer culture (peer pressure) die of starvation, like a macho guy deciding they're a trans woman and having to drop the macho eventually, ensuring this never happens again

>above also ensures kids with responsible parenting don't feel peer pressure

>>>gets squealers out of mandatory systems with no block or kick, like xbl and psn

So who's up? I am fucking ready.

The best thing to do in avoiding squealers in games would be stricter ESRB regulations for purchasing games and playing online. The reason this so far is failing is because you can only regulate and police games so far before it starts effecting the profits for the companies involved, and it still won't prevent apathetic parents from letting their kids play M rated games and using online features.

A better use of our time and effort would be getting rid of the ESRB system entirely. They're just as retarded and ineffective in their intended goal as the MPAA for movies. In the end the only thing either rating system does is make it harder and more costly for content producers to make their work available.

Let people have their games. Let the parents be the ones to keep their kids from playing games. Let squealers get bullied and fucked up in the head. Let nature run its course.

The MPAA is retarded? I don't understand. I think they do a pretty good job except for any swearing being an insta-R when some movies that drop the f-bomb could probably pass with a PG even if a bunch of retarded parents freak out. Is there something I'm missing?

I agree with you in the "let the free market handle it!11!!" regard, but this is kind of a social initiative to minimize squealerism. It will always exist but a lot of parents (ie. the "ARE YOU WINNING, SON?" dad) are completely oblivious and don't have the time to learn more although they do care. This initiative would just put the most basic info in their faces. The ESRB can go, but I feel like we should still have content labelling even if the letters can go. Maybe even publisher-provided age recommendations.

Also, make everything more online integrated. Remember that Xbox One "discs are just keys for digital games" shit? Sort of do that. Have the age or whatever fuck coded into the game and make it verify your age with what the game needs so the console won't play M games if you're not old enough.

Actually, I feel like we could do with two classifications considering how tame most T shit is. Just "general audiences" and "mature audiences". And reduce M to like, 14+ or so.

The problem with this is that it basically begs for government oversight into an industry that could literally be torn apart by such a thing, depending on who is in charge and what they want to oversee. This could turn into another Hillary Clinton fiasco over violent video games or a bunch of Republicans disliking a Japanese game for its religious symbolism etc. I think the squeelers are just part of what is essentially the culture of video games as it relates to parenting. And the only solution to that is just better parenting.

Maybe the comparison to Gay Gays wasn't so apt because I don't think issuing any demands would be a good idea. It would just be a thing to raise awareness of the rating system since the ESRB tries but is so shit at doing the same thing.

What I meant was content producers, be it movies or video games, face a broad-spectrum approach from ESRB and MPAA both, which forces the developers to change their work to ensure it'll be available to a wider audience. A game's ESRB rating heavily changes the marketability of a game. Some companies won't carry a game in their stores over a certain rating threshold. An ESRB rating can also effect your budget and costs when it comes to the company acting as producer and the potential for advertising. None of this has anything to do with how young the audience of your game is, but all of it is directly effected by the rating your game receives.

I understand your intention with something less "let's make demands and boycott!" and more "let's rally support and ask for awareness of a problem." I can totally get behind that. I think, however, anything involving game regulation won't really change the prevalence of squealers.

A good example of why bringing ESRB into this mix rather than attempting to bring about a change outside and around the ESRB system. Otherwise, you get kneejerks like this.

There is a good and a bad

Good

>Nintendo Sales will go up

>Call of Duty Sales will go down

Bad

>Nintendo fans will get more hate about playing "Kids" games, when they play them because they are great
