Welcome to the new age of witch hunting, anon.
Years ago, if someone held an opinion or acted contrary to community/social norms, they got run out of town. Like if a guy was found out to be gay, people might ostracize or even give him a beating. Poor bastard might have had to move town or stop sucking dicks.
Now you're excluded from all forms of interaction if you hold the "wrong" opinion, because communication is instantaneous and ubiquitous - go against the majority and everyone will know - forever - that you're a bad apple and associating with you is doubleplus ungood.
There is no delineation of "private opinion" and "public function" on this battlefield: if you're not plastering your social media profile in rainbow paraphernalia, you're a gay-bashing hatemonger.
The shoe is on the other, more "progressive" foot, but it's still stamping on a human face.
