On a similar note to that.

>Sequel to prior game sees the entire cast of playable characters return (plus a few new ones).

>While character progress is not carried over (levels, skills, equipment), the game gives an actually feasible sounding (within the context of the world the game is in) explanation for why they've been reset to much lower levels as opposed to simply ignoring that fact.

>>17152

Definitely something I really enjoyed about Avalon Code. With compiling an encyclopedia of the world being a big part of the game, every item, equip, monster, character, screen of the map, and some other things get a readable lore entry in the Book of Prophecy.

>sequel allows you to import savegames from previous games in the series

>they give you advantages if your savegame cleared certain objectives or unlocked certain things

>the advantages are just enough to reward you but not enough to break the game in half

The Ace Combat series between 04-5-Zero did everything right.

I've never seen that. Which game?

>sequel let's you import the save file from the previous game with a difficult password/encryption code

>doing so allows you to unlock devastating new weapons and armor you wouldn't have gotten otherwise or needed friends to do

c52158 No.17381

My favorite part about the implementation of this was how it worked in a way that emulators handled as well.

That was a terrible mechanic anon. It makes it a pain in the ass to replay The Lost Age. They really should have condensed the two into one game.

>need X product to fully complete Y product

You know what I just hate this crap in general. It reeks of anti-consumerism. It's the whole reason I stopped playing Pokemon and never bothered with those Battle Network games.

>need X to complete Y

>not have X to get bonus Y

Better than buying the weapons as DLC or getting them as a preorder exclusive.

>>17386

It's not too late for that. They don't even have to 3Dify it or remix the music, they could just rerelease both games as one and include the secrets, plus something more and forget about Dark Dawn

You could say the same about Sonic 3 and Knuckles, but I think it comes down to making the best of time/money constraints. They probably didn't have the budget for a game the size of both Golden Suns, so they split them up and saw how well the first one did. This is pretty sensible, considering it was a new IP at the time, and one of the best games on the GBA.

be19df No.17394

>>17388

You see it as a bonus; I see it as a huge middle finger to completionists.

679f55 No.17397

>>17394

I just see it as an extra incentive to transfer it over, considering you're not playing as the same party from the first game when you start.

6c1310 No.17404

>>17371

I didn't mind it much since I had a link cable and didn't have to deal with the passwords, which could get ridiculously long. Still, having the option to do either was rather neat, especially if you didn't know of anyone else with a GBA.

>>17386

As I recall, the amount of GBA cartridge data space at the time of the first game's release meant that the second half of the game would need it's own separate release (which might have been for the best; the larger cartridge size for TLA likely meant the game could have a bigger world, and being a separate game likely worked better for the party switching between games). At least, that's what I've heard anyhow.

>It makes it a pain in the ass to replay The Lost Age.

Not disagreeing with that in how it works, but that's why after I did the data transfer for the first time, I saved the game as early as I could and copied the save data to the other two slots (with slot 3 as a back up). Now I never need to worry about doing the data transfer or sitting through that long dialogue between Kraden and Alex meant to catch up new players again.

I wouldn't call that a "little thing"

c52158 No.17408

>>17386

Considering how the way it works makes you able to play the lost age in any save on an emulator or anything and able to get the content by generating a code or finding one online, you're not locked out of anything or forced to have the first game.

be19df No.17415

>>17408

I suppose it's indeed better than Battle Network and the Oracles and Pokemon games in that regard at least. Still it's a huge pain in the ass to enter the full gold password.

74cb55 No.17512

Not little I suppose, but I like it when a boss changes depending on the difficulty setting and/or the player character's level. Either unique/harder attacks or another phase, basically anything beyond stat changes.

Also I've got a thing for JRPG bosses that have an unnecessarily ridiculous large about of health. Not particularly difficult, just takes time.

And satisfying reloading animations.

>>17152

I always liked those (assuming they're interesting). Makes me wonder if I should play Murdered Soul Suspect, since all that seems to be is a collectable game with info dumps at every turn.

>game has a model viewer

>or if 2d, sprite viewer

I find it weird that if anything, this seems to be happening less, even though the effort that goes into every single character model has only gone up. At this point, characters have enough detail that you'd never appreciate it in actual gameplay, especially if it's a fast-paced action game and/or mostly firing from a distance, so why not put in some kind of unlockable model viewer?

The ingame encyclopedias are the best when they follow suit with the tone of the rest of the game's writing. I'm really disappointed that the enemy encyclopedia in the second Ratchet and Clank game didn't return in any of the subsequent games.

>Not bothering with BN because of minor version differences.

The first 2 games don't even have different versions, so if that gets your panties in a twist you can still at least play those, especially since 2 is considered the peak of the series. 3 started the version nonsense, but since Blue is objectively the best (additional bossfight) just play that one, the only other differences are a single style change and a couple of the rarest chips, nothing that will result in a major change between games. 4 is garbage, but there's a system to import all bosses from the alternate version, so again all you miss are some souls and giga chips. BN 5 has a DS version that has both of the gba versions where you decide which one you want to play when starting a new save, in addition you can call in team members from the other version in missions. 6 has a great mod for Falzar version that lets you fight the other exclusive bosses, so again all you really miss out on are a few crosses, the super mode (both versions are pretty similar here, it's not a huge change), and some Gigachips.

Fuck yeah, Wild Arms 2.

And here's a related thing I love, though I only know of one series that did it:
