I like the idea of playing as a wizard and the SPELL COMBINATIONS. Is this worth playing? And no, I will not be playing the game with another person.

I was actually really interested and excited for this game back when it was in development but I ended up being completely betrayed by its publisher/developer. They stated very clearly that there would be a DRM-free version of the game at some point, and it never actually happened.

So yeah fuck Magicka and fuck those lying shitheads Paradox Interactive. This really hurt me.

You could still pirate it.

It's a fun, silly game. The tone is light, the world is colorful, the spell combinations CAN be fun, but I'd say if you don't intend to play with another person it's gonna get real old real fast. I played it solo at first and it was okay, but it wasn't something I stuck with. Then I found a bro to play with and holy hell does it get a thousand times more fun.

The big change comes in synchronization. Coordinating with your friend, going "yeah I got a rock ready, freeze him" or something, and then pulling it off. That's satisfying, it's a lot less satisfying when you have to freeze him yourself and then rock him yourself, or whatever combo you decide on.

Magicka is one of my favorite games of all time due to it's unique magic system, and emphasis on just being a wizard. No game has ever let you combine elements like magicka does. To me, it's a gem of a game that a lot of my friends don't seem to appreciate, because the find the idea or friendly fire to be obnoxious, and they simply don't find it fun, but killing your friend accidentally is almost entirely all of the fun.

I would suggest, if you like PVP, checking out Magicka: Wizard Wars. It's a hell of a lot of fun, you got a full "skill-tree" to level up through, unlocking items and robes that give you more power in a certain element in return for less in another. For example, if you pick the Life Magic path you get some druid robes that buff your healing abilities, but shit on the strength of your shields.

I'm playing that game right now and I gotta say, not enjoying it much. The spell combination idea is neat, but everything else about it is some degree of bad. In particular, I went in expecting more of a typical adventure-RPG type of structure, not an absolutely linear one level after the next structure. And I do mean absolutely linear, on the rare occasion the path forks, you can't go back through the door to try the other path. Also I keep wishing I could hold even one alternate wand and weapon in reserve. I mean, as cool as Mjolnir is, it suuuuucks in interiors, for example. Also, as you go you find more and more parts that are either really hard or stupid easy if you do the just right thing. Like, I tried to fight Fafnir legit, and died died died with barely a dent in his health. Than I just stood right in front and mashed the melee attack button and beat him without getting hit once. If there's a strategy between hopeless failure and mindlessly easy, I couldn't find it.

Then you won't be really playing Magicka.
