>sidescroller
It's not a good example of a sidescroller. It feels like it was made in a top-down game engine like RPG Maker, but only given 2D environments. There are inputs for walking North and South that do nothing except turn your sprite, because your character moves on a flat plane. I can say that it is easily one of the worst games I've ever played in terms of gameplay, atmosphere, graphics and originality. That said, I gave up before finishing it, which is rare for me to do, even with a bad game. Maybe it gets much better towards the end.
>tasteful pixel graphics
Lazily scaled-down sprites, ugly lighting effects that clash with the low-resolution art, and an aesthetic shamelessly ripped from Silent Hill, right down to the static noise that the faceless zombies make.
It becomes a clunky shooter after the first five minutes, when it gives you a gun with plenty of ammo and throws hordes of non-threatening enemies at you. It's not easy, but it is boring and it utterly fails to build suspense beyond the initial stealth sections (which end after the first level, when you find a gun). Most of the scares come in the form of loud noises. The zombies feel like they should be frightening, but they are so weak and ineffective that they're not an issue. The survival aspect is virtually non-existent beyond a mild tedium, because like ammo, food is anything but scarce.
To top it all off, the game's attempts to be artistically meaningful made me cringe. The creator is obviously a fan of David Lynch, but their efforts at creating surreal characters and foreboding dream sequences are transparent and clichéd, resulting in long, boring cutscenes with cheesy dialogue.
These are just my opinions. Go ahead and buy it if you really, really like games of this sort. Play the demo first, because purchasing this without trying it out gave me a serious case of buyer's remorse.
