Where do you guys see RTS games going in the next 5 years?

We've had a small revival in 2014 and I hope that it continues, with games like 0 A.D., Grey Goo, and Etherium

7759a5 No.16496

Most likely HD remakes for most classic titles until someone brings out something innovative and/or just generally good. That was the problem with Grey Goo in that it didn't do anything really new or interesting and wasn't particularly that great.

We might see a 40k RTS from Relic actually considering that SEGA seems intent on both using and supporting the developer and their products. So hopefully we'll see Dawn of War 3 and/or maybe Company of Heroes 3. Though the issue with those franchises was that they were basically turning (or turned) themselves into RTT games or MOBA's.

Trying now to think about what series are still RTS games still being made?

>Total War

>Wargame

Not a good list is it?

Dawn of War 3 was at some stage of development before THQ went bust, but who knows if Sega will continue with it. They rushed COH2 right out the door, and that was already a desperate rush job to try and help keep THQ afloat.

Considering they updated and relaunched the website for Space Marine (which was a surprising move in itself) there may be some hope yet.

Grey Goo was a complete joke imo, i expected much more out of it.

Thank god some of those HD remakes are bringing back a community to them,

There's nothing wrong with playing Supreme Commander and Age of Mythology for the rest of your life.

Has 0AD had much development recently? It's looking promising but lacks polish.

The latest build is Alpha 18, released march 13th. Game is very very well made but obviously given that it's a volunteer project, it's going to take years. Still has the lag bug with multiple units but it's trucking along.

I for one have been extremely interested in seeing where a game like Factorio could go as an RTS.

The developers have had thoughts about how to take versus mode development in that direction for a while, and I personally think the idea of an RTS where you control a singular character but automate processes from scratch until you're able to create and outfit robotic troops from a command center would be immensely interesting.

Was the gameplay of the grey goo itself not new? What did that before?

I know it's not the topic, but is Total War: Medieval any good?

It's pretty obvious we're gonna get a new Relic 40K. It's instant dosh for Sega. It will be interesting if they use dawn of war or put it under "Total War". Sega say they won't be at E3 as an exhibitor but I wouldn't be surprised if Relic's new game was announced at a conference.

There's also those mysterious Microsoft RTS hiring and a new studio for RTS called Decisive Games with a lot of the old Ensemble and Big Huge Games vets and they have. The question is, is it Halo Wars 2, Age Of Empires IV, a Rise Of Nations reboot or something completely different.

I honestly wouldn't hold my breath. Probably be console only or forced onto their replacement for GFWL making it unplayable. Or they'll make a MOBA.

Trying to think, anything good in the pipeline coming out RTS wise? The only thing I can think of is OpenRA and that's frankly just sad.

10/10 Go get it now

I'd love to see this come out as a thing where you build bots and bases as yourself.

It was very bland and didn't really add anything and the gameplay was extremely rush oriented

Age of Empires 2 had an HD remake on Steam a year ago, they even released an expansion pack (first one in 13 years!) made by fans. AND theyre working on another one due out later this year. If anything the age community has been revived. A dude even made a board on 8chan about it >>>/aoe/

Are you talking about Grey Goo or TW:M?

I was referring to Grey Goo

TW:M was an amazing game and probably my favorite out of the Total War series

And maybe a real sequel to Dawn of War, but I neither do I bet on this.

Sounds like Dune 2. Have they been playing it safe or something?

sadlt rts is almost dead more than almost and gsg are the one going the near with them…..and also that style is going casual shit

I think the salvation of RTSs is a merge with games like DF, castle story, towns, and so on.

They can get pretty good ideas from this genre that has been booming recently. Modifiable terrain, custom buildings, mining, etc.

I hated what many companies tried to do by transforming RTS games into online games like AOE online, stonghold online, etc. But apparently none of them was succesful so luckly they'll give up on this idea.

The problem is that RTS games have gone heavily gookclick style in the past few years, where the game relies far less on actual strategy and more on unit management and sheer rapidity of actions. Meanwhile, both Total War and GS games have gone to shit chasing the mythical casual audience.

The only way I can see RTS as a genre experiencing revival is if more games like Wargame came out, where battles are relatively slow, positioning is immensely important, and strategy actually matters. Sadly Wargame is very niche and Eugene don't quite understand how to hold on to a large multiplayer base.

This right here. I remember games such as stronghold and tropico coming out in late 90s and early 2000's.

The thing with these games is that they go right for the middle way between an all numbers & statistics like SimCity 4 and a game where everything is manageable individually, such ass typical RTS. In Stronghold there are some thing you just can't command, such as your civilian units.

The idea of a game like Tropico back in 2001 was precisely to explore this new option of management games because the hardware allowed. You don't control you units individually like in an RTS, but they're not jsut numbers in your statistics like in SimCtiy either.
