I didn't mind it much since I had a link cable and didn't have to deal with the passwords, which could get ridiculously long. Still, having the option to do either was rather neat, especially if you didn't know of anyone else with a GBA.

As I recall, the amount of GBA cartridge data space at the time of the first game's release meant that the second half of the game would need it's own separate release (which might have been for the best; the larger cartridge size for TLA likely meant the game could have a bigger world, and being a separate game likely worked better for the party switching between games). At least, that's what I've heard anyhow.

Not disagreeing with that in how it works, but that's why after I did the data transfer for the first time, I saved the game as early as I could and copied the save data to the other two slots (with slot 3 as a back up). Now I never need to worry about doing the data transfer or sitting through that long dialogue between Kraden and Alex meant to catch up new players again.
