What kind of bosses do you guys like to fight in games? I always tend to heavily enjoy bosses which are quite similar to the player or have a players move set but uses it in a different way that the player hasn't seen before in a 1v1 duel. Its just so satisfying to see the boss use your moves in a different way.

I also do enjoy fighting against a previous game's main character since I played with the character before and I just find it interesting to fight against him.

Scrolling shooters get all the best bosses. Huge, exciting bosses with cool attacks and lots of parts to blow off or extra forms. Those are my favorites.

To be honest I tend to believe that player clone duels are usually pretty bad. They're always quite limited based on what the player can do and have to rely on compelling AI, which isn't necessarily compelling game design.

Its quite difficult to describe properly why I enjoy them though it is true that a good number of the actual fights are disappointing (Copy X, Zero). There's just something satisfying fighting against a character which as similar moves. I can't describe it fully but its just a neat little thing to look forward to.

Funny enough I was just about to post how much I love these types of bosses. They're always hype as shit for me. Generally if they can respond to button inputs in a fast way, like Dark Link was able to do, it's very fun. I think I just have a weakness for those types of fights as it stands. Even if they don't have compelling AI, as long as they have the same abilities and use them against you, it's damn fun. Games don't have to have super great AI that counters your moves with your own moves to make good instantces of it, though I think when they can it becomes Boss of the Year for me.

Dark Knight Cecil in FFIV is a good example of a 'clone duel' type that I was talking about that doesn't need AI. As long as it's something that really shows how much of a badass the MC is, it gives you more appreciate for playing them by fighting something with the same abilities. These are always my favorite boss battles in any game, regardless of the genre.

Bosses that are several magnitudes larger than me. Preferrably, ones that dwarf me so much that I can climb them and fighting the boss is more of attacking the smallest areas of him to make him weaken and fall.

I will never forget the Guardian fight in darksiders 2.

I think it's partly the feeling of fighting somebody on about an equal level as you. It's not a battle over who has the biggest sword. It's a battle over who can use it better.

These player-sized shinobi shitheads are some of the most infuriating and least satisfying bosses in this series otherwise full of great bosses.

I fucking love player clone duels. They feel like an excellent test of your abilities, because you're certainly fighting an opponent on a level playing field to yourself.

Based on that I don't think you really like those bosses, you just like every game to have one.

As a game design standpoint it's pretty weak to try and make all of them like that. That's ultimately because your player character is essentially still just one character with one balanced moveset, so copying that repeatedly is just more of the same. Upgrades might change it up a bit, but then again I also like to have all abilities from the start and only feeling powerful from learning how to use them.

>Omega Zero was a disappointing fight? I didn't think so. He's fast, frenetic, regenerates his health, and is a much better fight than Copy X or previous iterations of Zero fights in X2 and X5. Bastard's even worse in ZX.

More on topic, it would've been neat to have a legit X vs X clone fight, with the latter having access to a shitload of weapons and armors while you only have either one set of each or neither. Shit would've been so cash, and a lot better than the repetitive borefest of fighting Zero again and again with the same attack pattern.

A solid clone fight is good, but I love massive enemies, either in shooters or sidescrollers. I'd rather they not be pushovers like the first boss in X2 or even that prisoner character in Z4.

Is there a platformer player clone duel without some variation of this hilarious AI exploit? It's hilarious how many games I've found it in at this point.

Can we get video of that, or some more examples?

I think I remember the Dark Link fight in Adventure of Link being exploitable by crouching in a corner and constantly jabbing.

I agree and I also think its quite disappointing that Copy X was nothing but a joke. It would've been more interesting if he was the main antagonist of the Zero series and he grows as the game progresses.

OP, you pretty much summarized my thoughts regarding the matter as well. Its too bad that that sort of thing isn't implemented very often.
