Welcome one and all to the Smash Brothers thread for /svidya/!

I'd like for this thread to be used to discuss all games of the franchise (including mods such as, but not limited to, Project M and Brawl Minus) I'd like for civil discussion to happen here without bullshit like ">LIKING A MOD" or ">SM4SH >NOT PM"

I think it'd be easiest to start off the thread by asking…
Who's your main and why?

I've played only 64, Gamceube with a bit of the Wii version so my opinion is limited. And I also only play with my friends so I'm not a competetive player.

Pikachu is my main with the wizard hat. All day, every day.

Cool, Cool!
I was playing Smash 4 with a couple of my friends at a local Barnes & Noble and he decided to bring out wizard/party hat Pikachu. We were playing with items on and he got a lucky 3 Assist-Trophies in a row while he would knock me off the stage.

His magical Pika Powers showed me what for.

Hotwheels ate my post or something.

My main's Mega Man. And it's just because I've loved his games for so long, it's easily one of my favorite franchises. When he was announced for Smash, it was the best news he'd gotten in years, easy.

Didn't even matter about his tournament viability, I picked him because I love the character, and I think that should take precedence over anything else when picking a main in a crossover fighting game like Smash.

Outside of Mega, I used to main DK in 64 and Melee. Didn't play much of Brawl outside of a few matches at a friends house, where I just enjoyed the novelty of playing Sonic, going Super Sonic and getting an easy win while telling everyone that they're too slow.

Mega Man is very fun. He feels and plays exactly how I hoped for him to. That said I still suck with him lol. Not really that great with Newcomers because I've been busy perfecting my veteran mains (Ness and Mario).
When I bite the dust with them. I want to get better with Mega Man, Shulk, and Especially Pac-Man.
Has anyone fought any good Pac-Man's on For Glory? I really want to believe he has potential I have not yet tapped.

I don't think I'm a pro with Pac, but he's damn easy and fun to use. His side specials are wonderful, his tilts are godly, and his air game while short range is nothing to snuff at. When a friend played Jigglypuff I kept him juggled for a solid half minute or so.

I was pretty skeptical when he was announced, but he easily has one of the best movesets in Smash, and he's just plain fun to play.

If this double posts due to server shenanigans, I will be mildly upset.

In Melee and Project M, it has to be Captain Falcon. He runs fast, jumps far, and hits hard. He feels so good, so natural. When I'm not spamming the short- hop- dair, I can consistently high jump, que knee, and fastfall into the sweetspot. Whump. He's, uh, he's a lot of fun to play.

I want to main NESS to represent my favorite video game, but his style is a little more patient. Okay.

DK, Sonic, Snake, Mario, Link, and Yoshi are pretty good too, but everyone's viable in Project M.

In Smash 4, I keep switching. I can't falcon due to the ever- so- slight online lag. Every character feels pretty stiff, so I play more for fun and use new characters such as MEGA MAN, Villager, and Little Mac. Whether I'm shooting lemons, pecking slingshots, or perfectly timing a heavy dash attack, I feel more giddy and silly in this one.

I can't hit hard enough to KO effectively with Wii Fit Trainer and Duck Hunt. I hate the fact that in Sm4sh certain moves will never ever KO, and others will at 60%.

Nice, I wish I had the tech skill to play PM more consistently, I'm working on it. I realized I'm pretty shit at 3ds smash so I kind of gave up on it. I'll get back into it on Wii U when I get it.

26f1fb No.1700

>>1697
There is a huge difference in Project M between playing against computers and real players. I never had the feel for P: M down until I started regularly playing with other people.

The only tech skills you really need to get down are short hops, occasionally L- Cancels which you'll get in time if you use a heavy character(Bowser is great practice), and actually using your shield and grabs. You'll do fine. Just cut yourself some slack against the CPU's; they're brutal when they don't self destruct.

I'd like to call positioning a technique, but it's more planning and running around such that you're out of range of their moves and they're in range of yours than actual inputs. It comes with time. I honestly recommend watching a bunch of high- level Smash gifs or videos occasionally for a long time, because I think that did it.

In order to not become "that guy", you must remember that you're playing this for fun first and everything else second. Always remember that.

I don't know, If I'm being frank I'm just bad at smash. Maybe that'll get better with time. I can always shop ff, I need to work on the l cancel, and then it's on to wavedashes, after that I'll probably mess around with the ladder but I don't know. Considering how trash I am at Smash 4 I don't know if I'll be good at PM anyway. S4 is supposed to be more casual, but I get rekt by most people.

26f1fb No.1702

>>1701
Maybe I'm not that good yet, but I don't think that wave dashing is necessary. And if it's intimidating you, then disregard it. If someone's wavedashing in front of you, just play defensively. I've beaten a spastic Fox in Melee as DK by simply staying calm. You can play the game or don't, as long as you're having a good time.

You can do it on Wii or you can do it through Dolphin the emulator. If your PC is strong enough, the former is easier. If the latter is necessary, I'll explain it in a minute, let me figure it out. I have a hacked wii but IIRC you can do it with an unsoftmodded Wii. Give me a second.

People can usually give you very limited information considering just how different the newer Smash games are.

Smash 4 and Brawl both changed the game for a more friendly-fun environment for players and their friends even going to the point where a mode dedicated to 8 players was included. This means, of course, stocks take a bit longer to be taken off (half a minute or so) and combos are scarce if not simple 2 hit combos. Advanced techniques which gave people quicker movement options such as Wavedashing and L-Cancelling have been taken out as well. Momentum carried from jumps has been taken out for the sake of slow and heavy characters who were gimped otherwise if hit off-stage. The games have a lower skill ceiling but they aren't exactly "un-playable" as many people like to yell out. They're still fun and if anything, the added characters, music, stages, items, and overall content add to the games' quality over the years.

Yeah. In a way it's interesting how insane the changes are. Personally I think Smash 4's engine is the absolute smoothest and the only issue I have with it is the sheer length opponents fly away which, in result, doesn't allow for longer combos. Other than that I'd say Smash 4 feels extremely smooth, but that's probably because I'm more used to the frame data of Sm4sh as opposed to PM/Melee. I also enjoy how I can stay alive for longer than 30 seconds because I felt stocks in Melee went by too fast not allowing for an adequate amount of play time.

That being said, I do think the removal of advanced playing options leads to a large disadvantage to the Smash series. I'm don't hate Sakurai, in fact I much respect the man and his hard work ethic, but I really don't agree with his viewpoint of making the skill floor and skill ceiling so low.

In any case, when it comes to your Wii U, I don't think Smash is a game that you'll be playing often if you don't have friends around, so I think you should find some single player titles that you're interested in for the Wii U. I'd give a few but I'm afraid this thread will go off topic.

If you're stuck with the 3DS version then I honestly feel a little bad for you because god damn, the 3DS version is actually pretty bad compared to the Wii U version. I don't think Wii U's music selection is better (when it comes to Megaman ;_;) but the sheer size and range of remixes for other franchises is absolutely amazing. From Showa-Era Dedede to French-Piano Champion Cynthia; I honestly think Smash 4's Soundtrack is the best to date. I just wish they had more orchestrated pieces like Melee.

If you ever get bored I'd definitely recommend hunting down some custom moves and experimenting with them because holy shit they add a whole new spice to the game that I didn't think would be possible. A lot of custom moves have effects that items have, like Luigi's Ice-Fireball where instead of burning and damaging it freezes and allows you to run in with an attack of some sort. I hope you enjoy your time with the new Smash, anon.

Then I began following the competitive folks, and found Project M. Can play about half the cast, favoring Captain Falcon and Mewtwo. Having gratuitous amount of fun. I know how you feel. I started regularly playing Melee with friends during downtime at uni and went from someone who had only played the N64 version to someone who could consistently place in the top two in any given 4-player battle. I'm happy with that, and I have fun. Usually I main Captain Falcon or Luigi, but I do like playing Peach and Game & Watch and Dr. Mario as well as a few other characters once in a while.

But when it comes to picking characters randomly, I always feel a pang of guilt when I play Fox, Falco, Marth, Roy, or Zelda/Sheik. Especially with Marth, it's so easy to cheese with those characters that even resounding victories feel hollow and joyless.

I dunno, I just like to have fun. When it gets serious, that's when the butthurt begins to flow and that's when friendships break over the pettiest shit. Usually I just pull out Young Link and start doing the blender until people forget whatever they were mad about in order to destroy my ass.

Kirby main to the rescue.
Never use hammer. Jump to escape combos, you're floaty, so make some use of it. Use rock to punish people that are shit at the game and try to follow up everything, and use it to kill people that recover low. Make use of f smash's good range. Combo down air into down tilt, up tilt, or down tilt f-smash. Down tilt sometimes trips. Down air spikes. Shorthop nair is a thing. Use inhale against opponents with good n specials, such as shulk, anyone with a projectile, but never against little mac. Inhale should be a surprising move. Up special can spike people if you use it offstage and they get caught in it, similar to ike. Keep playing Best Character.

Reviving this thread with some new content from your friends of the Project M Development team!

With this trailer we see the inclusion with some stages that can cater to casuals and competitive players while still looking nice. We also see noticeable balance changes to Bowser and Wario who, for some reason, seem a bit more emphasized than other characters A nice change of pace from 3.5 which was a bit of a disappointment! I know Brawl is nowhere near Melee's combat flow and technicality, but it felt personal when you fought someone.

In 4, people will fling themselves at you until they connect the one hit they need to flowchart combo-lock you into infinity.

Can we take a moment to talk about how utterly shit smash tour is?
How is anyone supposed to have fun with that?
I dare you to play smash tour with friends and see how many would be up for a second round.

You don't get to play with characters you actually want to play with. Everyone is launchable way too easily. With the thousands of items being shat into the stages in seconds and people often even starting with some it's not unsual that someone is blasted into the stratosphere in the first second.
Of ten fights, maybe one you'll get to actually play the game instead of being hit by four sources at once at all times.

And don't even think about playing with the CPU. Those fuckers will last minutes against each other when all players are kill, making you watch two CPUs spaz around.

Seriously, why is even a heavy being shot towards the blast line by a f-tilt from Mario?
So the matches don't last longer than ten seconds?
God forbid you'd actually get to play Smash and have the fucking board game portion interrupted.

Fuck Smash Tour!

d7e809 No.10934

Yeah, Smash Tour is … weird. It takes a lot of inspiration from Itadaki Street, what with the checkpoints and the randomness and the horrible cheating computer, but replaces finance with violence.

It's EXTRA weird in that most players seem to find the random luck elements of Smash the most annoying part of the game, so adding a game mode that's entirely based on luck seems counterintuitive.

Doubly so that we got this instead of Smash Run, which would have worked so much better on the Wii U. On a big HD screen, you could actually appreciate the details in that huge dungeon. Maybe they could even have used the extra storage to add multiple stages to it - play a Megaman themed Smash Run in a high tech stage, for instance. It would nearly make up for the lack of an adventure mode.

But nope, instead we're wandering around a board game in glorious HD. Weird decision.

Its slower, floatier, combos are sparce once your opponent gets good enough to mash airjump and airdodge, and if you get far enough in the competitive scene it turns really campy and stale. Tbh if youre not aiming to win apex, it can be fun. But if you get cheesed or camped, the answer to that is to stop playing fun and switch characters/styles.

>wavedashing isn't necessary

Wavedashing might not be necessary on a certain level (like locals or just with friends), but It's strongly advised that you do anyway. Just simply learning wavedashing will improve your ground game exponentially. It is especially important on certain characters like Fox, Falco, Marth, and Luigi. It's relatively easy to learn but the hard part is applying it in actual games productively. I've been trying to implement wavedashing in my play style for a while now and i'm not still satisfied. I strongly recommend you learn it if you want to get good.

I wouldn't say shit, but it definitely isn't a great game mode to replace Adventure mode. The short times on the Smash minigames really ruin any pace and momentum gained, and I think it would be way more fun if given the chance to lengthen battle times and lower the rate of trophy-items.

ab0edb No.11331

>>11328
Definitely Falcon and Shulk if you look towards competitive play. Falcon is a high risk/reward character who relies on overwhelming opponents with his really fast and tough attacks. Shulk is incredibly spacy and defensive and can adapt to most situations.

Amiibo AI is relatively good (at least on my end) I recently got my hands on a Megaman Amiibo and named him "Robaron"

I would like amiibos more if they didn't cheat. They read your frame inputs (which isn't that bad) and deal about twice as much damage as a regular character at lvl 50. Smash Tour is 100% obsolete.

>It still kills me that there is no proper adventure mode. For lonerfags like me, adventure mode and the Subspace Emissary were godsends.

That's why I'm so sore about Smash Tour. They replaced a proper single player mode with a multiplayer mode that isn't any good.

It feels like barely anything you do actually matters in Smash Tour. It's so excessively random with almost all things that can happen to you being either negative or pointless.

Even if you actually end up having a character you like and know how to use for the final smash you can't enjoy it.

In Mario Kart the guys on the worse positions get better items to even the playingfield a little bit and you know what to expect.
I'm the best driver amongst my friends and often win because I'm smart about keeping bananas to block shells and such. I don't start with an unfair advantage, though.

If in Smash Tour however I end up with five chars against the other players having only one to three the game is pretty much decided.
Nobody likes rigged games.

What do you mean by "stock punch?" Little Mac's neutral B? Because that was never going to hit anyway; it's not a good move. I was more referring to his Jolt Haymaker, because an amiibo will shield it every time if you do the punch early, but if you wait it out until the punch happens at the end, they can get caught by it.

Dankey is really good in the air. His back, up, down and neutral are all really good. The front is slow and obvious but hits like a truck should you get it in.

The custom moves are absolutely worth it for him!
His wind punch is super annoying and can gimp and outright kill.
The cyclone spin sucks people in with a windbox and has no landing lag at all when you end it on the ground.
The armoured headbutt tanks almost every hit.
The hot slap is even better at edgeguarding than his normal slap. It only has a hitbox infront of him as a pillar of fire that has crazy knockback. If your opponent recovers low he's pretty much done for.

With customs he's easily upper mid tier, in my opinion.

A combo worth going for with regular moves is neutral air, jab 1 2, down tilt and if it trips you can headbut them into the ground and down air them while stuck in the ground. You might even get an up air in at some percents.

Grab instantly after changing direction to do a pivot grab. It has longer range than standing or running grab.
It's also less predictable because you can also just jump and back air instead, something you should definately learn because it's a great approach.
Or just punch them. DK has good range and his side tilt can also trip if you aim it at the feet.

Don't worry about your big punch too much. If you don't find time to charge it, don't bother. DK does well even without it.

Main is Pacman every day.
Pros:
Incredibly good at evasion
Recovery is great with power pellet and trampoline
Bonus fruits make for a versatile set of traps to make
Fire hydrant is good for throwing off predictions and a great down B in general.

Cons:
Grab is incredibly slow so you have to time it perfectly or risk getting killed
Certain moves such as the power pellet have tons of animation frames at the end of the attack
Bonus fruit are somewhat predictable and can be utilized against you with ease

Overall I love his playstyle despite the cons and I've managed to do decently against for glory players.

Practice practice practice.
Hop into training and beat level 9 CPUs until they're nothing but an amorphous blob of blue.
Learn how to combo moving targets and time your attacks.
Don't know if this would work for many others, but learn evasiveness. Practice against a really fast level 9 CPU and try your best to see how long you can last without taking damage while also attempting to dish out damage.
Don't forget as well, For Glory isn't like a tournament. Practice against humans as well, as bots will not ever be exactly like them.
Grabs are a necessity in a lot of cases.
Sometimes it's just better to shield than evade.
As for the characters you like, I can only give decent advice for Pacman. I'm awful with Shulk and I rarely play Captain Falcon.

2bad13 No.12112

There are two things you should learn before even bothering about combos and such:
Teching and DI

Press block before you hit the ground when you've been knocked away to get up instantly.
This will improve your survivability massively!
Likewise, if your opponent misses his tech, always punish.

DI is basically pointing the stick in the direction you want to be sent flying right before you get hit.
You want to aim for the upper corners of the stage to allow for more travel time before you hit the blastlines.
It sounds counter intuitive, and it is, but you'll be noticably harder to kill.

Most people on for glory aren't all that good. You'll be able to keep up in no time.
Who are you playing?

It's really just too quick in general due to 40% pretty much being kill percentage and too many items.

Besides setting the knockback to normal and being able to chose which of your characters you play I would've liked to be able to pick a character at the start as some kind of team leader with three lives.

You could pick your leader and risk loosing a life or chose a different char.
It would be less likely for someone not having any fighters at all and you'd have a better fighting chance in the final smash.

I've decided that I was tired of not playing a character I used to love just because I didn't think I was good enough, so I've been grinding out IC tech practice in Melee and Balanced Brawl the past few weeks.

I can't believe how much fun it is! A lot of the normal shit I did as a kid is still needed to play ICs well, but the advanced techniques add a whole new level to the game that I've just been missing out on all this time. Downside is that my friends are starting to really hate me lol.

He's the Akuma of Smash with a focus on his trick plays. Disable and Confusion are absolutely necessary to use in combat and cannot be shunned as much as people would like them to. Shadow Ball is incredibly important, and using Mewtwo's specials is mandatory. His normals, for the most part, are too risky and incredibly weak when compared to how open you are if you whiff an attack. His aerials are fantastic and are his second greatest assets. He's overall a fantastic character who I can see being a threat from competitive players in the future.

I saw some complaints about how floaty he is, but I think it makes a lot of sense for his character. As a clone of Mew, he should naturally feel floaty. That ability to stay in the air without use of more ups like Kirby or Pit, helps nail aerials a lot for me. It's feels really good and I tend to play him primarily in the air so far, and it's a nice change from my main of Mega Man, who also has great aerials but is heavier in the air I think.

Need to experiment with the specials more. Shadow Ball is good, but I wish it did damage while charging like Lucario's. And disable being a projectile hurts it a lot. My first match as against a Link who could block it just by standing there.

I mostly play Link, Ike, and Robin. Link's projectiles are all really fun to mess with, and it's nice mix them up with melee attacks. I've been trying to play as him without spamming projectiles too much, though.

Ike's attacks feel so satisfyingly powerful, but I'm not that great with him. I guess I need to work on timing so I don't get punished so much.

Is it just me, or is Mewtwo really boring to fight? Not even in a "overpowered" or "Underpowered" way, but just not fun to fight whether you win or lose. I don't know what it is about him. Maybe it's just that he doesn't really seem that cool. Characters like Sheik and Greninja are cool because they're super fast and technical. Ganondorf's cool because he's such a powerhouse, and characters like Ness or Robin have some real nice and flashy style to them, but Mewtwo just seems bland. He's not that fast and his animations don't make him look that powerful, whether or not they do that much damage. He doesn't seem like a bad character, just boring to fight.

I've never experienced boredom from fighting M2 or playing as M2, to be honest. My friend and I go M2 Ditto every once in awhile and it's incredibly fun. I love the whole Dark-Magic thing he has going on and wish more characters had a style similar to it. Maybe it's because of my fetish for necromancer and wizard archetypes; however I will say that I hate playing as or against Ganondorf. He's just feels like a slugish and unfun monster. Sorta like playing as a boss character who's actually terrible.

>At least it doesn't look like I would like Mewtwo. He seems terribad.

HAHA DISREGARD THAT I SUCK COCKS

Fucking massive ones at that. Mewtwo is really good. I was just pissed about the code thingy(still am a bit).

He's essentially somewhat of a glass cannon.

Downtilt combos into many things.

Uptilt sourspot combos directly into upsmash when the enemy is at higher percents.

The upsmash is VERY lethal and hits from the ground up.

With fast falling nair you can string together really nasty combinations and he plays a lot faster if you use his aerial attacks for better movement.

We have a potential B or A tier!

Does S tier even exist anymore after the Diddy and Sheik nerfs?

They had nerfs, but not enough nerf to make them terrible. Diddy is still A-tier thanks to his speed and Sheik is still Sheik. The only difference is that the two are slightly less devastating in terms of combos and damage. (Which is good.)

Luckily, since we have balance patches, we don't have to worry about Meta-Knight characters for too long. Diddy dominated but has seen a slight decline. He can still Hoo Hah but it's clearly not as bad.

Yeah, it was never a real problem that Diddy can Hoo Hah in general. My main King Dedede has a downthrow to Uair aswell and so have many other characters.

Diddy was just too damn effective with his because it worked even at kill percentages and those percentages were too low to begin with.

Having messed around a bit more with Mewtwo I'd say he's safely in middle tier where most characters are.

He can juggle really well and KOs very early but the same applies in reverse.

His teleport is the worst in the game and Disable is pretty worthless because a side smash hits in every situation a smash does. Disable may allow you to charge a smash but the smash itself can be delayed so overall a smash is often more useful.

Really situational.

On the flip side he has the by far best air dodge with it lasting 30 frames and it only having 3 of them being vulnerable at the end.

You can even use it to approach if you're not too obvious about it.

All his aerials are really good so his floatyness can be put to good use.

You better use that awesome airdodge, though. Getting hit means real trouble.

I'm fine with how he turned out.

If one likes his playstyle he's viable enough for competitive matches.

If one just plays to win and wants the most abusable character Mewtwo isn't it.

Balance is really good in Smash 4 right now.

"New Content Approaching" on the 14th of June. Sakurai will be hosting a video presentation at 07:40 PT | 16:40 CEST.

https://archive.is/e7OUu

Lucas is set to be released at 8am PT on that day so I'm guessing the video will be twenty minutes long and announcing something new.

There's also a new Wii U stage that day (and some costumes for Miis iirc).

There's all sorts of 'leaks' going around. I won't believe any of them until I see them in the direct on Sunday.

Always the best option but there's more footage.

https://nichegamer.com/2015/06/new-footage-of-japanese-super-smash-bros-update-shows-off-more-ryu-roy-and-more/

I would link directly to the twitch channel but it keeps giving me an error.

Ryu starts six minutes or so in. Roy is at thirty-two and a half minutes in. There's loads of it but Lucas is in there as well.

Ryu actually looks pretty fun. It looked like he sort of played like a street fighter character.

Apparently he's based of his SFII version and the button sequences are the same.

They were dedicated to getting that accurate (if that's right).

Also they're bringing back the Peach's Castle and Hyrule Castle stages.

Oh nice, I assume the hyrule stage will be wiiu only.

Are they planning to shrink it? I thought that sakurai wanted to keep the stages on the 3ds small.

They don't say. He does say they won't be adding many more after these ones.

Rewatching the announcement they don't specify what it'll be on (starts 6m40s) but I figure if it was for one they would have said.
